Installing vcenter appliance is not an easy thing

Maybe it was firefox's block of flash, maybe there's a problem with the client integration plugin, but firefox keeps requesting to restart it due to the plugin being installed. Got a clean copy and then it worked, although I do get the occasional time out when opening the installation page.

I was a bit surprised I needed a dhcp server running despite providing a fixed ipaddress when installing the platform controller, but I got that installed as well. The problem I'm currently having is installing the vcenter bit, by itself. Filling in all the requested info and letting the installation run its course, I get the following results.

The installation page displays the message

vCSA 6.0 install failure - unable to connect to ESXi Server

I have the vCSA ISO extracted to local drive and am running it from Internet Explorer as Administrator mode. After allowing the plugin, I click Install.

I click Accept, then Next.

At this point, I am unable to proceed past 2. Connect to target server step.

This is the error code which I can not get past no matter what I try:

"Cannot connect to target server. Invalid FQDN or IP address."

I can enter FQDN, IP address, root or domain accounts and nothing works. I even tried connecting to a virtual ESXi 5.5 u2 server with nothing configured but IP address and root password.

I've tried from utility servers, and from my user workstation, no luck -> same error.

The ESXi hosts are not in lockdown mode or in maintenance mode. I've tried all of about 30 different IP addresses and FQDNs for the various ESXi 5.5 hosts.

The hosts do have new ECA-signed ssl certificates, and i thought this might be an issue, but the virtual ESXi server i deployed didn't work either, and that had the default VMware certs.

I've tried reinstalling the Client Integration 6.0 plugin, restarting workstation/utility servers.

I've tried Firefox and IE 11 but nothing appears to work.

I've verified that the FQDN or IP and username/password works when connecting via the vSphere Client so I know I'm not fat-fingering it into the setup wizard.

What gives? What am I missing? Has anyone experienced this problem? Is there a way to collect logs for this? I tried looking for them but also couldn't find anything.

error 26002. Setup failed to register VMware vCenter Server to VMware vCenter Inventory Service

Has anyone seen this error when upgrading vCenter Server from 5.0 to 5.1?

The install process for Single Sign On and Inventory Service appeared to complete successfully, but we see this error when we are most of the way through the vCenter Server install.

The vim-vcs-msi.log has these entries:

MSI (s) (A4:58) [17:27:07:017]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL: C:\Windows\Installer\MSID278.tmp, Entrypoint: VMRegisterWithIS
Error 26002.Setup failed to register VMware vCenter Server to VMware vCenter Inventory Service
MSI (s) (A4!54) [17:40:46:024]: Product: VMware vCenter Server -- Error 26002.Setup failed to register VMware vCenter Server to VMware vCenter Inventory Service

CustomAction VM_RegisterWithIS returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
Action ended 17:40:46: InstallExecute. Return value 3.

multiple essentials plus licenses - Quick Q

hi there,

I've been asked to setup vCenter for a company that's bought 2x essentials plus licenses (v5). The have 6 hosts so will I have to create 2x Virtual Center servers

servers? I wasn't sure if the 3 host limit was applied to the vCenter or at cluster level.

Cheers,

Huw

VM permission to allow only mounting of an iso in local datastore.

I have a set of limted users who are only given the 'power options and media' permissions to their specific VM's and nothing else.  They can get to do what they need; however, I have a need to let them edit the cd settings and mount an .iso file directly out of the local datastore on the esx host.

They also get permission denied when its set to "Client Device" and hit the button to mount their local CD.

I would prefer to mount the .iso from the 'Datastore ISO file" but it would suffice to get the "Client Device" working.

I have tried to give datatstore browse and modify device settings but they do not ungrey the browse next to the mounting of iso file.  Manual type in doesnt work either.  I still want to limit them without giving administrator access.

Issues with Deploying a VM from template

$

I am having some issue deploying a VM from template with guest customization. I have not been able to find any answers on the web.

Here is my setup:

vSphere 5.1.0

Build 1064983

1) Create a VM (WIN2K8R2) based on Windows Server 2008 R2 with Administrator password as P@ssw0rd

2) Install VMware Tools
3) Activate Windows

4) Shutdown VM (WIN2K8R2)

5) Clone VM (WIN2K8R2) to a template (WIN2K8R2T1)

6) Deploy a VM (WIN2K8R2T1S1) from template (WIN2K8R2T1) with Guest Customization Spec

7) VM (WIN2K8R2T1S1) successfully created from template (WIN2K8R2T1)

- Issue is, if i don't set "Automatically Logon as Administrator" in the Guest Customization Spec, i cannot logon to windows.

- If I set "Automatically Logon as Administrator", the VM automatically logon, but if i log-off, i cannot logon

- If I set "Automatically Logon as Administrator", the VM somehow removes the "Administrator" password. And if I go to "Edit Local Users", i get option "Set New Password" for the Administrator user. Once I set a new password, then i can use the new password to logon.

- I also see that the Windows is no longer activated.

- If i specify domain credentials in the customization spec for the VM to be joined to a domain, it does not join it.

- it looks like the guest customization is not really working?

Any idea what is going on here? I have been able to reproduce this with Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows Server 2012.

Unable to decrypt passwords in customization spec

The exact error I get when I attempt to deploy a template is "The virtualcenter server is unable to decrypt passwords stored in the customization specification."

I have found previous mention that when you uninstall VC and then reinstall it you can no longer use old customization specifications.  I have done this, but I have since DELETED all old specs.

I cannot even deploy a template with brand new customization settings (although I am assuming it saves those settings to a temp file for sysprep to use).  Have I fubarred myself completely by previously uninstalling VC server?

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

Domain Admin account lock out attempts coming from Virtual Center???

We changed our Domain Admin password a few days ago and now on our new Netcrunch monitoring platform we are being spammed by messages saying the domain Administrator account is being locked out from our Virtual Center server....

there are no scheduled tasks or services that run using this account and i cant find anywhere within the Virtual Center application that would hold these credentials.

does anyone have any ideas? :_|

vCenter 6.0 U1 - Replace machine SSL certificate, VMware Component Manager service fails to start

I have installed an external PSC (6.0 U1) and have attempted to replace the machine SSL certificate with a custom certificate from our CA

I have tried using both the certificate-manager CLI and the new GUI based replacement

Both times the certificates were accepted but when services were restarted the VMware Component Manager service hangs and fails to restart

I am using windows and not the appliance

has anyone else experienced this?

Unable to start the vCenter / Management Web Services

Hi All,

I recently moved our vCenter installation to another server "vCenterServer" from the original server "Win12-ban", I have left the database on "Win12-ban" and created a DSN on "vCenterServer" which tests successfully when connecting into the database from the "vCenterServer" database. When I originally set this all up it worked a dream, I was originally using my own domain account to start the service (rather than the local system account), but now none of these accounts will start the service. I really want to be using the local account as I want to be able to see performance stats within vcenter.

The error message I get when trying to start the service is:

screenshot1.JPG

Followed by this in the event viewer:

Log Name: Application
Source:   VMware VirtualCenter Server
Date:     06/01/2014 09:29:28
Event ID: 1000

Task Category: None

Level:    Error
Keywords: Classic
User:     N/A
Computer: vCenterServer.

The description for Event ID 1000 from source VMware VirtualCenter Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Error getting configuration info from the database

I have tested the DSN from the machine with vCenter installed and it tests successfully, which suggests there is a connection from the vCenter Server to the database, has anyone encountered similar issues?

After upgrade to VCSA 6: High cpu load after a few hours?

Hi!

I've upgraded our VCSA appliance from 5.5U2 to 6 and everything seemed to went fine but after it ran about 12 hours, the appliance began to eat up the two vCPUs almost completely, rendering the web client as well as any SOAP interfaces pretty useless:

exported.png

Diagnosing the cause is a little bit difficult for me because even the SSH daemon refuses to accept any connections during those high load periods.

Sometimes I've managed it to get a VIMtop output which was basically telling me that the "CIM health service" is taking up more than 100% cpu time. After this, I've noticed that the health stats for my HP ProLiant G5 (still using an 5.5U2/HP image) were missing when using the web client, although they are still accessible using WBEM directly on the host. Then I've simply deactivated the CIM server on that specific host ... but it didn't help.

When look at VCSA's dmesg output, there are dozens of messages like this one:

IPfilter Dropped: IN=eth OUT= MAC:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff (...) SRC=(varies) DST=255.255.255.255 LEN=68 TOS=0x00 PREC=0x00 TTL=128 ID=26090 PROTO=UDP SPT=58980 DPT=1947 LEN=48
Is this somehow related?

So my question is if anyone has an idea how to troubleshoot this issue in order to track down the root cause?

Several problems with vCenter on appliance

Hi all,

I have some problems with my vcenter. version is 6.0.0.10200

First, one service is on critical warning. the vmware syslog-service reports that /storage/log has less than 15% of free space.

Second, I can't see my esxi hosts in vsphere web client, even not with vsphere.local admin. in the normal client i can see se esxi servers.

Third, I see a warning in the vsphere client: appliance management health alarm

Fourth, alert in vCenter "VMware common logging service health alarm"

I already opened a call at vmware, but i wait already 2 weeks for a response.

Thank for any advices.

VCSA 5.5 Hostname Change Problem

Hi,

I am working on getting a new implementation of VCSA v5.5 up and running and I have the VM created and working, but I am having an issue changing the name of the server.  I am running the /opt/VMware/share/vami/vami_config_net program and setting the new name.  I then exit the program and reboot the VM and the old name comes back instead of the new name.  I have even tried setting the hostname using the Linux HOSTNAME command and it looks like it takes, but once again, as soon as I reboot the server, it reverts back to the old hostname.

Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks,

issues with Web Client permissions (vsphere 6)

Hi

I have installed vCenter Server 6.0 for a customer today, which completed fine - however  I now have issues getting permissions i vCenter Web Client - even when using the SSO administrator login.

I can manage the environment from the legacy vSphere Client, however when logging into the Web Client i get the "You do not have permission to view this object or this object does not exist". and this even goes for the SSO administrator login. I cannot add global permissions or administer roles.

see screeenshots attached.

anyone had this issue before? and maybe a solution?

Error 29102 Unable to contact

I'm trying to install VMware vCenter Server 5.5 on a windows server 2008 R2 that is a virtual machine inside VMworkstation and I keep getting the error

"Unable to contact Lookup Service. Check vm_ssoreg.log in the system temporary folder for more details..."

My setup all within VMworkstation:

-windows server2008r2 primary domain controller host name/ip= dc1/10.10.10.100

-windows server2008r2 secondary domain controller host name/ip = dc2/10.10.10.105

-windows server2008r2 ->trying to install vCenter Server host name/ip = vctr/10.10.10.110

All the vm's above are on the same NAT'd for workstation settings

I've read tons of articles on this error on the only things I could find are:

-password has non ASCII character -> not my issue

-DNS is not correct -> using nslookup all ips resolve to correct host names

-There is update 5.1.0 1a but I cannot download it from vmware.com bc I don't have permission

I'd really like to evaluate this product but can't get past this error if anyone can help PLEASE let me know!

thanks in advance
