Intermittent vCenter/ESXi host disconnect issue

$
0
0

Configuration: vCenter Virtual Appliance running 5.1.0.  2 x identical ESXi hosts running 5.0U1.  VCVA is running on ESXi host 'a'.

Symptom: vCenter complains of a disconnect in communication with the host, but automatically reconnects after a moment.  ESXi hosts do not experience any issues - no reboots, no interruption to running VMs on them or connections to applications on the VMs.  Have not been able to find any seemingly relevant messages in the logs on either ESXi hosts.

Times of events:

Oct 30, 3:07PM - disconnect from host 'b', automatically reconnected after a moment

Nov 6, 10:35PM - disconnect from host 'a', automatically reconnected after a moment

Nov 20, 8:00AM - disconnect from host 'a', automatically reconnected after a moment

The key errors that I've located are in the vCenter vpxd.log files.  Same pattern of messages for each occurrence (didn't see these messagea at any other time).

Does anyone have any ideas as to what service is connecting to what, or where I might look for further information regarding this issue?  I've not come up with any useful KB articles or discussion posts regarding these messages.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

vCenter 5.5 Installation failing.

Hello Guys,

It's a brand new server with Windows 2008 R2 installed from scratch with all updates.  vCenter Single Sign-On, Web Client, and Inventory Service gets installed with no issues but during the installation of vCenter Server, it gives and error with the following message:

The wizard was interrupted before vmware vcenter could be completely installed. Refer to the log files vim-vci-msi.log.  I have also attached the log file it refers to.  I have already tried KB article 2013922 http://goo.gl/tTjBMQ but no change. I don't see anything obvious that could cause the installation to fail.  Thanks for your help.

Enable EVC Mode from VMware vCenter Server Appliance

Hello,

I am fairly new to vSphere.  I have two hosts running ESXi 5.1  One of those hosts is running the "VMware vCenter Server Appliance" with vSphere version 5.5.  I currently have a single cluster that contains all the VMs both the hosts and the SAN.

I am trying to enable EVC mode, however when I attempt that it tells me that the host cannot be admitted because there are powered on VMs.  I can power down all of the VMs except the vCenter Appliance and I still get the problem on the host that has the appliance on it.  If I power down the appliance, I will not be able to use vSphere to enable EVC.

How can I enable EVC when vSphere is not running?

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi All,

I have vcenter 5.5 setup but when I try to manage it via the weclient it just constantly hangs (the client) I couldn't even enter the foundation license.  Is there a common task that has to be carried out before getting the best from the web client? anyone now what I could look into?

Thanks

Dear VMware Community!

I don't have any web interface after install. Could you help me to solve this issue?

I installed successfully VMware-ESXi-5.5.0, and then downloaded and deployed VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.5101-1398493.

This is nmap scan results of vCenter Server Appliance:
Starting Nmap 6.40 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2013-11-18 10:47 Środkowoeuropejski czas stand.

I hope that some of you faced with this problem, because I can't find a solution!:-)

In attached file you can find screenshot form console.

Cheers!

By the way, from default virtual machine hardware version is 7, I upgraded it to 10 but without any change.

Unable to start the vCenter / Management Web Services

Hi All,

I recently moved our vCenter installation to another server "vCenterServer" from the original server "Win12-ban", I have left the database on "Win12-ban" and created a DSN on "vCenterServer" which tests successfully when connecting into the database from the "vCenterServer" database. When I originally set this all up it worked a dream, I was originally using my own domain account to start the service (rather than the local system account), but now none of these accounts will start the service. I really want to be using the local account as I want to be able to see performance stats within vcenter.

The error message I get when trying to start the service is:

screenshot1.JPG

Followed by this in the event viewer:

Log Name: Application

The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Error getting configuration info from the database

I have tested the DSN from the machine with vCenter installed and it tests successfully, which suggests there is a connection from the vCenter Server to the database, has anyone encountered similar issues?

