vCenter 5 Web Client Service does not start

$

0

After the installation of the Web Client Server on the vCenter Server (with no errors) the Web Client Service won't start.

In the windows log following error is reported

The vSphere Web Client service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function.....

Event ID 7024

EventRecord ID 2655

The Server is a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Server with vCenter 5.0

Any Ideas why the Web Client Service does not start?

Thanks

Single Sign on Permissions in vCenter

Is there any reason why the single sign-on account administrator@vsphere.local should have permissions in vCenter if the rest of my vCenter permissions are given to active directory groups instead of single sign-on users?

vCenter 5.5 in linked mode & SSO

$

I'm planning to upgrade my two vSphere environments from vCenter 5.0 to vCenter 5.5 currently running in linked mode which are in two different geographical location .

Even after the upgrade I plan on to keep them in Linked mode, question is can I keep two separate basic SSO's for my both vCenter instances or it HAS to be Primary SSO in one geographical location  & additional SSO instance in other geographical location given that I want my vCenter servers to be in linked mode?

Can I put only one SSO instance to be in use if it's linked mode ? Or can I keep two separate SSO instances for both locations & have the authentication via local SSO servers?

Other Question Scenario:-

Geographical Location A

vCenter Server A

Primary SSO

Local Domain Controller A

Web Client A

Geographical Location B

vCenter Server B

Secondary Mutilsite SSO

Local Domain Controller B

Web Client B

If I log into vCenter B how my authentication will flow ?

Will it go via WebClient B -> Primary SSO in location A -> Domain Controller A -> vCenter Server B ?

If so wouldn't that cause latency issues while logging in ?

vCenter 5.1 delay when opening vm console

$

Last week we updated our vCenter Server from 5.0 to 5.1. And since that moment we experience some delay while opening vm console windows.

We used to have a black screen for about 1 or maybe 2 seconds before we got to see our vm console screen.

But now we have to watch a black screen  9 to 10 seconds before we get to see our vm console.

Has anyone got any ideas what i can do to speed up this process?

One weird thing i noticed.

In the vCenter database we used to have the following tables.

VPX_HIST_STAT1

VPX_HIST_STAT2

VPX_HIST_STAT3

VPX_HIST_STAT4

But now i see these tables are not here anymore, instead i see a lot of new tables.

VPX_HIST_STAT1_1

VPX_HIST_STAT1_2

VPX_HIST_STAT1_3

etc.

and also

VPX_HIST_STAT2_1...

VPX_HIST_STAT3_1...

VPX_HIST_STAT4_1...

etc

I have no idea if this have something to do with each other, but i can't check the fragmentation of the performance history anymore.

use vCenter5
go
dbcc showcontig (VPX_HIST_STAT1)
go

Gives error: Msg 5239, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Unable to process object ID 2102298549 (object 'VPX_HIST_STAT1') because this DBCC command does not support objects of this type.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

vCenter Server Linked Mode or not?

Hi,

i have got the following scenario: I have an existing Esx Environment with 8 physical ESX hosts and 1 virtualized vCenter server for the entire Management and 1 Cluster. Now (for Oracle licensing costs) my company advised me to create a second Esx Cluster with 4 physical ESX hosts.

My question is related to the vCenter for the Management of the two Clusters. It's best practice to install a second vCenter Server for the Oracle VM Cluster and link the two vCenter servers together (Linked Mode) or to let them operate separate or to only use 1 vCenter Server for the managament of the 2 Clusters?

What in your opinion are the PROS and CONS?

thanks!

Esxi 5: Hardware monitoring service on this host is not responding or not available

Hello,

Sometimes we have the phenomenon that when we open the Hardware Status Tab we can not see any information.

In return I only get the following message:

HardwareStatus.jpg

Hardware monitoring service on this host is not responding or not available

(Also the "Update"-function doesn't effect anything)

Funnily enough, it could be that in 30 minutes it will work fine.

Has anyone an idea what I can check / proof to solve this problem?

I seem to successfully join my vcenter 5.5 server to my domain but for some reason I am not successful in adding domain users to the vcenter server.  i'm attaching a screen shot where I try to add users but it doesn't seem to see my domain in the list?  maybe i'm looking in the wrong place?  tips/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

vCenter Server Service Wont Start after P2V

Hello community.

Have an issue I have not been able to resolve and looking for assistance.

Problem:

vCenter Server Service wont start after the Windows Server was P2V'd.  Getting an ERROR 2 from the Service.  Getting Windows System Event Log Error 7024.

History:

The client I am currently working with is trying to break up its DEV Location's VCENTER.  Now DEV Location vcenter runs everything for that site (domains, dns, and all developement servers).  So its that location's PRODUCTION VCENTER.  Currently the SQL Server (dedicated to vCenter), VCENTER and SSO are all sitting on the same box.  We are going to break up the SSO, SQL and VCENTER into their own servers.  However the client wants to re-use the current physical server for the SQL Server.  So I need to P2V the existing physical server before I can begin the new environment.

I have been able to get all the services working on the Virtual vCenter (SQL, SSO, Update Manager etc etc) but have been unable to get the actual vCenter Server Service to work.  Fails everytime with ERROR 2 Code.  I have been unable to get a KB article from VMWARE that fits the issue that I am having.  ERROR 2 code has many articles and none have worked.

Details:

vCenter 5.1 Build 799731

SQL 2008 R2

Windows 2008 R2

When the vCenter Service tries to start it will stop at the 50% mark and give this error: (I have removed names for security reasons)

Windows could not start the VMware VirtualCenter Server on <name of server>. For more information, review the System Event Log.  If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 2

When I review the Windows Event System Log I get this error:

EVENTID: 7024

The VMware VirtualCenter Server service terminated with service-specific error The system cannot find the file specified..

When I review the vpxd log file I see this at the end of the log: (I have removed names for security reasons)

2013-12-03T16:09:17.353-05:00 [09168 info 'Default'] Forcing shutdown of VMware VirtualCenter now

I have pulled the VM into a lab and removed all network based issues that would occur from isolating it.  Now the VCENTER is yelling about that it cant find any of its hosts in the vdxp log but that shouldn't matter.  All the Services have been changed to Local Accounts.  All Network and ODBC settings are able to see the server.. aka the server can see itself.  I have not removed any software or drivers from the VM (techincal this is my third P2V of the same server for testing reasons).. And still the only thing that wont start is VCENTER SERVER... SSO is started, SQL is started..

Also everything has been left the same on the VM (DNS, IP, NAME etc etc). Shutting down the physical and booting it back up does not show any issues.  Only when its been P2V'd does this come up.

I just cant get this issue.  Need help.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

BostonTechGuy

Newly deployed vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 failed to authenticate against AD on Windows 2008 R2

I deployed a whole new VCSA 5.5 to test its new feature. System joined AD successfully, and I can see and add users into data center using Web client. But if I want to login as AD user, Web Client always tells me "invalid credentials". Setting my AD domain as default domain does not work.

SSH into vcsa and examine SSO log in vmware-sts-idmd.log, it tells me:

Hi community,

I have a problem with my VC2.5 and ESX3.5.

50% of all actions results in "An error occurred while communicating with the remote host". The 2nd try mostly works, sometimes i have to do another try.

I start an action, the host disconnects and a few seconds later the host is back and i can give it another try. The error occures on every host i have.

Can anyone help me, please?

TIA,

Sascha

vCenter Server Appliance update and VMware Tools

$

I've just updated VCSA to 5.1.0.10000 Build 1065184. I had to uninstall VMware Tools first 'cause update failed with

"VMware Tools cannot install because it appears that another installation of

VMware Tools is already present. Please remove the previous installation and

then attempt to install this copy of VMware Tools again."

error in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/updatecli.log (I had similar problem with previous update).

After update I can see in this log:

"22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Running /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_reconfigure_tools

VMware tools is not installed on this VM.

22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Update status: Done VMware tools reconfiguration"

Should I install VMware Tools via vSphere Web Client again? I supposed VMware Tools to be installed by VCSA update. I can see packages anyway:

vCenter Server Appliance checking for update hangs

Hey all,

I just wanted to update a vCSA appliance. Unfortunately it hangs in the status "Checking for aivailable updates..." as has no internet access.

I changed the settings to CD-ROM  updates, mounted the update-repo iso and restarted the appliance, but no luck, it's still in the checking for updates mode.

Anyone has an idea how to stop this process? As the check and install update buttons are disabled during the update search.

Thanks

Tim

Trying to run Dell's dpack by connecting to our vcenter server.

I add our vcenter URL and after trying to connect I receive:

"Failed to connect with the VMware VCenter Server 'https://vcenter/sdk/vimService' "

Turned off windows firewall, checked the SDK URL (VirtualCenter.VimApiUrl) in vcenter settings.  Not sure what else to check.

