Installing vcenter appliance is not an easy thing

Maybe it was firefox's block of flash, maybe there's a problem with the client integration plugin, but firefox keeps requesting to restart it due to the plugin being installed. Got a clean copy and then it worked, although I do get the occasional time out when opening the installation page.

I was a bit surprised I needed a dhcp server running despite providing a fixed ipaddress when installing the platform controller, but I got that installed as well. The problem I'm currently having is installing the vcenter bit, by itself. Filling in all the requested info and letting the installation run its course, I get the following results.

The installation page displays the message

Unable to login to vSphere Web Client - [500] SSO error: Cannot connect to the VMware Component Manager

Hi,

I have been testing out the latest vSphere, and have ran in to an issue with the vCenter Server Appliance.

I was able to access it via its web address as well as by the vSphere Client but after I rebooted the host that it was running on I can no longer access it.

This is for both the web address and client.

When I go to the address i get the usual certificate warning but after that I get:

A server error occurred.

[500] SSO error: Cannot connect to the VMware Component Manager

The vCenter Server Appliance is a virtual instance on the host.

I am able to connect directly to the host and the VM is running, as I can open the console session to it.

All this occurred after I rebooted the host to complete the install of the Mega RAID CLI and LSI Provider .VIB's

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Marcus

Purging old tasks/events in VirtualCenter

$

I thought I would share this procedure I documented to purge old tasks and events in VirtualCenter. I initially opened a support case on this with Vmware because I wanted to get rid of the older tasks and events in VirtualCenter and there was nothing built into VC that would automatically do this. Vmware supports response was basically we don't support the maintenance, backup or data integrity of the VC database. They said you have to delete the data from the tables manually. So I did some research and put together this procedure in case anyone is interested. The tasks and event tables can get pretty large, mine had about 200,000 rows for just 4 ESX servers.

How can I purge old Event and Task data from VirtualCenter?

VirtualCenter does not support doing this directly, the only way you can do this by deleting directly from the database tables. It is strongly recommend to have a functional backup of the VC database before clearing these tables in case of an unforeseen problem. Also the the VC service must be stopped in order to avoid data corruption. This is not a supported procedure by Vmware but should be in my opinion, these tables can get pretty large in big environments as every single task and event is preserved in the database.

The tables where the data is stored are VPX_TASK (Tasks) and VPX_EVENT, VPX_EVENT_ARG (Events). The VPX_EVENT_ARG will usually have more rows then the VPX_EVENT table. This is because the VPX_EVENT table only has one row per event but the VPX_EVENT_ARG table can have multiple rows per event (The link between the 2 tables is the EVENT_ID column).

o     Shutdown the VirtualCenter service

o     Connect to the database server that is hosting the VC database with a SQL browser/client. You can use a free tool like WinSQL Lite (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsql.html) for this.

o     To delete all data in the tables type: ‘delete from VPX_TASK’ then ‘delete from VPX_EVENT’ and then ‘delete from VPX_EVENT_ARG’ and finally ‘Commit’

o     Optionally you can do ‘truncate table VPX_TASK’ then ‘truncate table VPX_EVENT’ and then ‘truncate table VPX_EVENT_ARG’ (Truncate is faster and does not use as much undo space as delete)

o     To selectively delete data older then 30 days: ‘delete from VPX_TASK where complete_time < sysdate - 30)

o     To selectively delete data older then 30 days from VPX_EVENT and VPX_EVENT_ARG is trickier because VPX_EVENT_ARG does not have a date field and it tied to the events in VPX_EVENT by the Event_id field.

o     First delete from the child table (VPX_EVENT_ARG): ‘delete from vpx_event_arg where event_id in (select a.event_id from vpx_event_arg a, vpx_event b where a.event_id = b.event_id and create_time < sysdate - 30)

o     Next commit the delete by typing ‘Commit’

o     Then delete from the parent table (VPX_EVENT): ‘delete from vpx_event where create_time < sysdate – 30’

o     Finally commit again by typing ‘Commit’

o     Start the VirtualCenter service

Web Client throws Error #2032 when accessed through any sort of reverse proxy / SSL VPN

I've been trying to publish the Web Client through our SSL VPN which has a nice workspace to publish web links.

Unfortunately, something in the vSphere web client breaks very badly if you do not connect directly to the application - it loads the background image but instead of displaying the login dialog it simply bombs out with an "Error #2032" message.

Anyone found a fix for this?

We recently updated our vSphere Server 5.5 to 6.0 and the NetApp VSC Plugin from 5.0 to 6.0.

Now the Plugin won't show up in the WebClient as it did before the upgrade.

Has anyone the same issue? Is there a solution for it?

The backup jobs defined before the upgrade are running.

