Vcenter VCSA snmp trap

Hi,

I would like to monitor vCenter alarm in centreon. Snmp is configured in vCenter. Traps send from vCenter comes from 127.0.0.1 via UDP,  That cause  Centreon can't identify sender.

Here is the message in /var/log/messages on Centreon CES:

2013-03-06T15:36:10.697647+01:00 CENTREON snmptrapd[3112]: 2013-03-06 15:36:10 CENTREON [127.0.0.1] (via UDP: [VCSA_IP]:47417) TRAP, SNMP v1, community SNMP#012#011SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.6876.4.3 Enterprise Specific Trap (203) Uptime: 4:50:41.10#012#011SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.6876.4.3.308.0 = INTEGER: 2#011SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.6876.4.3.304.0 = STRING: "Gray"#011SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.6876.4.3.305.0 = STRING: "Red"#011SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.6876.4.3.306.0 = STRING: "_test3 - Event: Entered maintenance mode (208)#012Summary: Host ESX3 in New Datacenter has entered maintenance mode#012Date: 03/06/13 14:36:09#012User name: root#012Host: ESX3#012Resource pool: clu1#012Data center: New Datacenter#012"#011SNMPv2-SMI::enterprises.6876.4.3.307.0 = STRING: "ESX3"

Here is the snmptt.log entry for the same alert in CES:

Wed Mar  6 15:37:38 2013 .1.3.6.1.4.1.6876.4.3.0.203 3 "Status Event" 127.0.0.1 - This notification is sent on entity alarm state change, by the vCenter Server SNMP agent. Any idea? With a Windows based vCenter, sender is correct.

Hope I was clear in my explanation.

Thanks in advance,

Frederic.

Hi all,

I'm using vSphere 5.1.

When doing Storage vmotion a poweron VM between 2 local disks, I decided to cancel the task (around 33%).

I waited 6 hours, but the task didn't cancel.

So I decided to restart vCenter Services.

Then a duplicated VM appearred in "Discovered VM..."

I couldn't rename / remove from inventory / Delete from disk, vCenter says it' not in an allowed state.

The source VM is still power on.

Any help is appreciated.

VMware vSphere Web Client - migrate option greyed out

$

When selecting a VM to migrate the option to migrate is greyed out.  In fact, Power On, Migrate, Revert to Current Snapshot are greyed out.  I would like to migrate this VM to another host and datastore.

ESXi version 5.1.0 build 1021289

VMware vCenter Server, 5.1.0 build 947673

I've migrated 154 VMs and out of the 154 VMs migrated approximately a dozen VMs would not allow for live migrations(migrate... option greyed out).  I could not identify any commonality between the dozen VMs that did not allow for live migrations.

I really need to migrate this VM in a live state if at all possible.

When vCenter checks to see if a VM is a valid candidate to migrate, what does it check for because the migrate option is NOT grey for about a second before it becomes greyed out?

Moving Inventory Service to Another Server

Does anyone have any suggestions or pointers to articles on moving the inventory service of an existing environment to its own dedicated server?

We are planning our vSphere 5.1 upgrade from 5.0 and currently Inventory Services are running on the same server as vCenter.  Our environment is quite large (400 hosts & 6000+ VMs) and vCenter has been running slow for some time.  I'm wondering if I can move the Inventory Service to another server during our upgrade.

Thanks for any advice!

Hello,

I've not seen this one before so I'm hoping someone else has as I can't find anything on Google.

The VirtualCenter Server service on our vCenter is refusing to start.  I've tried a couple of times and have also rebooted the server without any progress.  The vpxd log shows the following at the end:

VCenter 5.1 update 1 upgrade fails with "insert disk 1", now vcenter won't start.

I’m having a problem with updating VCenter 5.1 to 5.1 update 1.

