I'm trying to get into the web client after a fresh install of vCenter Server 5.5. When I go to the url of http://vcenterservername/ it brings me to the page to log into vSphere Web Client. When I click on the link, it takes me to a page that says "In order for this direct link to work, you must first log in to the vSphere Web Client at least once from http://{webclient-host}:{webclient-https-port}. That sounds simple enough, however when I go to that, I get a cert warning. I click "continue to this website", and I get an HTTP Status 404- page that says "The requested resource is not available." I have found several articles that state try going to http://vcenterservername:default port/vsphere-client which that doesn't work either. I am trying this from the local vCenter server itself. Any suggestions?
Web client not working after Simple Install option for vCenter Server 5.5
Unable to start the vCenter / Management Web Services
Hi All,
I recently moved our vCenter installation to another server "vCenterServer" from the original server "Win12-ban", I have left the database on "Win12-ban" and created a DSN on "vCenterServer" which tests successfully when connecting into the database from the "vCenterServer" database. When I originally set this all up it worked a dream, I was originally using my own domain account to start the service (rather than the local system account), but now none of these accounts will start the service. I really want to be using the local account as I want to be able to see performance stats within vcenter.
The error message I get when trying to start the service is:
Followed by this in the event viewer:

Error getting configuration info from the database
I have tested the DSN from the machine with vCenter installed and it tests successfully, which suggests there is a connection from the vCenter Server to the database, has anyone encountered similar issues?
Distributed switch problem
I am configuring a new VMkernel distributed switch and trying to add a new vMotion virtual adapter. I input the correct IP address information and received the error -
“Call "HostNetworkSystem.AddVirtualNic" for object "networkSystem-99" on vCenter Server "" failed.
Operation failed, diagnostics report: A vmkernel nic for the connection point already exists:”.
I have tried all sorts of things but it will not add the VMkernel IP. I would be very grateful if anyone has any ideas.
Why does template customization make the NIC disconnected??
I've been testing template customization with a Win2k3 Enterprise 'gold' template.
Every time I deploy from this template, the newly created VM does not have its NIC set to connect at power on.
How do I fix this??
It does not seem to matter which kind of NIC -- flexible or enhanced vmxnet.
Having to reset the settings every time sort of ruins the whole idea of templates deployment.
VC 2.5 u4 and ESX 3.5 u3 -- VIC running on Vista...initial testing seemed to work, but today the NICs won't connect...
Thank you, Tom
ESXi host shows "not responding" in vSphere web console after 60-90 seconds following disconnect/reconnect
I'm not sure where to go next with this, hoping someone can offer advice...
This is a fresh install of vCenter 5.5 and an existing ESXi 5.5 server. I see my ESXi host and all details in the web console, but it shows up as "not responding". I can successfully disconnect/reconnect but every time, 60-90 seconds after successful reconnect it goes back to "not responding".
FYI:
- vSphere installable console connects and stays connected to ESXi host without issue 100% of the time, even while testing web console and having above issue.
- I'm certain the network connection between my vCenter server and ESXi host is fine.
- I've checked through all the tests/checks in VMware KB: Diagnosing an ESXi/ESX host that is disconnected or not responding in vCenter Server. Everything checks and tests out fine.
Is there anything else I can test or do to isolate what could be causing this? I'm happy to provide any needed additional details.
vCenter Server Appliance update and VMware Tools
I've just updated VCSA to 5.1.0.10000 Build 1065184. I had to uninstall VMware Tools first 'cause update failed with
"VMware Tools cannot install because it appears that another installation of
VMware Tools is already present. Please remove the previous installation and
then attempt to install this copy of VMware Tools again."
error in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/updatecli.log (I had similar problem with previous update).
After update I can see in this log:
"22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Running /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_reconfigure_tools
VMware tools is not installed on this VM.
22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Update status: Done VMware tools reconfiguration"
Should I install VMware Tools via vSphere Web Client again? I supposed VMware Tools to be installed by VCSA update. I can see packages anyway:

Event ID 7024 - The VMware VirtualCenter Server service terminated with service-specific error 2 (0x2) upon starting up VC Server
I am currently running VC 2.5 virtualized. WIndows 2003 SP2 with SQL Express 2005. Everytime I reboot the server I received Event ID 7024 - The VMware VirtualCenter Server service terminated with service-specific error 2 (0x2). Eventually I am able to manually start the service and everything is fine. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Web Client throws Error #2032 when accessed through any sort of reverse proxy / SSL VPN
I've been trying to publish the Web Client through our SSL VPN which has a nice workspace to publish web links.
Unfortunately, something in the vSphere web client breaks very badly if you do not connect directly to the application - it loads the background image but instead of displaying the login dialog it simply bombs out with an "Error #2032" message.
Anyone found a fix for this?
vCenter appliance 5 and SMTP Configuration
hi guys
I setup the
SMTP Server IP
and
Sender Account in my new and shiny vCenter Appliance 5 server
SMTP Server: 192.168.1.x
Sender account: vcenter@mycompany.net
now testing for the email alerts I get that my email server gets or receives email from the root account from my vCenter app lie this
root@servername.mycompany.net
so this is not valid and my email server won't relay this email
any idea if there is a issue for vCenter appliance since is linux having issues sending emails?
thanks a lot

An error occurred while communicating with the remote host
Hi community,
I have a problem with my VC2.5 and ESX3.5.
50% of all actions results in "An error occurred while communicating with the remote host". The 2nd try mostly works, sometimes i have to do another try.
I start an action, the host disconnects and a few seconds later the host is back and i can give it another try. The error occures on every host i have.
Can anyone help me, please?
TIA,
Sascha
vCenter 5.5 Appliance - Cannot see any AD users/groups after setting up SSO
I am playing around with the vCenter 5.5 appliance (investigating whether it is feasible to move to the appliance from Windows hosted vCenter). We are currently running vCenter 5.0, so I have no experience with SSO until now. I successfully joined the vCenter appliance to AD (I can see the object in AD) and then I added our domain as a SSO source in vCenter. I made sure to use a FQDN host name for the appliance as I saw a few issues with joining the domain if the host name was not in FQDN format. When I configured SSO, I used "Active Directory (Integrated Windows Authentication)" and then "Use machine account" - which from what I understand, all that is needed is that I joint the appliance to the domain - which, as I stated, appears to be successfully joined to our domain. When I added the domain to SSO, there were no errors and I see it in the list now. Thus as far as I can tell, the setup for SSO was completely error free.
However, when I try to add resources from AD to vCenter (for example to add AD users/groups to the vCenter administrators group or to assign role permissions to objects in vCenter) the browse window for our domain just hangs, In the web interface I see a little blue progress bar spinning for ever, and in the vSphere Windows GUI client, the browse window just hangs and I have to kill the process.
Did I miss some critical step in SSO setup for AD? Am I not supposed to use "machine account"?
Any help is appreciated.

VCSA 5.5 U1 very slow?
I updates a ESXi server to 5.5 U1 yesterday and also updated the VCSA to 5.5 U1. Since then, when connected to the VCSA using the Vsphere Client, browsing any object is very slow. CPU usage for the VCSA goes to 100%. I already rebooted all, this made no change. Any idea what might be going on?
VCSA Coredumps 100%
I had an issue this morning on vCenter server appliance where the coredumps were at 100%, which was causing sluggishness in VCSA. I deleted the coredump files via SSH command line, but is there anyway to configure this so that the coredumps never take up 100% disk space again?
We are using vCenter 5.5 appliance.

vCenter Server Appliance checking for update hangs
Hey all,
I just wanted to update a vCSA appliance. Unfortunately it hangs in the status "Checking for aivailable updates..." as has no internet access.
I changed the settings to CD-ROM updates, mounted the update-repo iso and restarted the appliance, but no luck, it's still in the checking for updates mode.
Anyone has an idea how to stop this process? As the check and install update buttons are disabled during the update search.
Thanks
Tim

Host Profiles playing up in vSphere 5
Hi all,
Ive recently upgraded about 200 hosts to ESXi 5 from ESX 4.1 and 2 vcenters 5 also.
Ive noticed a problem with host profiles when it comes to storage, and wanted to see if anyone else has come across it.
Basically its only happening on the HP BL620 G7 but the older HP BL680 G5's are unaffected.
When creating a profile from an existing host, That host it is created off obviously is compliant, but all the rest come back with saying that the local disk naa that was in the host it was created from is missing.. this only happens on the G7's might have something to do with a newer controller in the hosts?
Ok thats ok i edited the profile and removed that naa from the check but then the hosts are coming back with
Host state doesnt match specification: device (naa of local storage for that host) needs to be reset
Host state doesnt match specification: device (naa of local storage for that host) Path Selection Policy needs to be set to default for claiming SATP
Looking at the profile the default for VMW_SATP_LOCAL is fixed which is what the disk is set at.
Any one seen this? I have removed something from the check but seams to make things worse, I dont mind at the moment because I know the hosts are compliant I would like a big green tick instead of a big red cross
Cheers
