No Inventory in WebClient (while vSphere Client is fine)

$

I am a VMWare Newbe.

I installed VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.0b released. (followed the TinkerTry instructions Deploy VMware's vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 in a home lab, without SSO errors - YouTube)

I could not configure a DataCenter over the WebClient, so I switch to vSphereClient.

Now I can't see the DataCenter (and all the inventory) in the WebClient (vSphereClient is fine).

If I try to create a DataCenter over the WebClient I get the message that "datacenter" is already there.

What could be the problem?

Replace VMware Virtual Center SSL Certificate with Microsoft CA

Hello All,

I'm trying to replace the default SSL certificates from Virtual Center 2.01 with certificates from my own Microsoft Enterprise root CA..

I followed this howto..

http://edward.aractingi.net/blog/archives/virtualization/[/b]

in this article i'am missing how i get my rui.crt[/b] certificate ?

i am only able to get the rui.pem[/b] , rui.pfx[/b] and rui.key[/b] files

And this howto..

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi_vcserver_certificates.pdf[/b]

(I get the feeling that this document is not meant for a Microsoft CA just a local root CA)

in this article i get stuck on page 8 with the line..

openssl ca -out ruit.crt -config openssl.cnf -infiles mycsr.csr

error message[/b]

c:\Program files\openssl\openssl ca -out Webaccess.crt -config openssl.cfg -infiles Webaccess.csr

Using configuration from openssl.cfg

Loading 'screen' into random state - done

unable to load CA certificate

3360:error:0906D06C:PEM routines:PEM_read_bio:

no start line:.\crypto\pem\pem_lib.c:663:Expecting: CERTIFICATE

Was anybody able to replace this certificates ? Who can help me out ?

Memory metrics in Virtual Center. A true measure of Host memory by a Guest.

$

What set of Virtual Center metrics will provide the true amount of memory that a guest "uses"? I am running at level 2 detail at this point.

The consumed seems to key off of the granted, which is misleading to me. Granted seems like how much the guest is "given. The consumed gets closer by taking into account the shared memory efficiencies.

So.. Active + what?? = memory used by the guest on the host.

Could this number be summed to find out all the memory used on the host? Does it consider the overhead/kernel?

I have reviewed the vCenter Performance Counters  wiki and it is not clear what adds together to get the number I am looking for.

Thanks for any help,

John

Trying to follow KB: 2118939 - Replacing the Lookup Service SSL certificate on a Platform Services Controller 6.0 - ls_update_certs.py - FAILURE

$

EDIT: Posted wrong KB in subject line and below (corrected KB the link shown below, was not able to edit Subject field above).

I am attempting to follow KB 2109074 - VMware KB: vCenter Server or Platform Services Controller certificate validation error for external VMware Solutions…

My steps relate to the 2 KB's linked to in the main KB article: 2109074

Everything goes fine in preparation to run the final command like getting the old certificate fingerprint, getting the new certificate file, etc.

When attempting to run the actual command in Windows (the most successful version of the command I am running as follows):

"C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\python\python.exe" ls_update_certs.py --url https://vcenter.domain.local/lookupservice/sdk --fingerprint b1:35:c1:9c:a5:59:dd:ab:3d:c2:50:e7:92:79:82:f0:b6:85:7d:c8 --certfile C:\certificates\new_machine.crt --user Administrator@vsphere.local --password "Passw0rd&"

BTW, the VMware KB says:

"Note: On Windows systems, enclose the password in double quotes."

I get is this error (fails on get-site-id) :

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Traceback (most recent call last):

  File "ls_update_certs.py", line 19, in <module>

    args.password)

  File "C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\VMware Identity Services\lstool\s

cripts\lstoolutil.py", line 79, in modify_svc_ep_certs

    raise Exception("'lstool get-site-id' failed: %d" % rc)

Exception: 'lstool get-site-id' failed: 1

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've tried this on 2 different vCenter servers (both at 6.0u2) and get the same behavior, I've tried every combo of passwords for PSC/SSO like Passw0rd!   Pass-w0rd    P@ssw0rd  W34df*fdc4  ..etc, and tried it with or without quotes (2 quotes, 4 quotes), tried bash escape after password like: \   ...and nothing works. I'm not even sure if this is a password issue. A few lines above I see things showing this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Caused by: com.vmware.vim.vmomi.core.exception.CertificateValidationException: Server certificate chain not verified

Caused by: javax.net.ssl.SSLPeerUnverifiedException: peer not authenticated at sun.security.ssl.SSLSessionImpl.getPeerCertificates(SSLSessionImpl.java:421) at com.vmware.vim.vmomi.client.http.impl.ThumbprintTrustManager$Hostname Verifier.verify(ThumbprintTrustManager.java:296)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However, I can successfully run this command (which doesn't seem to require a password):

"C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\python\python.exe" "C:\Program Files\VMware\vCenter Server\VMware Identity Services\lstool\scripts\lstool.py" get-site-id --url https://vcenter.domain.local/lookupservice/sdk"

..It works fine and shows the SSO name of default-sso-site.

