How do I configure NIS as a vSphere 5.1 SSO identity source?

VMware claims (e.g., http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/Whats-New-VMware-vCenter-Server-51-Technical-Whitepaper.pdf) that NIS is supported on 5.1 as an SSO identity source.  However, I can't figure out how to add NIS as an identity source.

I've logged into the web client and go to Administration>Sign-On and Discovery>Configuration,  and I see the current identity sources (System-Domain and localos). When I click on the "+" to add a new identity source, the resulting dialog only allows "Open LDAP", "Active Directory", and "Local OS" as identity source types---I expect it to offer "NIS" as well.  This is true whether I connect to a vCenter Server Appliance (on Linux) or a full vCenter Server install on Windows.  I even configured ypbind on the appliance, but that had no effect.
