datastore performance reporting only keeps 1 hour

$

I'm trying to track down what I think are disk latency issues in mt Dell MD3000i  but the performance reporting for datastores in vcenter only seems to keep 1 hour (and can't be changed)  I can view space utilization statistics for any time period i want (not very useful as we don't add or remove vm's very much)  but who was the bright spark that thought 1 hour was enough performance data!  means I have to watch the thing constantly to try and "catch" any latency periods.  pleae tell me there is a way to change this!!!

Help.

Oh and who ever changed the way you post and navigate the forums needs to get fired!!!  this is brutal.  almost makes me not want to bother with the forums!  why can't you just navigate to a forum and create a thread there like ever other forum software on the internet!  must be inhouse programmers!!

Cannot login to VCENTER using domain credentials, authorize exception

Hi Guys,

I am running vcenter version 5.1 and my esxi servers are also 5.1.
Now, obviously the vcenter server is joined to the domain.

As we are upgrading the entire infrastructure, the old DC must be decommissioned and hence it is currently shut-down. All FSMO roles etc. have been transferred to the new DC and also the new DC is acting as DNS/DHCP server for the entire network.

We have got 50 PCs running in the network along with exchange server etc. and so far no signs of any glitches anywhere else

Now the issue I am having is that as soon as I shutdown the old DC, I can no longer access the VCENTER server using domain credentials. When I turn it on I can login fine.
The error I receive when I can't login -

1.  A general system error occured: Authorize Exception or
2. Access to VCENTER server was denied.
3. Taking too long to respond.

I followed the steps here http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1015639 i.e. unjoined vcenter server from domain and rejoined to domain whilst having old DC shutdown as well as turned on but absolutely no luck.

I can still log into VCENTER server using local admin login and password but teh issue is that my VEEAM backup is failing as well. It says "Task failed Error: Cannot complete login due to an incorrect user name or password." which is the whole reason I discovered this issue was related to VCENTER login via Vsphere client.

Kindly help

Currently have an ESX 4.1 server which I'm trying to migrate my VM from to a ESXi 5.5 server.  When I try to migrate I get a pbm.fault.PBMFault.summary with no additional information.  Logged into my vCenter server via vSphere Client.

Ideas?

What keeps turning off SSH on my hosts?

So inherited an environment running 5.1 (vCenter and ESXi)

I have one cluster that is I enable SSH from the security profile, it gets turned back off within a few minutes. This does not happen with new hosts I have added to that cluster or in any other cluster.

There are no host profiles, the hosts are NOT in lockdown mode. No scheduled tasks other than update mgr checks.

When I look at the events after its turned back off the user listed is the dcui@127.0.0.1 and shows it turning it off.

vsphere appliance log size

Hi,

How can I limit specific logging in vsphere server appliance?

For instance i have the default /storage/log 10G partition with almost 1G in /storage/log/vmware/vsphere-client/logs/access/.

Those are uncompressed .txt files dating back from almost a year ago.

Shouldn't there be logrotate and compression in place??

I already followed the KB#2143565 and loosened the sso logs. Is there a similar config for vsphere-client logging?

There are also other massive logs:

What permissions are needed to deploy from OVA/OVF

Our environment is vCenter 4.1 U1 and ESXi 4.1 U1. We have a multi-tenant Lab environment where users are isolated with separate Resource Pools and separate VM, Storage, and Network folders. The users are administrators to all of these.

They want to be able to deploy OVA/OVF templates but, they get this error (attached image) at this point. I'd like to know the minimum permissions required to allow this without exposing other tenants resources.

Installation of component VCSServiceManager failed for vCenter 6.0

Hi experts,

I tried to install vCenter 6.0, and got the following error:

  • Installation of component VCSServiceManager failed with error code '1603'. Check the logs for more details.

Checked the release notes, ipv4 stack is all fine.

I tried a couple of times, couldn't overcome this. Also tried to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0, failed with the same error.

How can I overcome this?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Forget to mention: I am installing this on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

The VMware vCenter Inventory Service service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function..

Tried connecting into the web interface and it states it cannot connect to the inventory server.  I see the service is stopped and when I try to start it, it fails.  Error message in event log: The VMware vCenter Inventory Service service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function..

I have rebooted the server and had the same issue.  I have a backup of the SQL/server but I have never ran the backup.bat as referred to in here: VMware KB: vCenter Inventory Service fails to start and cannot back up the Inventory Service database

I cannot seem to find a great article on what will be impacted by resetting the service fresh?

How to Monitor vCenter Appliance 6.0

Hi,

We have started to use the vCenter appliance now instead of the windows version. For the Windows install we used to monitor the VMware services and if the vpxd.exe service stopped it would raise an alert.

What are people in regards to monitoring the appliance to ensure its running without any issues?

Thanks.

SSO Logs filling up mount point

I'm looking for some clarification on information found in VMware KB 2143565. The instructions state to change the numeric values in the following lines:

log4j.appender.LOGFILE.MaxFileSize

log4j.appender.LOGFILE.MaxBackupIndex

log4j.appender.PERFLOG.MaxBackupIndex

However, these lines are not present in the 'log4j.properties' file on this VCSA, version 6.0.0.30100.

The mount point is 10 GB in size and 100% utilized

Any assistance or suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Maintenance mode will not do vmotion (HA enabled cluster)

Hi

I have a cluster that consist of 6 hosts where manual vmotion works fine, but when I put my hosts in Maintenance mode, it just doesn't vmotion the vm's to the other hosts in the cluster. This problem started after we had some major network problems and every host have been rebooted after the network problem was solved. I've done vmkping and looked in different logs without finding any clues. Any idea on how to fix this (so that I can update to Update 2 without putting to much manual work into it)?

VCSA 6.5 - Update Manager acting a bit odd

$

Hello.

I have upgrade to VCSA 6.5 and I'm using it's Update Manager to try and "Scan for Updates" and checkmark in Upgrades. I have attached the baseline a Cluster level.

When doing so for an already upgraded Host I get the error: Cannot deplay upgrade agent on Host.

When doing so for a not yet upgraded Host I get the error: VMware vSphere Update Manager has an unknown error. Check the network connectivity and logs fiies for details.

The list shows 2 Compliant, 3 Non-Compliant and 3 Unknown.

One of our Hosts are Out Cold and awaiting a systemboard change. NSX is installed but only for use for Guest Introspection and McAfee MOVE AV. Both show Installation Status Failed. The one Host is probably the problem there.

If I de-attached the baseline from Cluster level and attach it to a yet to be upgrade Host I get "VMware vSphere Update Manager has an unknown error. Check the network connectivity and logs fiies for details."

Scan entity stops at 17%, I see no errors in Event Console

Repeat this for the upgraded server I get: "Cannot deploy host upgrade agent. Check the network connectivity and logs of host agent and vpxa for details." Scan Entity stops after two seconds.

Any ideas?

Best Regards

Peter
