Foundation vs Standard

$

I am having trouble with working out the difference between the versions foundations and standard, I have a three site setup with three hosts in each site, I have two standard licences and two foundation and one 6 CPU for two fo the sites.

I understand that foundation will allow 3 host to be managed and that standard is unlimited provided you have enough CPU cals, can you use standard to manage hosts with foundation cals installed, or do a need a copy of standard for each site so that I can have linked management for all three sites.

Does Standard allow you to install vCenter in each site so you can manage any site for either of the 3 sites?

[Clustering] Single VM spanning across multiple physical hosts ?

$

Folks,

Is it possible to allocate to VM more resources than single ESX host have in order to  build single big VM out of many physical hosts?

For instance I have two ESX hosts with 2GHz and 16 GB DRAM each.

Would it be possible to run SINGLE VM which will be granted 4GHz and 32GB DRAM ? Or maybe 4GHz and 20 GB DRAM (to "borrow" some resources from other Host).

I'm reading about clustering/DRS technology in vSphere and it's not said explicite that it's possible. We always have references to ESX hosts - to dynamicly relocate from one Host to another etc.... DRS is introducing "global" scheduler but I'm not sure whether it works that way.

Any good links are much appreciated !

VM permission to allow only mounting of an iso in local datastore.

I have a set of limted users who are only given the 'power options and media' permissions to their specific VM's and nothing else.  They can get to do what they need; however, I have a need to let them edit the cd settings and mount an .iso file directly out of the local datastore on the esx host.

They also get permission denied when its set to "Client Device" and hit the button to mount their local CD.

I would prefer to mount the .iso from the 'Datastore ISO file" but it would suffice to get the "Client Device" working.

I have tried to give datatstore browse and modify device settings but they do not ungrey the browse next to the mounting of iso file.  Manual type in doesnt work either.  I still want to limit them without giving administrator access.

vCenter Server Appliance 6.0 U1 - cannot access VAMI on port 5480

Hi!

I successfully installed VMware ESXi 6.0 U1 Build 3073146 and then downloaded and deployed VMware vCenter Server Appliance 6.0.0 U1 Build 3018523.

The problem is that I cannot access the web interface on port 5480. IP address is pingable and the web client is working.

After reading some other topics I ran the command: netstat -plantu | grep 5480

Normal output would be (this is for a vCenter Appliance 5.5.0):

VCSA:~ # netstat -plantu | grep 5480

tcp        0      0 :::5480                 :::*                    LISTEN      2486/vami-lighttpd

Output on my system:

VCSA:~ # netstat -plantu | grep 5480

Could anyone help me to solve this issue?

Why does template customization make the NIC disconnected??

$

I've been testing template customization with a Win2k3 Enterprise 'gold' template.

Every time I deploy from this template, the newly created VM does not have its NIC set to connect at power on.

How do I fix this??

It does not seem to matter which kind of NIC -- flexible or enhanced vmxnet.

Having to reset the settings every time sort of ruins the whole idea of templates deployment.

VC 2.5 u4 and ESX 3.5 u3 -- VIC running on Vista...initial testing seemed to work, but today the NICs won't connect...

Thank you, Tom

vSphere Web Client Fails

I'm not sure of the correct forum for this question. I'm trying to connect from my workstation to the Web Client for a vCenter 5.1.0 Server. All I get is "This page can't be displayed" or a close equivalent in IE, Firefox, or Chrome. On the other hand, I am able to connect to the vCenter using the old vSphere client. And everyone else in my office is able to connect to this vCenter using the Web Client, so I'm the only one who can't. Rebooting my workstation didn't help. I've got VMware Client Integration Plug-in 5.1.0 installed on my workstation. What can I do to resolve this problem?

Thanks!

I am currently running VC 2.5 virtualized. WIndows 2003 SP2 with SQL Express 2005. Everytime I reboot the server I received Event ID 7024 - The VMware VirtualCenter Server service terminated with service-specific error 2 (0x2). Eventually I am able to manually start the service and everything is fine. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

vsphere appliance log size

Hi,

How can I limit specific logging in vsphere server appliance?

For instance i have the default /storage/log 10G partition with almost 1G in /storage/log/vmware/vsphere-client/logs/access/.

Those are uncompressed .txt files dating back from almost a year ago.

Shouldn't there be logrotate and compression in place??

I already followed the KB#2143565 and loosened the sso logs. Is there a similar config for vsphere-client logging?

There are also other massive logs:

Solution to full transaction log for database VIM_VCDB

$

Hi,

after having struggled to solve the reason for above error-message over the past weeks, i want to share my experience and the solution.

The information to (really) get rid of the well known error message is allready available online but scattered over different places.

Let me sum things up:

My environment:

We have three different Vsphere 4.1 Essential Environments with 120 VMs on 3 vm-hosts each. Two of them running since 2 years now, without any problems. They all are deployed using the MS SQL 2005 express-edition supplied with the vcenter server installer. The 4GB datasize limit of this edition should not be a real limit for our usecases.

My problem:

2 of them started showing the following "transaction log"-full messages in the windows eventlog after having upgraded to vsphere 4.1 U2.

--

Event 9002, MSSQL$SQLEXP_VIM

The transaction log for database 'VIM_VCDB' is full. To find out why space in the log cannot be reused, see the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases

--

This was repeated every 6 hours at 1:01 am, 7:01 am, 1:01pm, 7:01pm each day on both vcenter server hosts.

So - what changed? what to do? Did we hit the 4GB limit of the engine when datasize + logsize is greater then 4GB ?

The workaround on

http://www.vladan.fr/how-to-fix-%E2%80%9Ctransaction-log-for-database-%E2%80%98vim_vcdb%E2%80%99-is-full%E2%80%9D-errors/

was easely spotted and applied. I increased the transaction log area limit vom 512MB to 2GB as suggested.

This eased the situation a bit but dit not really solve the underlying problem. The error-messages continued. More problematic: the vcenter server service started to crash - so the problem started to reach my users. Manual shrink's of the logarea solved those cases.

The situation at this point:

Site1: vcenter-database is about 2.4GB in size, transaction log limit is increased to 3, 4  then 5 GB. Still "transaction log" errors.

Site2: vcenter-database is about 1.8GB in size, transaction log limit increased to 2, 3 then 6 GB. Still "transaction log" errors.

At this point we where a little bit puzzled. Our production vcenter database is running since 3 years now, has an 360days retention period but is still only 800 MB in size. Why are  the databases of our development enviroments this large?

So. What lead to a solution where the table names VPX_EVENT_ARG and VPX_EVENT i found mentioned in a forum message.

A closer inspection of our vcenter database in site1 using the SQL Server Management Studio showed this picture:

VPX_EVENT was about 700 MB in size, with an additional index of 400MB

VPX_EVENT_ARG was about 400 MB in size with an additional index of 300 MB.

So in sum, this tables did hold about 1.5GB of data. A look into the table led to details for events up to 2 years ago. Seems they never had been cleaned up, despite the retention period was never longer than 180days on those servers. In site1 the EVENT-table had 2.1 million lines of event-data, in site2 we had 1.1 million lines.

As we dont need event information older than 30 days we could easely drop all those information. Using the procedure described here:

  http://blogs.vmware.com/kb/2010/09/dealing-with-vcenter-41-database-tables-growth.html

we were able to simply drop/erase all of the existing event history, starting  from scratch afterwards.

In short: During a maintenance-windows we simply made a full-backup of the database and issued

truncate table vpx_event_arg;

followed by
delete from vpx_event;

SOLUTION:

But - here comes the trick - whereas the "truncate"-step only takes seconds and no transaction-log space at all, the "delete" took 35 minutes and  13GB(!) of transaction log. On site2 it took 15 minutes and 8GB of transaction log size. With the default limits of 1GB or the suggest 2-3GB for the transaction log in place from the tipps above this procedure would never had succeeded. So, we needed 13 GB of transaction log size to erase 1.5GB of actual data consisting of 2.1 million table rows on site1.

Which leads us this this conclusion: The updated vcenter 4.1 (u2 ?) tried to clean up the mess in the event-tables but never had a chance to come to an successfull end with the default (or slightly increased) transaction log limits discussed everywhere. If your disk-space allows, increase the transaction log limit to 20GB (guess your actualy needs based on my numbers above).

The real problem here is, i think, the counterintuitive storage needs for the transaction log when cleaning up internal data. Who had guessed a factor of 10 in the first place? Anyone?

I also suspect, the internal cleanup-procedures would have catched up by increasing the transaction log limit alone - but i havent tested this in practice.

Hope this helps

Kind Regards

No Inventory in WebClient (while vSphere Client is fine)

I am a VMWare Newbe.

