Hi,

I want to add the HP Online depot as a download source to the Update Manager. The URL http://vibsdepot.hp.com/index.xml gets validated, but no HP updates get downloaded after hitting "apply" and "download now".

Am I missing something?

After the installation of the Web Client Server on the vCenter Server (with no errors) the Web Client Service won't start.

In the windows log following error is reported

The vSphere Web Client service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function.....

Event ID 7024

EventRecord ID 2655

The Server is a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Server with vCenter 5.0

Any Ideas why the Web Client Service does not start?

Thanks

Ports 902 and 905

I've been capturing Virtual Infrastructure Client <> VirtualCenter Server <> ESX Server <--> Virtual Infrastructure Client network traffic lately to monitor the use of port 905 and I'm not seeing that port 905 is being used any longer for VirtualCenter or VIC communication of any sort.  Port 902 seems to be used throughout, with the general exception of license server and Tomcat traffic.

In the VirtualCenter 1.x days, both ports 902 and 905 were used.  One port was used exclusively for VC Client communication to VC Server, and the other port was used for VC Server communication to ESX Server.  Port 902 was also used soley for VMware Remote Console connectivity to the ESX server.

The reason why I was checking is because I've read some conflicting VI3 documentation on which ports are used, so I wanted to find out to be sure.

What do you know to be true?

How do you move a VM running vCenter from one ESXi host to another?

How do you move a VM running vCenter from one ESXi host to another?

I am running VMware vSphere 4.1 Essentials with a vCenter VM running on one of the ESXi hosts that I want to move to the other ESXi host. Both ESXi servers have direct attached storage, so the VM has to be moved from one datastore to another without vMotion. And, the migration function is not available for a powered on vCenter VM in the VMware Essentials version.
Can I use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to move the vCenter VM to the new ESXi host? Will the move be recognized and updated by vCenter
when the vCenter VM is rebooted?
Any suggestions on how this can be done would be helpful.

vCenter 5.1 and AD authentication issues

$

Hello,

A little bit of intro:

1. VC5.1, SSO, Inventory and Web Client installed on a single VM (clean installation).

2. MS SQL is installed as a separate VM

3. During installation of SSO an AD connector was successfully created

4. During VC installation "DOMAIN\VM Admins" group was assigned as a "admin" group.

5. "DOMAIN\VM Admins" group is listed as assigned "Administrator" privileges for "This object and its children" in VCenter -> Host & Clusters > Manage

> Permissions.

6. AD account which is a part of "DOMAIN\VM Admins" can successfully login to Web client and to GUI client

2 problem scenarios:

1. a) create a simple user,

    b) add it to "DOMAIN\VM Admins"

=> user CAN login to web client ONCE. After logout any consecutive tries give "Provided credentials are not valid." error

2. a) create a simple user

    b) add it as "Administrator" on the same level as "DOMAIN\VM Admins" group is assigned to.

=> Any login attempt gives "Provided credentials are not valid." error

Looks like SSO/Inventory service issue, but fiddling with SSO access administration (adding users to LSAdministrators, __Administrators__ etc groups) doesn't seem to provide any relief.

Any help/suggestion is appreciated.

Hi community,

I have a problem with my VC2.5 and ESX3.5.

50% of all actions results in "An error occurred while communicating with the remote host". The 2nd try mostly works, sometimes i have to do another try.

I start an action, the host disconnects and a few seconds later the host is back and i can give it another try. The error occures on every host i have.

Can anyone help me, please?

TIA,

High memory usage on server - java.exe and tomcat.exe

Hello I have vCenter Server, vSphere Client, vSphere update manager, and vSphere web client installed on my server.

I see that there are 3 java.exe processes taking up 2.3GB (all together), and tomcat6.exe taking up 750mb.

One Java process is taking up 1.2GB of ram.

Another Java process is taking up 570 MB of ram.

Another Java process is taking up 470 MB of ram.

So all together they are taking up 3gb of memory on this server.  Is this normal?