I downloaded the ISO then mounted it on the VCenter server at our D/R site (it’s not gone “live” yet, so it makes a good test).
I opened up the disk, then started with the SSO install.  I went through the opening screens, entered the master password, etc.  It then got to the “copying files” screen. It then popped up a dialog to “insert disk 1” with the option to “retry” or “cancel”.  After retrying a couple of times, I hit “cancel” it then “backed out”.

I did some searching and found an article where that error showed up if you were doing an upgrade on a VCenter system that had originally been installed by using the files on the drive, but were using an ISO/DVD for the upgrade.  I copied the files from the DVD to a folder on the hard drive and was going to restart the install.  However, the update would fail before it got to the copying files section.  The install log seemed to indicate the directory rename was failing.

Also, after that, the SSO service wouldn’t restart, it was giving me file not found type errors.  Looking at the VMWare “program files” folders, I found that the install had started renaming various directories, adding a hex number to the end of certain folders.

I removed the hex string from the folders and was able to start the SSO service.  However, when I try to start the VCenter server service, it fails with an error 2.

I’ve tried rebooting, but no luck; it still won’t start the VCenter service.

Fortunately, this site isn’t active yet, so there’s not much to lose if I have to reinstall.  I also have backups of the SQL database, although since the SQL system wasn’t affected, if I do a re-install it should find the database files.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

error 29114 cannot connect to db during VCenter 5.1 SSO install

$

I'm attempting to install VCenter 5.1 (build 947939)  and I've selected the simple install and told the installer to use SQL 2008 express.

So, the install gets to a point where it generates the above error. The log shows:

RunSSOCommand:: error code returned is 14 while launching C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\SSOServer\utils\rsautil.cmd

According to http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2036318 this occurs when the SSO database RSA (default SSO DB name) does not meet the prerequisites for the SSO installation and the RSA DB table space RSA_INDEX has a filegroup type of PRIMARY, instead of RSA_INDEX.

Ok... Why is it occuring if the 'simple' installer is doing the installation of everything? Is that a bug in the installer and if so is it fixed or should I just give up using the incorrectly named simple installer?

Thanks.

I came in today and have no access no to the vCenter Host with my normal Windows Authentication, though I can login with my Windows creds. just fine. I can login to the IP of ESXi with root and password, but not with the vSphere Client nor Web Client.

Any ideas?

Force Client Settings through vCenter

Hi,

I would like our vCenter Server run in our company to tell the vSphere Client to disable the First Steps-Page. For several reasons, we have frequently changing Clients, and we keep important notes for the use of a VM in the notes. Those should be directly accessible without changing settings or clicking a page away. If possible, the default starting page for any connection to this vCenter should be "Hosts and Clusters".

Any Ideas on how to accomplish this? It doesn't seem like there's any documentation to it. But for me it seems kind of awkward, that this hasn't been thought of before - so what did I miss?

Web Client not showing items listed in standard vsphere client

$

Hi all,

I have a strange problem which I hope you can help me with.

I've recently finished installing a fresh vCenter environment, details below -

  • Latest vCenter server (all components running on same VM)
    • SSO
    • Inventory
    • Web Client
    • Update Manager
    • vCenter Server
  • Databases running on a seperate MS SQL server
  • 5 HP blade servers running the latest ESXi HP 5.1U1 image

I've replaced the certificates for all components and everything seems to be good in that respect.

Now for the strange problem...

When I run the vSphere client and connect to the vCenter I can create a new Datacenter object and Cluster just fine. If I open the web client and logon the vCenter server is listed and I can configure settings but the DC and Cluster objects do not show. More confusing I then decided to create a test DC object from within the web client - the task ran successfully and completed but nothing showed in the web client however in the standard app it did show.

I have to say I didn't test any of this before doing certificate changes etc but I don't get any cert warnings or error messages.

I did try to add one of the blades to the Cluster through the app and it came back with an error (didn't have a chance to screenshot while in our DC but will get one ASAP).

Anyone come across this before? I am using accounts with full admin permissions across everything.

DR/BC Site, SRM, SSO & AD Authentication.

Not sure where to put this so feel free to move.