Ideas? thanks

Internet Explorer 11 and vCenter 5.5 web client

I am testing in preparation to upgrade vSphere from 5.0 to 5.5. One thing I have noticed is the web client seems to have a problem with IE 11. I get this message in a bar at the top of the browser:

This browser is not supported. Some features might not work correctly. A minimum of IE7, Firefox 9 or Chrome 14 are required on Windows. A minimum of Firefox 9 or Chrome 14 are required on Linux. A minimum of  Firefox 9, Chrome 14 or Safari 5.1.3 are required on Mac OS X. Read the vSphere Web Client help for details.

Is there a fix for this? It seems safe to ignore this message, everything seems to work ok, but I don't really want to field all the questions about this message when 5.5 is deployed.

Thanks

Matt

High memory usage on server - java.exe and tomcat.exe

Hello I have vCenter Server, vSphere Client, vSphere update manager, and vSphere web client installed on my server.

I see that there are 3 java.exe processes taking up 2.3GB (all together), and tomcat6.exe taking up 750mb.

One Java process is taking up 1.2GB of ram.

Another Java process is taking up 570 MB of ram.

Another Java process is taking up 470 MB of ram.

So all together they are taking up 3gb of memory on this server.  Is this normal?

Or is there a way to get these processes down on RAM usage?

vcenter 5.5 service fails

Hi all,

since a couple of days our vcenter is reporting the following event:

The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

An unrecoverable problem has occurred, stopping the VMware VirtualCenter service. Error: Error[VdbODBCError] (-1) "ODBC error: (40001) - [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Transaction (Process ID 88) was deadlocked on lock | communication buffer resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction." is returned when executing SQL statement "SELECT MO_ID, MO_TYPE, TYPE_ID, ARRAY_ID, VALUE FROM VPX_TEXT_ARRAY WHERE MO_TYPE = ? AND MO_ID = ?"

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

If i reboot the vcenter server all the services are starting normally also the vcenter server service, and after a x period of time, the service crashes and give us above error message. And we are unable to connect with the client

Web client not working after Simple Install option for vCenter Server 5.5

I'm trying to get into the web client after a fresh install of vCenter Server 5.5. When I go to the url of http://vcenterservername/ it brings me to the page to log into vSphere Web Client. When I click on the link, it takes me to a page that says "In order for this direct link to work, you must first log in to the vSphere Web Client at least once from http://{webclient-host}:{webclient-https-port}. That sounds simple enough, however when I go to that, I get a cert warning. I click "continue to this website", and I get an HTTP Status 404- page that says "The requested resource is not available." I have found several articles that state try going to http://vcenterservername:default port/vsphere-client which that doesn't work either. I am trying this from the local vCenter server itself. Any suggestions?

Unable to monitor database storage usage

Hello,

I just updated vCenter Server from 5.5U1 to 5.5U2b. In "Service Health" there is new warning message:

"Unable to monitor database storage usage. Refer to VMware KB 2078305 for details."

I am using MS SQL 2008 R2 SP1 Express, which is supported by this version of vCenter. There is also plenty of free space on the server disk (63 GB free). KB 2078305 does not explain this particular warning message and the retention policy for task and events data is also set.

So what should be the problem ? What are the conditions to trigger this warning ?

Thanks,

  David

Hi all;
I get an error such as the appendix on vSphere Server. I ran into this error expanding the datastore. But on the virtual machines running normally comes at a time of error. Do not have a specific time. Can you help on this topic?

vCenter 5.5 Appliance - Cannot see any AD users/groups after setting up SSO

$

I am playing around with the vCenter 5.5 appliance (investigating whether it is feasible to move to the appliance from Windows hosted vCenter).  We are currently running vCenter 5.0, so I have no experience with SSO until now.  I successfully joined the vCenter appliance to AD (I can see the object in AD) and then I added our domain as a SSO source in vCenter.  I made sure to use a FQDN host name for the appliance as I saw a few issues with joining the domain if the host name was not in FQDN format.  When I configured SSO, I used "Active Directory (Integrated Windows Authentication)" and then "Use machine account" - which from what I understand, all that is needed is that I joint the appliance to the domain - which, as I stated, appears to be successfully joined to our domain.  When I added the domain to SSO, there were no errors and I see it in the list now.  Thus as far as I can tell, the setup for SSO was completely error free.

However, when I try to add resources from AD to vCenter (for example to add AD users/groups to the vCenter administrators group or to assign role permissions to objects in vCenter) the browse window for our domain just hangs,  In the web interface I see a little blue progress bar spinning for ever, and in the vSphere Windows GUI client, the browse window just hangs and I have to kill the process.

Did I miss some critical step in SSO setup for AD?  Am I not supposed to use "machine account"?

Any help is appreciated.
