Cannot use "Launch Console" from the VMware Web Client on a Mac

$

I recently upgraded my vCenter Appliance and my ESXi host to 5.5. When I did that i noticed I could now install the client integration plugin on my mac. It is nice that I can upload files from my mac but I noticed that if I try to launch the console for a virtual machine I get a error that this page cannot be displayed, I tried Safari, Firefox and Chrome from my Mac and it does not work. It does work from Windows. So it it a case that it half works or could there be something else wrong.

Is anyone else using a Mac to access the web client for vCenter? I am very curious to know if It is a case that this is a big or I just get half the functionality since I am on a Mac.

Maintenance/cleanup on data stores?

$

Like most users, we create VM's, use them a while, then use vCenter to down them and remove them when they are not needed anymore.  Also, we have create VM's and for some reason it was not configured properly or we tried an "an experiment" the didn't work and we removed it.

in browsing the data stores, I notice items there that I feel like are left over from one of these deletions but are reluctant to try to delete it for fear of blowing up one of my critical VM's.

Are there VMWare tools, or third party tools that can analyze the data stores and identify the trash and help manage them?

I have installed an external PSC (6.0 U1) and have attempted to replace the machine SSL certificate with a custom certificate from our CA

I have tried using both the certificate-manager CLI and the new GUI based replacement

Both times the certificates were accepted but when services were restarted the VMware Component Manager service hangs and fails to restart

I am using windows and not the appliance

has anyone else experienced this?

Cluster to Cluster vMotion Fails

$

I'm in the process of migrating 1000+ virtual machines from an old cluster to a new one.

I'm able to migrate VMs between the two clusters, but only by specifying the exact destination host's name. If I select the destination cluster (rather than a specific host), the migration fails with the error "DRS cannot find a host to power on or migrate the virtual machine". Anyone know why this is happening?

As a matter of management, I want to be able to migrate machines to the cluster itself (rather than have to choose a specific host within the cluster).

The source and destination clusters each have their own vDS, each with 128 ports on their vMotion port groups. The source and destination clusters' DRS level are set to fully automated. My vCenter version is 6.0.0 (build 3339083). The hosts in both clusters are all running ESXi version 6.0.0 (build 3568940).

vSphere 5.5U3 - Cannot enable DRS affinity Rule

I have created a vApp with 16 VMs in a vSphere 5.5 enabled cluster.  In each vApp, a two VMs (total of 8 pairs) that  need to reside on the same host as they are connection to an Internal Only virtual portgroup on a VDS switch.  I have created the DRS rules for each pair via Powercli.  The VMs are added correctly, however only one rule is enabled.  The other 7 rules show disabled in the GUI and with the Get-DRS rule PowerCLI command.  I have attempted to enable the rules (check the box) in the GUI and through the PowerCLI without success.  No errors show up in the logs or when I run the PowerCLI Set-DRS rule.  Recent Tasks show the  Reconfigure cluster task completed, but the rules are not enabled.

How do I get the DRS rules enabled.

Thanks

Dear VMware Community!

I don't have any web interface after install. Could you help me to solve this issue?

I installed successfully VMware-ESXi-5.5.0, and then downloaded and deployed VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.5101-1398493.

This is nmap scan results of vCenter Server Appliance:

High memory usage on server - java.exe and tomcat.exe

Hello I have vCenter Server, vSphere Client, vSphere update manager, and vSphere web client installed on my server.

I see that there are 3 java.exe processes taking up 2.3GB (all together), and tomcat6.exe taking up 750mb.

One Java process is taking up 1.2GB of ram.

Another Java process is taking up 570 MB of ram.

Another Java process is taking up 470 MB of ram.

So all together they are taking up 3gb of memory on this server.  Is this normal?

Or is there a way to get these processes down on RAM usage?

vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 U1 - cannot access VAMI on port 5480

Hi!

I successfully installed VMware ESXi 6.0 U1 Build 3073146 and then downloaded and deployed VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0.0 U1 Build 3018523.

The problem is that I cannot access the web interface on port 5480. IP address is pingable and the web client is working.

After reading some other topics I ran the command: netstat -plantu | grep 5480

Normal output would be (this is for a vCenter Appliance 5.5.0):

VCSA:~ # netstat -plantu | grep 5480

tcp        0      0 :::5480                 :::*                    LISTEN      2486/vami-lighttpd

Output on my system:

VCSA:~ # netstat -plantu | grep 5480

Could anyone help me to solve this issue?

Unable to login to vSphere Web Client - [500] SSO error: Cannot connect to the VMware Component Manager

$

Hi,

I have been testing out the latest vSphere, and have ran in to an issue with the vCenter Server Appliance.

I was able to access it via its web address as well as by the vSphere Client but after I rebooted the host that it was running on I can no longer access it.

This is for both the web address and client.

When I go to the address i get the usual certificate warning but after that I get:

A server error occurred.

[500] SSO error: Cannot connect to the VMware Component Manager

The vCenter Server Appliance is a virtual instance on the host.

I am able to connect directly to the host and the VM is running, as I can open the console session to it.

All this occurred after I rebooted the host to complete the install of the Mega RAID CLI and LSI Provider .VIB's

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Marcus

VCSA 6 Joining AD breaks the VCSA

Hi all,

I have followed the directions for joining VCSA 6 to AD to a "T", and noticed a couple strange things:

  • When I click OK following the "Join Active Directory" step, there is no indication of a task being completed. It just dumps me back at the same screen where I started, with no domain or OU listed
  • When I reboot the VCSA, after about 20 minutes I am able to attempt to log-on, but get this message:

A server error occurred.

[400] An error occurred while processing the authentication response from the vCenter Single Sign-On server. Details: Status: urn:oasis:names:tc:SAML:2.0:status:Responder, sub status: null.

Error when loading VMWare vSphere Client

$

Hey guys, I'm a newbie to the VMWare world and have just experienced my first problem.

My system was installed by a 3rd party vendor that, due to uncontrolable circumstatnces, is not accessible at this time.  So, I'm attempting to see if anyone might have a resolution for me.

I'm using ESX 4.  When I open the vSphere Client application and enter my login credentials, I receive the following slew of errors:

The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

VMware Remote Console unrecoverable error: (player)

SSLLoadSharedLibrary: Failed to load library libeay32.dll:126

The last error writes a dump file.

This application has always worked flawlessly.  The problem started while I was on a business trip last week.  I'm suspecting that some type of update (Microsoft, Java, etc.) is probably what is causing this issue.

I tried re-registering the dll files but it didn't make a difference.  I would love to re-install the application as suggested, but I'm currently unable to locate that download on VMware's site.

I'm just curious if anyone has any suggestions or possibly the location of the downloads?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Removing VM from inventory database implications

$

Hi,

I'm wanting to know, if I remove a VM from the inventory, what happens at the DB level?  Are the records (tasks/events I'm concerned about) purged or retained under some other unique ID?  As I've noticed that when you re-add to the inventory the records aren't accessible via the client.

We've had an issue recently with backup jobs of a few VMs spamming the task/event log with 'map disk region' and filling the VC database.  So I'm hoping that removing said VMs from inventory and adding back in will release said space so we can then do a shrinkdb.

Can anyone confirm as I can't find any documentation to suggest what happens to the DB records.

Thanks

vCenter 5.5 certificate replacement issue

$

I'm having problems getting the self signed certificates for vCenter v5.5 replaced with Enterprise CA certificates.  I am using the certificate replacement tool from VMware.  The SSO certificate is successfully replaced so I move on to having the Inventory service trust the SSO certificate.  They succeeds as well but I think all its doing is bouncing the Inventory service.  I then go to install the Inventory service certificate and get:

[Sat 03/15/2014 - 15:51:06.27]: The services that are restarted as a part of this operation are: vCenter Inventory Service.

Enter the location to the new Inventory Service SSL chain (default value is: c:\certs\Inventory\chain.pem):

[Sat 03/15/2014 - 15:51:20.41]: Cannot determine if Inventory Service is registered with Single Sign-On - errorlevel is 1

If I look at the logs, I see the following:

[Sat 03/15/2014 - 15:51:15.43]: The Inventory Service is installed at "C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service"

[Sat 03/15/2014 - 15:51:20.39]: Exiting Inventory Service update SSL certificate due to errors

Obviously there is something about the CA chain that it doesn't like.  If I look at my cert store on the vCenter server, I have my Root CA in the Trusted Root store.  In the Intermediate Store I have both the Root and Intermediate.  If I browse to the lookup service (https://FP-CSVC01.domain.loc:7444/lookupservice/sdk) from a web browser, the certificate shows as valid and throws no errors so there should be nothing wrong with the certificate.

The format of the chain.pem in the Inventory directory is correct as well.  It is the Inventory cert, followed by the Intermediate cert, followed by the Root cert.  No extra spaces anywhere.

I have also tried to manually replace the certificates and it essentially fails at the same spot.  SSO replacement goes fine then I go to unregister the Inventory service and the SSL handshake fails.

Funny thing is that if I am using vCenter 5.1, I get past this all without issue.

Having a problem adding one host to HA/DRS Cluster

I've got three hosts in a DRS cluster.  Two of them set up HA without any problems, but the 3rd node has been having issues.  I've verified DNS (less than 30 characters) and that the gateway is set up correctly.  There are no VM's on this server right now, so I know there isn't anything inside there that would cause a problem.