All other aspects of the signed certificate install have succeed except the Lookup Service which is causing my NSX Manager install to not connect back up to the Lookup Service..

I also am getting the error from the Web Client showing this:

"Error occurred while processing request. Check vSphere WebClient logs for details."     (Refer to KB: https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2129053 )   ...caused by same issue as well:

Anyone else see this behavior or know of any possible way to recover from this without having to re-install? How to debug the .py scripts better? Is there any better documentation from VMware on how these scripts work? Can the Lookup Service be re-installed?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

vCenter session - find origin of login

I have a user that can't tell me what is logging into vCenter with his credentials.  The account will go idle for several hours.  If I kill the session, it comes right back.  How can I find something more identifiable like an IP of where the session originates?  I tried http://nickapedia.com/2010/02/15/vsphere-mini-monitor-now-with-more-cowbell/ on my Win 7 x64 desktop but it crashes in various ways when trying to login to my vCenter.  I know there are PowerCLI scripts to kill idle sessions but this "service" will just log right back in immediately.  Thanks.

Hi all,

I wanted to patch vCenter Appliance via commandline. I mounted the FP ISO and started with this command:

software-packages stage --iso

That worked so far. Then I run this:

software-packages install --staged

Here is what happened:

Moving Virtual Center from VM back to Physical

Hey guys,

While I think this is straight forward, I would like to simply confirm and of course hand out points for worthwhile contributions.

Here is what we got:  We have VC 2.5 running in a VM that connects to a remote SQL instance.  I have a physical computer that is ready to get VC installed, the lic file has been moved over but nothing installed yet.

What we want to do:  We think the right thing to do is stop the connection on the VM to the remote SQL database.  Turn off the VM.  On the physical machine,  install VC 2.5, and point it to the remote SQL instance, next next finsh.

Anything we should be wary of, is it this simple and straight forward?  Any gotchas?

Respectfully,

Matthew

datastore performance reporting only keeps 1 hour

$

I'm trying to track down what I think are disk latency issues in mt Dell MD3000i  but the performance reporting for datastores in vcenter only seems to keep 1 hour (and can't be changed)  I can view space utilization statistics for any time period i want (not very useful as we don't add or remove vm's very much)  but who was the bright spark that thought 1 hour was enough performance data!  means I have to watch the thing constantly to try and "catch" any latency periods.  pleae tell me there is a way to change this!!!

Help.

<rant mode on>

Oh and who ever changed the way you post and navigate the forums needs to get fired!!!  this is brutal.  almost makes me not want to bother with the forums!  why can't you just navigate to a forum and create a thread there like ever other forum software on the internet!  must be inhouse programmers!!

How to migrate vCenter Server VM

$

(Using vSphere Essentials package)

So I need to migrate my vCenter Server VM (Windows 2008 Standard) from one ESXi host to another. I've migrated several others already using the "Migrate" wizard in vCenter Server, but now I want to migrate the vCenter Server VM itself. How can I do that, since the only way I've found to migrate VM's in vSphere Essentials is through the vCenter Server, but in order to migrate that VM, it must be powered down! I've tried using the vSphere Client to log directly into the host, but there are no options there to migrate/move a VM.

Host profile remediation failing

$

One for the forums, as I can't find the error on Google or Bing, and being a home lab it doesn't really warrant a support call...

I've set up Host Profiles in my vCenter server, extracted from a host (192.168.2.51). I've added other hosts to the cluster and successfully remediated those, and changed settings in the host profile and successfully remediated the source host. But then I decided to remove and add the 192.168.2.51 host back using its FQDN, which seemed to require me to disconnect it from the VDS's that it was attached to. Having then removed it from the cluster and rebooted I added it back and went to remediate it to get the port groups back the way they were and I got the following error:

The remediation cannot proceed, because the deferred settings cannot be extracted from the selected hosts.

vsphere-error.JPG

I can't find any mention of this error online, and I've tried resetting host customizations, checking host profile compliance and rebooting the host and the vCenter server (and again in varying combinations). I suspect it may be due to the fact this was the host I pulled the host profile from, and have now effectively renamed by adding it back using its FQDN, so the answer is probably to extract a new host profile from a different ESXi host and remediate using that - but I thought I'd first throw this out there in case the solution helps someone else, and the solution may be a good learning point, which is the whole reason for a home lab in the first place.

linked mode vcenter ADAM errors

All,

I am getting the following warning in both vcenter servers that are connected via linked mode.  They are 2012 R2 servers running vcenter 5.5 U2.