Thanks

Vcenter 6 cannot access licensing after certificate replacement

Hi all,

Ive just replaced my vcenter 6 machine and solution user certificates using the certificate manager tool. All seemed well, until when i disconnected my host from the cluster and when i try to reconnnect it, prompts me some error about my ssl certificate and licensing, saying that my certificate used is a less secure version lower than 3.

I tried to access the home>licensing option but the samr error popped out. Then i went to check the certificates that i used and found that they were indeed v1 certificates. However, the generation of the certificate requests were done automatically by the tool. I did not have a choice to select the version used. Is this an expected behaviour? Or is there someway i can edit the certificate manager to generate v3 certificate requests? Or is this a totally different problem altogether.

vCenter Server 5 Role Permissions Required to Apply Host Recommendations?

$

I have a subset of admins to take care of specific VMs.  The role created to give them access to the VM allows them to power off and power on the VMs.  However, if we are doing some maintenance in the cluster and set the DRS to Manual and one of those admins tries to power on a VM, they do not get the expected "Host Recommendations for VMNAME" popup window where they can select the host to power the VM on.  In fact, they do not get anything - not even an error.

What permission(s) do I need to add to the role to allow them to select a host to power on the VM?  I tried 'Resource -> Apply recommendation,' but that didn't help.

On a related note, has anyone put together a detailed list of what actions require what permissions?  VMware has fallen down hard, when it comes to documenting this.  It was bad enough when they weren't documented in vCenter Server 2.5.  It got worse with vCenter Server 4.0.  And it's no better with vCenter Server 5.

I mean, someone in VMware had to define these permissions in the first place.  Can't they simply just document what they are limiting?  Hello?  VMware?  Really??

Cannot see Hardware Status of Host ESXi 5.5 anymore in Web client 5.5.

Hello,

I can no longer see the Hardware Status of the Host ESXi 5.5 using the web client. I can however see it under Health status using a direct connection to the host using vSphere client.

If I connect to the Vcenter server appliance using vSphere client I get No new Host data available.  This was working a while ago.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks ,

VMware vCenter service stops with SQL DB size errors

$

Hi,

We run VMware vCenter 4.1 with 3 ESX hosts, and 50 VMs. vCenter is running on Windows 2008 R2, with SQL 2005 Express SP2.

Yesterday our virtual backup failed, saying it couldn't connect to the vCenter agent. When I looged into the issue, it appeared that the vCenter Server service had stopped. Up on further investigation it appears that the SQL Express database had reached 4GB in size, which is the limited, and this caused the vCenter service to fall over.

I've checked some forum posts, and have performed the following:

  • Set a database retention policy for tasks & events, this was originally un-checked, but I have checked it, and set it to 90 days initially, and now 30 days.
  • Found a script on the VMware forum called VCDB_table_cleanup_MSSQL_V4.X.sql which can cleanup the database. I set it to delete data older (changing SET @DELETE_DATA = 1) than 90 days, and it removed 130,000+ rows.
  • Performed a database shrink & file shrink on the data file - this only got me back 9mb?
  • Performed a database shrink & file shrink on the log file - this got back a little more, about 100mb.
  • Changed the log file size from 460mb to 1024mb, in the database properties > files settings.

However, even after all of the above, when I restart the server, or stop & start the vCenter service, the following errors are logged in the application log:

Error when loading VMWare vSphere Client

Hey guys, I'm a newbie to the VMWare world and have just experienced my first problem.

My system was installed by a 3rd party vendor that, due to uncontrolable circumstatnces, is not accessible at this time.  So, I'm attempting to see if anyone might have a resolution for me.

I'm using ESX 4.  When I open the vSphere Client application and enter my login credentials, I receive the following slew of errors:

The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

VMware Remote Console unrecoverable error: (player)

SSLLoadSharedLibrary: Failed to load library libeay32.dll:126

The last error writes a dump file.

This application has always worked flawlessly.  The problem started while I was on a business trip last week.  I'm suspecting that some type of update (Microsoft, Java, etc.) is probably what is causing this issue.

I tried re-registering the dll files but it didn't make a difference.  I would love to re-install the application as suggested, but I'm currently unable to locate that download on VMware's site.

I'm just curious if anyone has any suggestions or possibly the location of the downloads?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hi,

I have updated the vCenter 5.5 to the latest version that is available yesterday. It is linux appliance.

I was having problem to get in to web client after the update. I performed the "Regenerate SSL certificates" option thats located under Admin tab. Then the issue is resolved and I am able to get in to web client.

Now, I am seeing the different issue.

Unable to retreive health data from http://localhost/sps/health.xml

Unable to retreive health data from http://localhost/sms/health.xml

These 2 services are running but not able to load it. Also, I am seeing the following exceptions in the log.

Hey Everyone,

In the windows client we can click on a cluster, goto VM tab and then export CSV / excel format.

Is there a way to accomplish this same task in the Web Client?

Thank you for your help, points awarded.

Good day, and I hope yours is better than mine...