Or is there a way to get these processes down on RAM usage?

File Transfer using vSphere

We have a VM that has been compromised with some malware and is now sitting with it's NIC cards disabled to cut it off from the network.  We would like to get some log files off of it for analysis.  Short of putting a USB key into the host itself, is there a way to use vSphere client to transfer files to a different location?

Thanks for the help!

VmWare VCenter Server service won't start

Earlier this week, we experienced some issues with our Vcenter that required us to reload our server from an image. Now that the server is back up and functioning, the VCenter Server Service and the Vcenter Management Webserver service both will not start.

I get the following error.

The VMware VirtualCenter Server service terminated with service-specific error 2 (0x2) upon starting up VC Server

If anyone can provide me with assistance as to why this is happening I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

login credential issue on vcenter 5.1

$

Hey guys,

Recently I upgraded my vcenter server from 4.1 to 5.1.  Orginally (4.1 version ) I use my AD account to login without the domain name prefix, just like username and then password.

But in vcenter 5.1 I can no longer use that in simple way, seems it must use the domain\username such of type.

Does anyone have some experience on it?  Any idea to change back ?

Thanks.

vCenter Server is unable to find a Master vSphere HA Agent -- upgrade to vCenter 5.0

Hi all,

Upgrading to vCenter 5.0.   Have 6 ESXi 4.1 hosts in a Cluster.  I try to activate HA and get the following messages:

vCenter Server is unable to find a Master vSphere HA Agent in cluster XXX Cluster in XXX Datacenter

Insufficient resources to satisfy vSphere HA failover level on cluster XXX Cluster in XXX Datacenter

Anyone have any ideas what is going on and how to fix?

  Thanks!

VCenter start fails after demoting Domain Controller

Hi.

Instead of hijacking other one's thread having the same problem I decided to start a new thread, so sorry for double posting.

After promoting a new DC and demoting the old one we have the problem that VCenter 5.1a no longer starts.

Taking a look at the imsTrace.log file of SSOServer we see the following line:

Caused by: javax.resource.spi.ResourceAdapterInternalException: Unable to create managed connection olddc.ourdomain.com:3268

As we can see SSO still tries to contact the old dc now beeing a simple member server instead of the new one - the question is why?

We checked health of AD by running DCDIAG and BPA both not seeing any problems. Additionally we checked DNS by hand to ensure that no SRV or any other records are present which reference the old DC. Also all other AD dependent services like Exchange, SharePoint, DFS run without issue and do not indicate any problems.

We also found the krb5.conf file of SSO which still references the old DC by the following entry:

[realms]
OURDOMAIN.COM = {
    kdc = olddc.ourdomain.com
    default_domain = OURDOMAIN.COM
}

However changing that entry does not solve the problem because after a short period this entry is replaced automagically by ??? - that's the question.

Mybe someon else has some ideas what to check next.

Cheers.

VCSA 5.1 U1a stops on regenerating certificate

Hello guys,

Yeasterday I deployed new VCSA and moved existing ESX servers to it. Then I shut down old vCenter and changed IP and hostname of new VCSA to IP/hostname that was previously set on old vCenter.

After restart, there is usual problem with incorrect certificate, so I checked "Toggle certificate setting" in VCSA administration on https port 5480. After reboot system stays on:

Hostname or IP has changed. Regenerating the self-signed certificates.

Starting VMware vPostgres: ok

Waiting for the embedded database to start up: .[OK]

SSH and web UI does not work, but system is not frozen. I can access Alt-F10 virtual console that shows only NIC link status.

Failsafe mode also does not work, only solution is to revert to snapshot.

I tried to deploy same VCSA in our testing vSphere infrastructure and tried to do exactly same configuration - same problem.

Any ideas will be welcome

Regards,

Rudolf

When running VI Client 4 or 4 U1, on Vista SP1 x64, I get the following error message.

The type initializer for threw an exception for 'VirtualInfrastructure.Utils.ClientsXml' threw an exception.

and the VI Client exists.