I'm in the midsts of testing DR/BC at the moment with SRM replicating machines down to our BC site. We've upgraded everything to 5.1.1a across the board and since moving to SSO we've had our fair share of issues. Some we've resolved but one particularly important one involves not being able to authenticate with our offsite domain controller at the BC site when we pull the plug on the metro line.

I can login to the offsite VC via the Web Client using normal credentials from our main site absolutely fine but when I change the LDAP authentication to the offsite DC via the SSO config page as admin@system-domain then I can't login. I get 'authentication failed'.

I've also noticed I have 'Failed to initialize start-up services' and a message advising me on installing a vCenter Server system when I login. I'm not convinced SSO is setup correctly even though we've reinstalled three times now.

bc_vc_sso.png

This is obviously a hurdle we need to overcome because if we can't login when we pull the plug between the sites to simulate a DR/BC situation then we can't recover the VMs.

Massive fail.

Mix of HP and Cisco Blades cluster. Need to patch with UM

Hello,

At some point i had to add a cisco vib to patch my cisco ESXi blades and respective vmware patches to the Cisco ESXi Hosts.

Now, i have to patch the HP ESXi clusters.

The fact i have in the repository the cisco one, of course it shows as missing when i scan the HP ESXi hosts.

Will Update Manager be smart enough to say, your HP ESXi hosts do not need this cisco patch...i can continue with the other ones ?

Or i have to create a fixed baseline to add the missing ones and remove the cisco one ?

vSphere 4.0 VMFS Volume grow issue - cannot select Extent after "Increase"

$

Hi,

I'm trying to get the Volume Grow to work but having difficulty - it's not working right.  It is a fresh install of VSphere 4.0.

Using the vCenter Client, I connect to the ESX Server, then go to the Configuration Tab.

Under the DataStore details, I see:

92.25 GB Capacity

71.18 GB Used

21.07 GB Free

If I click on Properties, the Volume Details show:  VMFS 3.31

Volume Properties:

DataStore Name: esx1:storage1

Total Capacity: 92.25GB

The disk capacity itself is 200GB, also reflected in the information on the right as listed (re: Device)

It lists Primary Partition Info, and Logical Partition Info, etc. on the right as well.

The Extents section in the esx1:storage1 Properties shows this:

Local VMware, Disk (mpx.vmhba0:C0:L0:T0):3

Problem is this: If I click on "Increase" button, a pop-up for Increase DataStore Capacity comes up, but it is blank.

Essentially, I am not presented with any Extent device to subsequently select whatsoever, after clicking on "Increase", hence the next Tab is greyed out, etc.

I have 200 GB disk capacity, but want to grow the VMFS volume up from 92.25 GB. I am not being given any options upon selecting "Increase"

Is there a good reason it is blank (no choices, nothing to select) upon commencing the "Increase" action?

Thanks much for any insight..

Failed to connect to VMware Lookup Service

$

Hello,

First off I just wanted to point out that I realize this had been asked tons before, but in my situation I am not using the vCenter Appliance.   I am using Windows 2008 R2 servers.

Four servers

wjb1000 is vcenter server

wjb1001 is database server (VUM and vCenter)

wjb1002 is Web Server, VUM server

wjb1003 is SSO using sql express

I followed the instructions in the following blog to replace my certs:

http://derek858.blogspot.ca/2012/09/vmware-vcenter-51-installation-part-1.html

Not sure where in the process it broke, but I can no longer log on to the web server without getting the following error:

Failed to connect to VMware Lookup Service https://wjb1003.dabeach.ca:7444/lookupservice/sdk - SSL certificate verification failed.

If I browse to https://wjb1003.dabeach.ca:7444/lookupservice/sdk the certificate shows as valid.

All other services are connecting without issues and showing valid certificates.

To make sure everything was working properly I went through the following article

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2035011

Because I could not logon to the web server I used the command line method of registering and then I restarted the services in order as specified.

Any help would be appreciated.

Walter