Just downloaded and set up VCSA 6.0 U2.  Finally got it to join my domain*.  Added admin group from domain and gave them permissions.  Every time I tried to use NT authentication (the checkbox) it would error out.

I found and followed articles 2020970 and 21112283.  Now I am unable to log into the web client nor the vSphere client.

web client yeilds this

Check the vSphere Web Client server logs for details.

          vsphere client says

Windows session credentials cannot be used to log into this server   (which is what started the 2 KBs above)

or

Cannot complete login due to incorrect user name or password  (I tried SSO Admin, domain user, appliance root user)

I have tried the certificate replacement steps (option 8, then 8, then 3, then 4, then 8 again).  Each ends with errors similar to this:

Thanks for the help from Stumped in Miami.

*  And for those of you getting Error 11 on trying to join the domain go into the SCVA web portal, drill down to the actual network settings and switch the DNS to manual.  Sorry I can't be specific on the actual path to this setting.  Although I gave it specific DNS at set up and a static IP I finally found that it had reverted to getting DNS from DHCP...  Hope this helps.

vCenter 5.5 certificate replacement issue

I'm having problems getting the self signed certificates for vCenter v5.5 replaced with Enterprise CA certificates.  I am using the certificate replacement tool from VMware.  The SSO certificate is successfully replaced so I move on to having the Inventory service trust the SSO certificate.  They succeeds as well but I think all its doing is bouncing the Inventory service.  I then go to install the Inventory service certificate and get:

[Sat 03/15/2014 - 15:51:06.27]: The services that are restarted as a part of this operation are: vCenter Inventory Service.

Enter the location to the new Inventory Service SSL chain (default value is: c:\certs\Inventory\chain.pem):

Enter the Single Sign-On Administrator user (default value is: administrator@vsphere.local):

Enter the Single Sign-On Administrator password (will not be echoed):

[Sat 03/15/2014 - 15:51:20.41]: Cannot determine if Inventory Service is registered with Single Sign-On - errorlevel is 1

If I look at the logs, I see the following:

[Sat 03/15/2014 - 15:51:20.39]: Exiting Inventory Service update SSL certificate due to errors

Obviously there is something about the CA chain that it doesn't like.  If I look at my cert store on the vCenter server, I have my Root CA in the Trusted Root store.  In the Intermediate Store I have both the Root and Intermediate.  If I browse to the lookup service (https://FP-CSVC01.domain.loc:7444/lookupservice/sdk) from a web browser, the certificate shows as valid and throws no errors so there should be nothing wrong with the certificate.

The format of the chain.pem in the Inventory directory is correct as well.  It is the Inventory cert, followed by the Intermediate cert, followed by the Root cert.  No extra spaces anywhere.

I have also tried to manually replace the certificates and it essentially fails at the same spot.  SSO replacement goes fine then I go to unregister the Inventory service and the SSL handshake fails.

Funny thing is that if I am using vCenter 5.1, I get past this all without issue.

Thoughts??

Dear VMware Community!

I don't have any web interface after install. Could you help me to solve this issue?

I installed successfully VMware-ESXi-5.5.0, and then downloaded and deployed VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.5101-1398493.

This is nmap scan results of vCenter Server Appliance:

By the way, from default virtual machine hardware version is 7, I upgraded it to 10 but without any change.

VCenter start fails after demoting Domain Controller

Hi.

Instead of hijacking other one's thread having the same problem I decided to start a new thread, so sorry for double posting.

After promoting a new DC and demoting the old one we have the problem that VCenter 5.1a no longer starts.

Taking a look at the imsTrace.log file of SSOServer we see the following line:

Caused by: javax.resource.spi.ResourceAdapterInternalException: Unable to create managed connection olddc.ourdomain.com:3268

As we can see SSO still tries to contact the old dc now beeing a simple member server instead of the new one - the question is why?

We checked health of AD by running DCDIAG and BPA both not seeing any problems. Additionally we checked DNS by hand to ensure that no SRV or any other records are present which reference the old DC. Also all other AD dependent services like Exchange, SharePoint, DFS run without issue and do not indicate any problems.

We also found the krb5.conf file of SSO which still references the old DC by the following entry:

[realms]
OURDOMAIN.COM = {
    kdc = olddc.ourdomain.com
    default_domain = OURDOMAIN.COM
}

However changing that entry does not solve the problem because after a short period this entry is replaced automagically by ??? - that's the question.

Mybe someon else has some ideas what to check next.

Cheers.

vCenter Server Appliance checking for update hangs

Hey all,

I just wanted to update a vCSA appliance. Unfortunately it hangs in the status "Checking for aivailable updates..." as has no internet access.

I changed the settings to CD-ROM  updates, mounted the update-repo iso and restarted the appliance, but no luck, it's still in the checking for updates mode.

Anyone has an idea how to stop this process? As the check and install update buttons are disabled during the update search.

Thanks

Tim