Any ideas, I've found similiar with users running on Windows 7, I've followed those treads, but it still gives me the error message, VI Client used to work, but has stopped.

vCenter Inventory Service does not start

Hi,

I have installed vCenter Server 5.0 U1 on Windows Server 2008 R2 that have all updates. When the part of the vCenter Inventory installation, it creates vCenter Inventory Service but it cannot start it (it tries to start it two times with no success), then it finishes the installation with success.

When I tried to start it manually, It gives an error (screenshot is attached). If I check ds.log I see some errors in ds.log file (error log is attached).

I cannot find the error that I see in ds.log on forums and knowledge bases. I see similar errors regarding SSL issue, but I think my problem is not SSL issue since I tried all the solutions about SSL issue with no success.

Also I deleted the Inventory data folder and created it using createDB.bat and registered it again using register.bat. But nothing changed.

What can be the source of the problem and how can I start the vCenter Inventory Service successfully. I need some advice. Thanks in advance...

vCenter Server Appliance 5.1 - Wizard/Config fails

$

This is my inital step into the Vmware world and it isn't going well.

Downloaded the latest vCenter Server appliance  5.1.0.5100 and created a new VM in VMware Workstation 8.0.4.

Started the VM and let it work it's way through the install.

browse (Firefox 15.0.1) to https://10.1.5.7:5480 and I log in using root & the default password.  Get the EULA & accept.

The wizard starts.  Select the config with default settings then select Start.

During SSO I get:

Failed to execute '/usr/sbin/vpxd_servicecfg sso write embedded embedded     CENSORED  CENSORED':
VC_CFG_RESULT=702(Error: An unexpected error ocurred during the installation of the appliance SSO service. Please collect a support bundle and file a service request.)

Starting vCenter Server I get:

Failed to execute '/usr/sbin/vpxd_servicecfg sso write embedded embedded     CENSORED  CENSORED':
VC_CFG_RESULT=702(Error: An unexpected error ocurred during the installation of the appliance SSO service. Please collect a support bundle and file a service request.)
Failed to execute '/usr/sbin/vpxd_servicecfg service start':
VC_CFG_RESULT=101(Error: vCenter Server failed to start.)

I thought that a fully packaged VM with a wizard would at least give me a nearly functioning setup.

I've tried setting the hostname/static IP.  No difference

Configure database was set to embedded by the wizard.  Since this will be a small installation (2 ESXi hosts, <30 clients) that should be sufficient.

Trying to change the SSO deployment type always fails with "Error: VPXD must be stopped to perform this operation."

Configure Authentication/Configure Services don't go anywhere.

Trying a custom configuration gave the same results.

Anyone have an idea as to what I'm doing wrong?

VMware vCenter service stops with SQL DB size errors

$

Hi,

We run VMware vCenter 4.1 with 3 ESX hosts, and 50 VMs. vCenter is running on Windows 2008 R2, with SQL 2005 Express SP2.

Yesterday our virtual backup failed, saying it couldn't connect to the vCenter agent. When I looged into the issue, it appeared that the vCenter Server service had stopped. Up on further investigation it appears that the SQL Express database had reached 4GB in size, which is the limited, and this caused the vCenter service to fall over.

I've checked some forum posts, and have performed the following:

  • Set a database retention policy for tasks & events, this was originally un-checked, but I have checked it, and set it to 90 days initially, and now 30 days.
  • Found a script on the VMware forum called VCDB_table_cleanup_MSSQL_V4.X.sql which can cleanup the database. I set it to delete data older (changing SET @DELETE_DATA = 1) than 90 days, and it removed 130,000+ rows.
  • Performed a database shrink & file shrink on the data file - this only got me back 9mb?
  • Performed a database shrink & file shrink on the log file - this got back a little more, about 100mb.
  • Changed the log file size from 460mb to 1024mb, in the database properties > files settings.

However, even after all of the above, when I restart the server, or stop & start the vCenter service, the following errors are logged in the application log:
