vCenter Server Appliance checking for update hangs

$

Hey all,

I just wanted to update a vCSA appliance. Unfortunately it hangs in the status "Checking for aivailable updates..." as has no internet access.

I changed the settings to CD-ROM  updates, mounted the update-repo iso and restarted the appliance, but no luck, it's still in the checking for updates mode.

Anyone has an idea how to stop this process? As the check and install update buttons are disabled during the update search.

Thanks

Tim

migrate storage fails with 'cannot connect to host'

I'm trying to migrate the storage of a virtual machine to a different datastore. (on the same san)

When I start the job I see the task :

Relocating virtual machine / Status 'In Progress'

After 10 minutes I get 2 popups :

-

Error

-

Cannot connect to host.

-

OK

-

I tried to move the storage from a different virtual machine, but I got the same error.

Also tried from a different vmhost (but same cluster) but also the same error.

When trying from a host in a different cluster It works without problems (same san/datastore used in the cluster where I got the errors)

There are no difference in the security profile on the hosts.

Any hints ?

Attached logfile (vpxd-353.log) when I was running the migrate storage.

VM shows alert icon with no alarms triggered

I have been having phantom alarms lately. Virtual machines will show the red alert icon with no alarms triggered. I checked the VM, the host, the cluster, the folder, the datacenter, and vcenter but none of those objects have any triggered alarms either. The cluster does not have HA or DRS enabled.

I had several VMs in this condition so I restarted vCenter server, which usually solves the problem for a while. However, this time two of the VMs have retained their alert state through the vCenter server restart.

I ran this powercli script on the trouble VMs and every alarm state was either gray or green. How can I find out what is causing the VMs to red exclamation point alert symbol?

$vm = Get-VM -Name VM | Get-View
foreach($state in $vm.DeclaredAlarmState){
    $alarm = Get-View $state.Alarm
    Write-Host "name:"
    Write-Host $alarm.info.name
    Write-Host "overall status:"
    Write-Host $state.OverallStatus
}

I can restart the vCenter Server service fine after that.  It seems like its trying to write to the DB, fails, then it stops.  I have the DB running on an external SQl 2008 server.  The VIM_VCDB db is approx 9.5 GB, which seems very large to me. Ive set the Database Retention Policy to 90 days. I took a full backup of the DB and tried to shrink it 4-5 times but it doesnt every really shrink.  I did do the log files as well and that shrunk a lot.

Any thoughts on this?  Nothing really changed and this started happening this week.

Thanks-

VCSA 6.5 to 6.7 Upgrade pre-check warning

I have two embedded VCSA appliances in embedded linked mode.  They are 6.5 U3a.  I'm trying to upgrade them to 6.7.  I'm using the 6.7 ISO 15132721 build.  On both of them I get

warning - Unable to retrieve replication status of the partners

resolution - Make sure vmdir service is reachable and started in partner nodes and this node before continuing

I've checked, and the vmdir service is running on both of them.  ./vdcrepadmin -f showpartnerstatus indicates Partner is 0 changes behind on both.  I've restarted both VCSAs.  I've not opened a support ticket on this yet

vCenter Server 6.7 update3 FQDN/PNID change feature

Anyone tried the new feature that finally allows changing the FQDN of a vCenter Server? I cannot make it work, it just fails with the following error:

pnid_change.log:

2019-09-08 11:38:39,050 - pnid_utils-update_task_status():1186 - INFO - Task : Failed to create replication placeholder.

The environment is pretty simple and meets the feature's requirements. I just don't know what to look at, so any ideas are appreciated.

The full pnid_change.log is attached (the real FQDN which has proper dns records is replaced with "test.local").

Hello.

We are thinking about to upgrade our vSphere environment to the following version mix (from VMware site OK?!):

ESXi     5.5U3 (Upgrade to 6.5 is not possible due Storage)

vCSA     6.5

Does anybody have experience with this mix in an production environment?

Thanks.

Installation of component VCSServiceManager failed for vCenter 6.0

Hi experts,

I tried to install vCenter 6.0, and got the following error:

  • Installation of component VCSServiceManager failed with error code '1603'. Check the logs for more details.

Checked the release notes, ipv4 stack is all fine.

I tried a couple of times, couldn't overcome this. Also tried to upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0, failed with the same error.

How can I overcome this?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Forget to mention: I am installing this on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

vCenter 6.0u3h - client integration plugin installation failed

Hello,

after upgrade of vCenter from 6.0u3d to 6.0u3h (Windows 2012 R2 server), the old client integration plugin no longer works. So I downloaded a new installation file from the web client authentication page, but the installation fails with error:

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

The installer is now divided into two components, run in a sequence: an actual client integration plugin installer (which seems to be installed successfully) and VMware Plug-in Service installer (producing the error). I found a similar problem description regarding an older version of the client ( VMware Client Integration Plugin 6.0 install failed - solution  ), but the workarounds mentioned there did'n help in my case.

Without the integration plugin I am not able to transfer files from and to NFS shares, so it's quite urgent.

Thanks in advance,

David

vmware-vpxd service cannot start after importing Machine SSL certificate

Hi people,

I have implemented vCenter Server 6 WEB appliance and tried to import self signed SSL Machine certificate, in order to access on vCenter web interface using that certificate for HTTPS. Certificate was signed by Windows Server 2008 CA with template configured using these instrustions: Creating a Microsoft Certificate Authority Template for SSL certificate creation in vSphere 6.0 (2112009) | VMware KB. Also, I tried to import Comodo Trial Positive SSL certificate with same issue - couldn't import it.

I used the VMCA script for certificate management and also tried to import them manually using this procedure: vSphere 6.0 Documentation Center. In both cases, process crashed during vmware-vpxd service restarting process. VMCA script exited with rolling-back old certificates. After trying to manual replace certificates using commands certool and vecs-cli, I tried to start vmware-vpxd service using command service vmware-vpxd start. It produced following output:
