High cpu usage on newly created 5.5 vcenter (build 1623101)

$

Hi Admins!

I dont understand why my newly created vcenter use to much cpu resources.

Java(TM) Platform Binary uses 50% of cpu resources

Environment:

6 ESX hosts (5.5)

1 virtual vcenter (5.5)

150 VMs

My vcenter server is running as a VM (win2012r2) configured with 4 vcpus ( Our old vcenter had 2 vcpus and had no issues)

Vanilla install

Any advice how i should tackle this?

Cheers

Tylor

Unable to decrypt passwords in customization spec

$

The exact error I get when I attempt to deploy a template is "The virtualcenter server is unable to decrypt passwords stored in the customization specification."

I have found previous mention that when you uninstall VC and then reinstall it you can no longer use old customization specifications.  I have done this, but I have since DELETED all old specs.

I cannot even deploy a template with brand new customization settings (although I am assuming it saves those settings to a temp file for sysprep to use).  Have I fubarred myself completely by previously uninstalling VC server?

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

"VMware highly recommends." Version 5.5U3b and earlier version hosts?

$

Hi,

I will shortly be setting up a new Dell server with ESXi. The lowest compatible version it can run is 5.5U3. I have two existing servers running their highest compatible ESXi version which is 4.1U3.

To manage the new server with vCenter Server appliance I have to upgrade the appliance, currently at 5.0, to 5.5U3b.

According to the interoperability matrix this version can also manage the ESXi 4.1 hosts but there is an annotation "VMware highly recommends you update ESXi hosts to 5.5U3b while managing them from vCenter Server 5.5U3b."

What are the implications of this somewhat vague message, will I lose manageability of the older servers? Has anybody run this configuration? Version 5.5U3 is the only version that overlaps in compatibility with the old hardware and the new.

Thanks

vCSA 6.0 install failure - unable to connect to ESXi Server

I have the vCSA ISO extracted to local drive and am running it from Internet Explorer as Administrator mode. After allowing the plugin, I click Install.

I click Accept, then Next.

At this point, I am unable to proceed past 2. Connect to target server step.

This is the error code which I can not get past no matter what I try:

"Cannot connect to target server. Invalid FQDN or IP address."

I can enter FQDN, IP address, root or domain accounts and nothing works. I even tried connecting to a virtual ESXi 5.5 u2 server with nothing configured but IP address and root password.

I've tried from utility servers, and from my user workstation, no luck -> same error.

The ESXi hosts are not in lockdown mode or in maintenance mode. I've tried all of about 30 different IP addresses and FQDNs for the various ESXi 5.5 hosts.

The hosts do have new ECA-signed ssl certificates, and i thought this might be an issue, but the virtual ESXi server i deployed didn't work either, and that had the default VMware certs.

I've tried reinstalling the Client Integration 6.0 plugin, restarting workstation/utility servers.

I've tried Firefox and IE 11 but nothing appears to work.

I've verified that the FQDN or IP and username/password works when connecting via the vSphere Client so I know I'm not fat-fingering it into the setup wizard.

What gives? What am I missing? Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a way to collect logs for this? I tried looking for them but also couldn't find anything.

template actions grayed out

Hi,

Today I've found out that for one of my templates some of the actions are grayed out. I can successfully deploy vm from this template, however I can't convert it to vm, nor rename it, nor remove it from inventory, nor delete it from disk. There are no on-going actions for this template currently. How can I find out why those actions are grayed out (my other templates are just fine, hasn't got those actions grayed out)?

vCenter Appliance syslog rotation

$

Hi,

In the normal Windows based vCenter, there are options to set log rotation settings for the syslog service to which the ESXi-hosts are logging.

I can't find this option in the vCenter Appliance. Does it do this automatically? Or do I need to do manual scripting for this?

Lockdown mode is greyed out

I am using vSphere ESXi 4.1 on one of our hosts and we had some issues that we had to remove one host from our vCenter. Now when we are trying to add the host back again to vCenter its giving an error of permission denied. This is because the lockdown mode is enabled.

When I try to disable it through console the option "Configure lockdown mode" is grey.

Remove vSphere Web Client Evaluation Mode License

We recently installed vCenter Server Appliance to replace the existing vCenter server.  It automatically installs a Evaluation Mode license and then gives warnings that licenses are about to expire.  Since we already own an Enterprise license, we added these licenses to the new vCenter server and then added the existing hosts to the new vCenter server.  The hosts were added to the correct license key and the vCenter server was added to the correct license key.  The Evaluation Mode license now has a 0 usage.  Everything is working correctly except that the eval license is still sitting there and we are still getting warnings.  It appears that the only way to get rid of this is to upgrade the eval license to a purchased license, but we don't need to upgrade since we already have a valid Enterprise license.

How can we remove the eval license and remove the warnings that this is generating?

VCSA 5.5 Hostname Change Problem

Hi,

I am working on getting a new implementation of VCSA v5.5 up and running and I have the VM created and working, but I am having an issue changing the name of the server.  I am running the /opt/VMware/share/vami/vami_config_net program and setting the new name.  I then exit the program and reboot the VM and the old name comes back instead of the new name.  I have even tried setting the hostname using the Linux HOSTNAME command and it looks like it takes, but once again, as soon as I reboot the server, it reverts back to the old hostname.

Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks,

Unable to start the vCenter / Management Web Services

$

Hi All,

I recently moved our vCenter installation to another server "vCenterServer" from the original server "Win12-ban", I have left the database on "Win12-ban" and created a DSN on "vCenterServer" which tests successfully when connecting into the database from the "vCenterServer" database. When I originally set this all up it worked a dream, I was originally using my own domain account to start the service (rather than the local system account), but now none of these accounts will start the service. I really want to be using the local account as I want to be able to see performance stats within vcenter.

The error message I get when trying to start the service is:

Followed by this in the event viewer:

The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

I have tested the DSN from the machine with vCenter installed and it tests successfully, which suggests there is a connection from the vCenter Server to the database, has anyone encountered similar issues?

vCenter 5.5 AD Authentication Help

Hello,

I was successfully able to install my vCenter Server 5.5. For identity sources I have vsphere.local as default but I have also set-up AD (Integrated Windows Authentication) under configuration. I want to be able to log on using an AD account.

I am able to set vCenter Server permissions using the AD account (users / groups populate just fine from AD domain) and set it with role of Administrator. However I can't log on using the AD account to vCenter server. I keep getting that the username / password is incorrect though I know it isn't. Am I missing something? I have tried in context of

domain\user

user@domain.local

user itself but no go.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Why does template customization make the NIC disconnected??

$

I've been testing template customization with a Win2k3 Enterprise 'gold' template.

Every time I deploy from this template, the newly created VM does not have its NIC set to connect at power on.

How do I fix this??

It does not seem to matter which kind of NIC -- flexible or enhanced vmxnet.

Having to reset the settings every time sort of ruins the whole idea of templates deployment.

VC 2.5 u4 and ESX 3.5 u3 -- VIC running on Vista...initial testing seemed to work, but today the NICs won't connect...

Thank you, Tom

Any harm in disabling the VSAN Health Service?

$

Since updating to vCenter / vSphere 6 update 2, I'm starting to see a steady stream of VSAN Health tasks being logged in vcenter.  However, I'm not using or even licensed for VSAN so I'm a little stumped.  .  The events being logged every few seconds are:

Retrieve a ticket to register the Virtual SAN VASA Provider

and

     Update option values

If I stop the VSan Health Monitoring Service, these events stop.

My question is, if I'm not actually using VSAN, is there any harm in disabling the Health Monitor service?  I'm assuming no, but would like to get confirmation

Permissions in vCenter 6.0 - limiting access to VMs

$

I am trying to set up permissions in vCenter 6.0 by setting up groups and limiting access to folders by groups. These permissions work in the VMs and Templates view, in the Datastores view and Networks view. However, those permissions don't seem to work in the Host and Clusters view.

If I want a user to be able to create a VM, I need to enable propagate on the cluster to allow 'Allocate resources to Virtual Machine'. This, however, opens up ALL of the VMs to the users at the Hosts and Clusters view, even those that they specifically have No Access set under VMs and Templates views. Without the propagate permission, users can't create a VM in the cluster, even though that permission is enabled on each host.

I don't want to use Resource Pools to organize and secure VMs, as that's not the purpose of the the Resource Pools.

Any ideas what I am missing here?

Could not start the vmware virtualcenter server service on local computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Good afternoon.

We've seemed to develop a problem with one of our servers running Virtual Center that prevents us from logging in with VSphere.

Windows gives the following error:

Windows could not start the vmware virtualcenter server service on local computer.Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I checked our app log for errors, and this is what I found:

ODBC error: (08001) - [SQL Native Client]TCP Provider: Timeout error .

Error getting configuration info from the database

  • Vpxd::ServerApp::Init Init failed: VpxdVdb::Init(Vdb::GetInstance(), false, false)*

  • Failed to intialize VMware VirtualCenter. Shutting down...*

Forcing shutdown of VMware VirtualCenter now

Any idea what might be causing our issue?

I saw a discussion from last year about this where the user was asked to post his error log, but he never did. So I thought I'd give it a shot.

Thanks!

Installing vcenter appliance is not an easy thing

Maybe it was firefox's block of flash, maybe there's a problem with the client integration plugin, but firefox keeps requesting to restart it due to the plugin being installed. Got a clean copy and then it worked, although I do get the occasional time out when opening the installation page.

I was a bit surprised I needed a dhcp server running despite providing a fixed ipaddress when installing the platform controller, but I got that installed as well. The problem I'm currently having is installing the vcenter bit, by itself. Filling in all the requested info and letting the installation run its course, I get the following results.

The installation page displays the message

Export to Excel

We're using Vsphere 4.1i u1 Standard on 6 hosts with Vcenter Standard server .

I have a problem exporting lists to Excel.

I right click the list to show me the virtual machine memory the go to Export to export the list. When I open the list in Excel, I see that memory field is empty in some lines. But this might not happen, if export again. It's very random. I noticed that it happens also on some of global fields. Sometimes I get full export and sometimes, fields are missing.