Adding/Viewing ESX hosts local datastore in vCenter

Hey all,

I'm glad to join these forms and hope I don't get shot down for not having a VM cert (I'm trying hard to find out where and how to get it)

I have recently graduated with a Network Managing diploma, and am on the fast track into my new career. Now I'll try to fill in as much so things are as clear as possible

ESXi 1 - Dell G6, running 5.1.0, 1065491

Storage Adapter - Smart Array P410i

vmhba0

Details - HP Serial Attached SCSI Disk, ID (naa.############...), Runtime Name: vmhba1:c0:T0:L0, Mounted Disk Non-SSD, Block Adapter, 1TB)

ESXi 2 - Dell G7 running 5.1.0, 1065491

Storage Adapter - Smart Array P410i

Details- HP Serial Attached SCSI Disk, ID (naa.############...), Runtime Name: vmhba1:c0:T0:L1, Mounted Disk Non-SSD, Block Adapter, 1TB)

vCenter - Win Server 2008 r2 (working on getting the powershell features to work with CodePLex packages)

Has Both ESXi hosts in a single Datacenter, with a single Cluster... in this cluster is one SAN that both hosts can access no problem

When I click on Cluster 1 -> Summary -> Storage (Shows ESXi 1 local storage and SAN storage) NO ESXi 2 local storage.

When I click on ESXi 1 host in vCenter and then click on either Summary, or Configuration(Storage)... it will show the SAN and the hosts local storage

When I click on ESXi 2 host in vCenter and then click on either Summary, or Configuration(Storage)... it will show the SAN and NOT the hosts local storage

Question how can I view and manage ESX 2 local storage via vCenter?

Right now I have to manually log into ESX 2 via vSphere thickclient and see its local datastore.

I was talkin to a couple people on #vmware in IRC, but can't seem to figure out why... is something mmiss configured? I figured to do this would have been a no brainer... I tryed "scan for new datastores" on the ESX 2 within vCenter, no dice.

HELP

template actions grayed out

Hi,

Today I've found out that for one of my templates some of the actions are grayed out. I can successfully deploy vm from this template, however I can't convert it to vm, nor rename it, nor remove it from inventory, nor delete it from disk. There are no on-going actions for this template currently. How can I find out why those actions are grayed out (my other templates are just fine, hasn't got those actions grayed out)?

vSphere I update from version 5.0 and all was well.

Vcenter (VCSA) update failed

Hello,

i'm running the VCSA since a couple of months and tried to update it to 5.0 Update 1a (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2031331). After 14 hours the Update was running, middle in database-upgrade, nothing happened anymore, that's why i've rebooted the Vcenter appliance. It never came up again

Well, then i've made a restore through Veeam and finally the Vcenter appliance is running again, with the old 5.0.03324 Build 472350.

Now i would to try to Update the Appliance to 5.0.0.5239 Build 759855 again, but the Update failed before it really starts

What can i do?

vCenter Server Appliance update and VMware Tools

$

I've just updated VCSA to 5.1.0.10000 Build 1065184. I had to uninstall VMware Tools first 'cause update failed with

"VMware Tools cannot install because it appears that another installation of

VMware Tools is already present. Please remove the previous installation and

then attempt to install this copy of VMware Tools again."

error in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/updatecli.log (I had similar problem with previous update).

After update I can see in this log:

"22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Running /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_reconfigure_tools

VMware tools is not installed on this VM.

22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Update status: Done VMware tools reconfiguration"

Should I install VMware Tools via vSphere Web Client again? I supposed VMware Tools to be installed by VCSA update. I can see packages anyway:

vm-vcenter:~ # rpm -qa|grep -i vmware-tools

vmware-tools-vmmemctl-kmp-default-1.2.1.2_3.0.13_0.27-3

But I can't start daemon:

vim.fault.HttpFault when sorting VMs in vSphere Client after 5.1 upgrade

$

Hello. I have recently completed a upgrade of vCenter from 5.0 > 5.1. I ran into some common teething problems with SSO but things look ok at the moment. I do have one problem that I'd really like to fix - when attempting to sort VMs in the vSphere client, I see the following error:

Unable to connect to web service to execute query. Verify that the 'VMware VirtualCenter Management Webservices' service is running on https://vcenter_server_fqdn:10443 vim.fault.HttpFault

This is repeatable across multiple systems running the VI client. The Viclient log shows:

vCenter appliance 5 and SMTP Configuration

hi guys

I setup the

SMTP Server IP

and

Sender Account in my new and shiny vCenter Appliance 5 server

SMTP Server: 192.168.1.x

Sender account: vcenter@mycompany.net

now testing for the email alerts I get that my email server gets or receives email from the root account from my vCenter app lie this

root@servername.mycompany.net

so this is not valid and my email server won't relay this email

any idea if there is a issue for vCenter appliance since is linux having issues sending emails?

thanks a lot

Unable to open console in vSphere Web Client after 5.5 upgrade.

We are unable to open the console of any VM through vSphere Web Client following the upgrade to 5.5 This goes for all user groups including administrators.

When you right click on the VM to get the menu the Console selection turns from colored to gray. Has anyone else see anything similar? Is there a fix available?

Thanks in advance!

VMware vSphere Web Client - migrate option greyed out

$

When selecting a VM to migrate the option to migrate is greyed out.  In fact, Power On, Migrate, Revert to Current Snapshot are greyed out.  I would like to migrate this VM to another host and datastore.

ESXi version 5.1.0 build 1021289

VMware vCenter Server, 5.1.0 build 947673

I've migrated 154 VMs and out of the 154 VMs migrated approximately a dozen VMs would not allow for live migrations(migrate... option greyed out).  I could not identify any commonality between the dozen VMs that did not allow for live migrations.

I really need to migrate this VM in a live state if at all possible.

When vCenter checks to see if a VM is a valid candidate to migrate, what does it check for because the migrate option is NOT grey for about a second before it becomes greyed out?

VMware VirtualCenter Server Service not starting

$

I've been fighting with this issue for a while now and haven't been able to find a solution - even with checking the posts on this forum.

I am running VMware vCenter Server 5.1.0.32743 on a Windows 2008R2 physical server (not on a domain). Whenever I make a hardware change (ie, adding a SCSI card) the VirtualCenter Server service (and also the VirtualCenter Management Webservices service) refuses to start.

When I remove the SCSI card the issue still persists and the only way for me to resolve so far is to restore the server from backup - obviously not ideal and I need to connect tape drives to this server.

servicenotstarting1.png

I get the standard event 1000 in event viewer also.

I have tried changing the service startup types so that SSO service comes up first (as suggested in one of the KB articles) but this has no effect.

The back end of the vpxd-xx.log file shows this:

If I try to go to that commandserver url in the log above in a browser, it also get a 404:

404.png

The only thing similar I can find online is here:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2036170

Very similar exception error but nothing similar in my discover-is.log file.

From that kb link above I have run the following command:

C:\Program  Files\VMware\Infrastructure\SSOServer\utils>ssocli.cmd configure-riat  -a discover-is -u admin -p <masterPassword>

And I get the following output which confirms the discover-is log:

cli.png

Netstat shows that port 7444 is opened by Java and nothing else. The other potential problem port (443) is not in use by anything else that it shouldnt be.

I suspect this may be the cause of the problem but I have no idea where to go next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreiciated.

Many thanks,

Matt

Trying to upgrade VCenter to 5.5 - when upgrading the SSO portion, get an error saying that the VMware KDC service failed to start - verify that you have sufficient privs, etc. it is installing as local system. stops immediately upon starting. no helpful info in system logs. try it as a local administrator on the VCenter server - still fails immediately. anyone have any recommendations or ideas where i can look to find out the source of the issue and get it resolved?

thanks!

What permissions are needed to deploy from OVA/OVF

Our environment is vCenter 4.1 U1 and ESXi 4.1 U1. We have a multi-tenant Lab environment where users are isolated with separate Resource Pools and separate VM, Storage, and Network folders. The users are administrators to all of these.

They want to be able to deploy OVA/OVF templates but, they get this error (attached image) at this point. I'd like to know the minimum permissions required to allow this without exposing other tenants resources.