The only thing I can find in the addnode.log is that its complaining that prot 8042 is not available, but I can't find any processes that are using this port.

Cannot add host to vCenter server because datastore is shared with an existing vCenter host

$

I recently removed a physical host from a vCenter Server virtual appliance and am not able to add it back to vCenter Server because I get an error about the datastore already existing.  I am running a simple vCenter Server environment with two physical hosts and shared storage.  I have only been administering vCenter for a few months, so I am relatively new to the technology and processes.  I have searched the Internet for a few days now, but have not found any documentation of anyone experiencing the same problem as I (which I find odd considering how simple my configuration and problem), so I wanted to get some help from the VMware community.

I got an error message one day that vCenter Server couldn't connect to one of the two hosts so I removed the host (instead of disconnecting and connecting as I should have done).  Now I am not able to connect the host to vCenter server because the shared storage datastore conflicts with the same datastore used by the existing host in vCenter Server.  The error message I get is ""Datastore 'datastore_name' conflicts with an existing datastore in the datacenter that has the same URL (ds:///vmfs/volumes/UUID/), but is backed by different physical storage."  I try to unmount the datastore from the host, but get the following error message: "The resource 'Datastore Name: datastore_name VMFS uuid: UUID' is in use."  The error stack says, "Call "HostStorageSystem.UnmountVmfsVolume" for object "storageSystem" on ESXi "IP address" failed.  Cannot unmount volume 'Datastore Name: datastore_name VMFS uuid: 'UUID' because file system is busy. Correct the problem and retry the operation."  I have tried removing all virtual machines from inventory, putting the hosts in maintenance mode, rebooting the physical hosts, but none of my troubleshooting is helping.

I am not sure what steps to take to get this datastore unassociated with the host so that I can add it back into vCenter Server.  Any help you can provide me is appreciated.

VMware Component Manager service fails to start in vCenter Server 6 Update 2

$

Hello,

A brief idea of my test lab environment:

vCenter Servers:

vc1 - Registered to psc1 in Site1

vc2 - Registered to psc2 in Site2

External Platform Services Controllers:

psc1 - Site1

psc2 - Site2

SSO Domain: vsphere.local

I upgraded from vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3d to vCenter Server 6.0 Update 2. The vCenter servers in 5.5 had integrated / embedded SSO's and all the services running on the same machine and were in linked mode before the upgrade and I removed them from linked mode before the upgrade. They were upgraded to vCenter Server 6.0 with Embedded PSC and they automatically entered Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM).

After the step above, I deployed 2 external PSC's psc1 and psc2 in replication mode with vc1 and vc2 in the same site's Site1 and Site2 respectively. I then migrated the embedded psc's of both the vCenter Servers to their respective external psc replication partners by running the command cmsso-util reconfigure --repoint-psc "psc1/psc2" --username administrator --domain-name "vsphere.local" --passwd "administrator_password". This operation completed successfully and my vCenter's were reconfigured as vCenter Server with External PSC.

After this, I followed VMware KB article 2127057 (Determining replication agreements and status with the Platform Services Controller 6.0 (2127057) | VMware KB) to make the 2 external psc's psc1 and psc2 replication partners of each other by running the command vdcrepadmin -f createagreement -2 -h psc2.clifford.local -H psc1.clifford.local -u administrator -w "administrator_password". I ran this command from psc2. This operation also completed successfully and when I query the replication status of the replication partners psc1 and psc2, there is nothing wrong. However after restarting my vSphere Infrastructure, I see that vc1, psc1 and psc2 have all their services started successfully.

vc2 services seem to be failing to start, especially the VMware Component Manager service which is required for many other services to start. The VMware HTTP Reverse Proxy service starts successfully and I don't have any IIS role / feature installed on my machine. The error message that occurs while trying to manually start the service is as attached as file Error2.JPG in the discussion. The error from the Windows Event Log is as attached as file Error3.JPG in the discussion.

Please let me know how do I resolve this issue at the earliest.

vCenter 5.5 AD Authentication Help

Hello,

I was successfully able to install my vCenter Server 5.5. For identity sources I have vsphere.local as default but I have also set-up AD (Integrated Windows Authentication) under configuration. I want to be able to log on using an AD account.

I am able to set vCenter Server permissions using the AD account (users / groups populate just fine from AD domain) and set it with role of Administrator. However I can't log on using the AD account to vCenter server. I keep getting that the username / password is incorrect though I know it isn't. Am I missing something? I have tried in context of

domain\user

user@domain.local

user itself but no go.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.