This is the replication status for the following directory partition on this directory server. Directory partition: DC=virtualcenter,DC=vmware,DC=int This directory server has not recently received replication information from a number of directory servers. The count of directory servers is shown, divided into the following intervals. More than 24 hours: 1 More than a week: 1 More than one month: 1 More than two months: 1 More than a tombstone lifetime: 1 Tombstone lifetime (days): 180 Directory servers that do not replicate in a timely manner may encounter errors. They may miss password changes and be unable to authenticate. A DC that has not replicated in a tombstone lifetime may have missed the deletion of some objects, and may be automatically blocked from future replication until it is reconciled. To identify the directory servers by name, use the dcdiag.exe tool. You can also use the support tool repadmin.exe to display the replication latencies of the directory servers. The command is "repadmin /showvector /latency ".

I found this kb but only refers to vmware view ADAM database.

VMware KB: Forcing replication between ADAM databases

Per the kb

Run this command on all Connection Brokers in the same ADAM instance to show the replication neighbors and the last time they replicated (Note: In Windows 2008 R2, you must run the command in C:\WINDOWS\system32):

C:\WINDOWS\adam\repadmin.exe /showrepl localhost:389 DC=vdi,DC=vmware,DC=int

I simply switched the command to show replication in the virtualcenter domain:

C:\WINDOWS\adam\repadmin.exe /showrepl localhost:389 DC=virtualcenter,DC=vmware,DC=int

However, when I do that, I am getting the following errors.

C:\Windows\system32>C:\WINDOWS\adam\repadmin.exe /showrepl localhost:389 DC=virt

Can anyone provide feedback as to why I am getting this?  There's not alot of documentation and what is out there pertains to VMware View, not Linked Mode.  I was able to find this which seems to pertain, but it talks about seizing roles...maybe I am misunderstanding what happens within Linked Mode and the ADAM database, but neither of these vcenter servers are domain controllers and I certainly don't want to seize a role from a DC...

Vcenter (VCSA) update failed

Hello,

i'm running the VCSA since a couple of months and tried to update it to 5.0 Update 1a (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2031331). After 14 hours the Update was running, middle in database-upgrade, nothing happened anymore, that's why i've rebooted the Vcenter appliance. It never came up again

Well, then i've made a restore through Veeam and finally the Vcenter appliance is running again, with the old 5.0.03324 Build 472350.

Now i would to try to Update the Appliance to 5.0.0.5239 Build 759855 again, but the Update failed before it really starts

What can i do?

vCenter 5.1 delay when opening vm console

$

Last week we updated our vCenter Server from 5.0 to 5.1. And since that moment we experience some delay while opening vm console windows.

We used to have a black screen for about 1 or maybe 2 seconds before we got to see our vm console screen.

But now we have to watch a black screen  9 to 10 seconds before we get to see our vm console.

Has anyone got any ideas what i can do to speed up this process?

One weird thing i noticed.

In the vCenter database we used to have the following tables.

VPX_HIST_STAT1

VPX_HIST_STAT2

VPX_HIST_STAT3

VPX_HIST_STAT4

But now i see these tables are not here anymore, instead i see a lot of new tables.

VPX_HIST_STAT1_1

VPX_HIST_STAT1_2

VPX_HIST_STAT1_3

etc.

and also

VPX_HIST_STAT2_1...

VPX_HIST_STAT3_1...

VPX_HIST_STAT4_1...

etc

I have no idea if this have something to do with each other, but i can't check the fragmentation of the performance history anymore.

use vCenter5
go
dbcc showcontig (VPX_HIST_STAT1)
go

Gives error: Msg 5239, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Unable to process object ID 2102298549 (object 'VPX_HIST_STAT1') because this DBCC command does not support objects of this type.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

vCenter 5 Web Client Service does not start

After the installation of the Web Client Server on the vCenter Server (with no errors) the Web Client Service won't start.

In the windows log following error is reported

The vSphere Web Client service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function.....

Event ID 7024

EventRecord ID 2655

The Server is a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Server with vCenter 5.0

Any Ideas why the Web Client Service does not start?

Thanks

Installing vcenter appliance is not an easy thing

Maybe it was firefox's block of flash, maybe there's a problem with the client integration plugin, but firefox keeps requesting to restart it due to the plugin being installed. Got a clean copy and then it worked, although I do get the occasional time out when opening the installation page.

I was a bit surprised I needed a dhcp server running despite providing a fixed ipaddress when installing the platform controller, but I got that installed as well. The problem I'm currently having is installing the vcenter bit, by itself. Filling in all the requested info and letting the installation run its course, I get the following results.

The installation page displays the message

vCenter 5.5 Web Client shows incorrect inventory

I upgraded my vCenter to 5.5 from 5.1 and it works except the Web Client has incorrect inventory data.  It is missing some VMs and has some ghost VMs that don't actually exist.  There aren't any error messages that suggest the server is malfunctioning.  The really strange thing is that when I connect with the vSphere Client on Windows, everything is correct there.  Also Veeam shows all the correct inventory when it connects to the vCenter server.  So its only the Web Client that is wrong.  Has anyone experienced this or have any ideas on how to force the Web Client to refresh?

edit: forgot to mention this is VCSA