I installed VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.0b released. (followed the TinkerTry instructions Deploy VMware's vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 in a home lab, without SSO errors - YouTube)

I could not configure a DataCenter over the WebClient, so I switch to vSphereClient.

Now I can't see the DataCenter (and all the inventory) in the WebClient (vSphereClient is fine).

If I try to create a DataCenter over the WebClient I get the message that "datacenter" is already there.

What could be the problem?

vpxd consuming all memory -- vCenter slooooooow and cannot connect

$

As reported in http://communities.vmware.com/message/2020222 we are still experiencing the issue with vpxd consuming huge amounts of RAM and causing severe vCenter slowness.  This has gotten much worse recently.  We are hoping to renew the conversation on this, as it is becoming intollerable, and our efforts have so far failed.

Configuratoin: VMware vCenter Server 5.0, update 1, version 5.0.0 build 623373.  Running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1, in a virtual machine with 4 vCPUs and 8 GB of memory, SQL database on same machine.

When the issue opccurs, the main vCenter executable, vpxd.exe uses up all available memory, causing severe vCenter slowness, to the point where vSphere Client cannot connect, tasks fail due to timeouts, remote desktop to the machine are extremely slow and almost completely unusable.  After stop/start of vpxd.exe service, or restart the Windows VM, the issue initially clears, but then returns later. We are now seeing this more than once per day, sometime 3 - 4 times in a single day.

In more detail:

- Windows task manager reports 99% of  memory is consumed.  Typically, this is around 6.5 GB of memory consumed  by vpxd.exe.

- Before the issue occurs, vpxd is typically consuming around 330 MB memory (reasonable)

- Other large consumers are sqlservr.exe around 1.0 GB, java.exe around 820 MB + 380 MB (there are two processes), tomecat6.exe 690 MB.  We think these are probably normal, and they do not grow out of control like vpxd does.

- During the issue, CPU also becomes very high, near 100%, as seen through vSphere Client performance

- VM is running current VMware tools (8.6.5, build 652272)

Things we have tried:

- Upgraded to vCenter Server 5.0u1

- Rebalanced vCPUs (as suggested in other thread).  Initially was 4 CPUs on 1 socket, changed to 2 CPUs on 1 socket, now 4 CPUs split across 2 sockets.

- Moved to VM version 8

- Set service to autostart, delayed

- General cleanup -- removed a bunch of servies we are not using (Orchestrator, Update Manger...)

Any further suggestions, known issues, FIXES, whatever would be helpful!

Trying to follow KB: 2118939 - Replacing the Lookup Service SSL certificate on a Platform Services Controller 6.0 - ls_update_certs.py - FAILURE

$

EDIT: Posted wrong KB in subject line and below (corrected KB the link shown below, was not able to edit Subject field above).

I am attempting to follow KB 2109074 - VMware KB: vCenter Server or Platform Services Controller certificate validation error for external VMware Solutions…

My steps relate to the 2 KB's linked to in the main KB article: 2109074

Everything goes fine in preparation to run the final command like getting the old certificate fingerprint, getting the new certificate file, etc.

When attempting to run the actual command in Windows (the most successful version of the command I am running as follows):

"C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\python\python.exe" ls_update_certs.py --url https://vcenter.domain.local/lookupservice/sdk --fingerprint b1:35:c1:9c:a5:59:dd:ab:3d:c2:50:e7:92:79:82:f0:b6:85:7d:c8 --certfile C:\certificates\new_machine.crt --user Administrator@vsphere.local --password "Passw0rd&"

BTW, the VMware KB says:

"Note: On Windows systems, enclose the password in double quotes."

I get is this error (fails on get-site-id) :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "ls_update_certs.py", line 19, in <module>

    args.password)

  File "C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\VMware Identity Services\lstool\s

cripts\lstoolutil.py", line 79, in modify_svc_ep_certs

    raise Exception("'lstool get-site-id' failed: %d" % rc)

Exception: 'lstool get-site-id' failed: 1

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've tried this on 2 different vCenter servers (both at 6.0u2) and get the same behavior, I've tried every combo of passwords for PSC/SSO like Passw0rd!   Pass-w0rd    P@ssw0rd  W34df*fdc4  ..etc, and tried it with or without quotes (2 quotes, 4 quotes), tried bash escape after password like: \   ...and nothing works. I'm not even sure if this is a password issue. A few lines above I see things showing this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Caused by: com.vmware.vim.vmomi.core.exception.CertificateValidationException: Server certificate chain not verified

Caused by: javax.net.ssl.SSLPeerUnverifiedException: peer not authenticated at sun.security.ssl.SSLSessionImpl.getPeerCertificates(SSLSessionImpl.java:421) at com.vmware.vim.vmomi.client.http.impl.ThumbprintTrustManager$Hostname Verifier.verify(ThumbprintTrustManager.java:296)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, I can successfully run this command (which doesn't seem to require a password):

"C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\python\python.exe" "C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\VMware Identity Services\lstool\scripts\lstool.py" get-site-id --url https://vcenter.domain.local/lookupservice/sdk"

..It works fine and shows the SSO name of default-sso-site.

All other aspects of the signed certificate install have succeed except the Lookup Service which is causing my NSX Manager install to not connect back up to the Lookup Service..

I also am getting the error from the Web Client showing this:

"Error occurred while processing request. Check vSphere WebClient logs for details."     (Refer to KB: https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2129053 )   ...caused by same issue as well:

Anyone else see this behavior or know of any possible way to recover from this without having to re-install? How to debug the .py scripts better? Is there any better documentation from VMware on how these scripts work? Can the Lookup Service be re-installed?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Some VMs not showing in vcenter

I have two host running ESXi 5.0 which I have succesfully added to my vcenter (5.0 client and server).  However one of the hosts is missing 3 vm's from its inventory.  I can connect directly to the ESXi 5.0 server and see all vm's running.  I am sure it is not coincidence that these three servers are my only linux servers (canned Squid proxy servers).

1) I stopped and started the Vcenter server services.  same results.

2) I have removed and readded the host. same results, but I do want to note that during the add process I did see that all servers showed in the list of vm's running on the host.

Thanks for any help!

I cannot seem to get file upload/download from datastores working on my 5.5b vcenter webclient. When browsing the datastore/folder There is only buttons to install the Client Integration Plugin, refresh, new folder and delete. The plugin is installed and I've tried using both IE11 and Chrome.

Maintenance mode will not do vmotion (HA enabled cluster)

Hi

I have a cluster that consist of 6 hosts where manual vmotion works fine, but when I put my hosts in Maintenance mode, it just doesn't vmotion the vm's to the other hosts in the cluster. This problem started after we had some major network problems and every host have been rebooted after the network problem was solved. I've done vmkping and looked in different logs without finding any clues. Any idea on how to fix this (so that I can update to Update 2 without putting to much manual work into it)?

Hello.

Have big problem with vSphere client

Today i press button Clear SSL certificate in IE on my Windows 7 OS

Then i faced with strange issue

I'm trying connect to vm console (client connected to vCenter) and i have an error ssl verification failure for "ip" due to a host thumbprint mismatch.

It's happend again then i trying to connect directly to ESXI

vCenter version 5.0,ESXi 5.0

What I tried to do - clear SSL ignore by regedit, reinstall vSphere client - it's not resolve a problem

I'm still not able to connect to any VM console

I'm trying connect from websphere - no luck, same error

Then i install client on different machine - all running ok

Cannot use "Launch Console" from the VMware Web Client on a Mac

I recently upgraded my vCenter Appliance and my ESXi host to 5.5. When I did that i noticed I could now install the client integration plugin on my mac. It is nice that I can upload files from my mac but I noticed that if I try to launch the console for a virtual machine I get a error that this page cannot be displayed, I tried Safari, Firefox and Chrome from my Mac and it does not work. It does work from Windows. So it it a case that it half works or could there be something else wrong.

Is anyone else using a Mac to access the web client for vCenter? I am very curious to know if It is a case that this is a big or I just get half the functionality since I am on a Mac.

SYSLOG collector in vSphere 6

Is the SYSLOG Collector in vSphere 6 discontinued?

Up to vSphere vCenter Server 5.5 there was an option under vSphere Support Tools to "Install vSphere Syslog Collector".

From the install screen of vSPhere 6 vCenter Server there is not an option to "Install vSphere Syslog Collector".

I know you can redirect the logs from ESXi hosts and vCenter Server to a Syslog host and I know there is a still a Syslog Service, but do you have to install a thrid party Syslog Server now and redirect the logs to that?  The vSphere documentation is not very clear.
