[Clustering] Single VM spanning across multiple physical hosts ?

$

Folks,

Is it possible to allocate to VM more resources than single ESX host have in order to  build single big VM out of many physical hosts?

For instance I have two ESX hosts with 2GHz and 16 GB DRAM each.

Would it be possible to run SINGLE VM which will be granted 4GHz and 32GB DRAM ? Or maybe 4GHz and 20 GB DRAM (to "borrow" some resources from other Host).

I'm reading about clustering/DRS technology in vSphere and it's not said explicite that it's possible. We always have references to ESX hosts - to dynamicly relocate from one Host to another etc.... DRS is introducing "global" scheduler but I'm not sure whether it works that way.

Any good links are much appreciated !

Sebastian

Having issues adding ESXi host to vCenter Server Appliance

$

I've been spending lots of time working on the new vCenter 5.1.0A.

I have two vCenter environments in my test and dev.

vCenter1 = Windows 2008 R2 vCenter server. It has local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates as per following Derek Seamans blog http://derek858.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/vmware-vcenter-51-installation-part-1.html. I can add ESXi hosts to this vCenter no problems. These ESXi hosts have local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates.

vCenter2 = VMware vCenter Server Appliance. It has local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates as per following Doug Baer's blog http://www.goitpartners.com/blog/?p=662. I CANNOT add ESXi hosts to this vCenter when they have local domain Microsoft CA self signed certificates. I CAN add an ESXi host only if I have NOT done anything with the certificates.

The error I get is:

License not available to perform the operation.
License file download from blade001.xxx.yyy to vCenter Server failed due to exception: vim.fault.SSLVerifyFault.

I've attached the screenshot "unable to add host to ESXi - custom cert.png" that shows this.

When I add an ESXi host that has NOT had the certificate replaced, I get prompted that it is unable to verify the authenticity of the host and asks me to veryify the thumbprint. I click yes to verify and the host is added successfully.

I've attached the screenshot "Adding host blade002 with default cert.png" that shows this.

So this is really puzzling. When a host has a replaced certificate, the thumbpring MUST be verified by the vCenter Appliance because I DO NOT get prompted about the authenticity of the host.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

The one thing I really want to make clear is:

  • I can add the ESXi host with replaced certificates to a vCenter 5.1.0A server running on Windows 2008 R2 (vCenter1)
  • This then confirms with me that there is nothing wrong with the certificate on the ESXi host
  • I remove the host from vCenter1
  • I try and add the host to vCenter2 (Appliance) and I get the error, the host never gets added to vCenter

vpxd consuming all memory -- vCenter slooooooow and cannot connect

As reported in http://communities.vmware.com/message/2020222 we are still experiencing the issue with vpxd consuming huge amounts of RAM and causing severe vCenter slowness.  This has gotten much worse recently.  We are hoping to renew the conversation on this, as it is becoming intollerable, and our efforts have so far failed.

Configuratoin: VMware vCenter Server 5.0, update 1, version 5.0.0 build 623373.  Running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1, in a virtual machine with 4 vCPUs and 8 GB of memory, SQL database on same machine.

When the issue opccurs, the main vCenter executable, vpxd.exe uses up all available memory, causing severe vCenter slowness, to the point where vSphere Client cannot connect, tasks fail due to timeouts, remote desktop to the machine are extremely slow and almost completely unusable.  After stop/start of vpxd.exe service, or restart the Windows VM, the issue initially clears, but then returns later. We are now seeing this more than once per day, sometime 3 - 4 times in a single day.

In more detail:

- Windows task manager reports 99% of  memory is consumed.  Typically, this is around 6.5 GB of memory consumed  by vpxd.exe.

- Before the issue occurs, vpxd is typically consuming around 330 MB memory (reasonable)

- Other large consumers are sqlservr.exe around 1.0 GB, java.exe around 820 MB + 380 MB (there are two processes), tomecat6.exe 690 MB.  We think these are probably normal, and they do not grow out of control like vpxd does.

- During the issue, CPU also becomes very high, near 100%, as seen through vSphere Client performance

- VM is running current VMware tools (8.6.5, build 652272)

Things we have tried:

- Upgraded to vCenter Server 5.0u1

- Rebalanced vCPUs (as suggested in other thread).  Initially was 4 CPUs on 1 socket, changed to 2 CPUs on 1 socket, now 4 CPUs split across 2 sockets.

- Moved to VM version 8

- Set service to autostart, delayed

- General cleanup -- removed a bunch of servies we are not using (Orchestrator, Update Manger...)

Any further suggestions, known issues, FIXES, whatever would be helpful!

No Inventory in WebClient (while vSphere Client is fine)

I am a VMWare Newbe.

I installed VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.0b released. (followed the TinkerTry instructions Deploy VMware's vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 in a home lab, without SSO errors - YouTube)

I could not configure a DataCenter over the WebClient, so I switch to vSphereClient.

Now I can't see the DataCenter (and all the inventory) in the WebClient (vSphereClient is fine).

If I try to create a DataCenter over the WebClient I get the message that "datacenter" is already there.

What could be the problem?

vCenter Applicance 6.0 installation - WHY via a browser

Why do VMware insist on using a browser to install and configure the vCenter appliance v6.0. Why cant you deploy it via an OVF on a ESXi host like a normal appliance? So frustrating.

Foundation vs Standard

I am having trouble with working out the difference between the versions foundations and standard, I have a three site setup with three hosts in each site, I have two standard licences and two foundation and one 6 CPU for two fo the sites.

I understand that foundation will allow 3 host to be managed and that standard is unlimited provided you have enough CPU cals, can you use standard to manage hosts with foundation cals installed, or do a need a copy of standard for each site so that I can have linked management for all three sites.

Does Standard allow you to install vCenter in each site so you can manage any site for either of the 3 sites?

vCenter 6 DRS-available memory resources error

$

I have a case open with support on this but I wanted to see if anyone else has run into it.  We upgraded from ESXi 5.0/5.1 with vCenter 5.1 to ESXi 6 and vCenter 6.  After the upgrade, DRS has started throwing this error on our hosts:

"Unable to apply DRS resource settings on host.  The available Memory resources in the parent resource pool are insufficient for the operation...."

It'll appear usually after a vMotion (on or off) or a reset of a vm.  I did manage to clear it by reducing memory reservations on VM's but that's only a temporary fix.  Otherwise it appears to just randomly clear itself.

Looking at a vm's memory resource allocation shows it cannot reserve any memory (the orange triangle is at the far left.)

Across the cluster I have 2TB of memory, allocated to VM's I have 475GB.  Looking at the vm's on a host when this alarm is active also shows plenty of memory available.

Support has tried disabling and re-enabling HA.  That cleared it for about a day before it came back.  We've tried removing the pools.xml file, restarting the hosts and vCenter.

VM's and Hosts are the same as they were under ESXi 5.0/5.1 and vCenter 5.1.  This error never appeared on that version.

Thank you in advance for any insight.

vCenter Server Appliance checking for update hangs

Hey all,

I just wanted to update a vCSA appliance. Unfortunately it hangs in the status "Checking for aivailable updates..." as has no internet access.

I changed the settings to CD-ROM  updates, mounted the update-repo iso and restarted the appliance, but no luck, it's still in the checking for updates mode.

Anyone has an idea how to stop this process? As the check and install update buttons are disabled during the update search.

Thanks

Tim

Change domain on vCenter Server

Hi,

We are going to migrate all servers from one AD to Another. And I´m looking at the migration plan for vCenter Servers. What is the best way to migrate those to the new domain? We could do a fresh install in the new domain and just detach db from old domain and attach the databases to SQL in the new domain, and what is pros/cons of that?..

Mike

vCenter Server Service is not starting

I have performed all the changes to migrate the vCenter Server database from SQL Express to full SQL Server following the Knowledge Base ( that is posted by  VMware ) its URL is mentioned here  for reference VMware KB: Migrating the vCenter Server database from SQL Express to full SQL Server but still vCenter Server Service is requiring SQL Express db instance dependency at service starting however  i have reconfigure the System DSN according to new DB (That is restored in full SQL Server version after getting backup from SQL_Express) and also modified the registry Keys that are required to vCenter according to document as well.

Please help out.....how can fix this issue.....

VM vMotion across DataCenters

$

have an interesting situation in our VMware Infrastructure.   We have what appears to be 2 DataCenters observed in our vCenter Server 5.5.  All hosts are ESXi5.5.

I have always worked vMotion under the belief that I could not vMotion a VM in one DataCenter into a host on another DataCenter.   Each DataCenter supports different vLan subnets.  However, in our situation that appears NOT to be true.   We have been able to vMotion a VM from DataCenter2 to DataCenter1.   The odd thing is that we CAN NOT vMotion the other way around.  So, vMotion is only one way.

I thought this might be explained by looking at the way the switches are setup in each DataCenter.

DataCenter1:   Hosts on this DataCenter are setup with standard virtual switches.

DataCenter2.   Hosts on this DataCenter are setup with dvSwitches

I don't see any VMports or management network assigned to the IP addresses on either DataCenter.

The shared storage also is different and that is what I would expect since each DataCenter hosts its own SAN.

So, I'm confused.  How is it that a VM can vMotion across DataCenters?

I'm trying to do a P2V transition for a Windows Server 2003 machine using vCenter Converter. For some reason, I get an error that says

"unable to complete installation/uninstallation of vCenter Coverter agent on 'myserver.mydomain.local'

There doesn't seem to be any more detail available than that.

Currently have an ESX 4.1 server which I'm trying to migrate my VM from to a ESXi 5.5 server.  When I try to migrate I get a pbm.fault.PBMFault.summary with no additional information.  Logged into my vCenter server via vSphere Client.

Ideas?

I installed a new copy of vCenter 6.5.0. One host added. While installing VDP appliance, vSphereDataProtection-6.1.3.ova, I get the following error

  Failed to deploy OVF package.

  Cause:
A specified parameter was not correct:

The deploy asked for all the deployment details, where, DNS, IPs, etc. then ran a few minutes to about 65% completion when error occurred.

vSphere Web Client: Unable to connect to vCenter Inventory Service - https://vCenterServer.Domain:10443

Like the title says, when logging into vCenter 5.0 with the vSphere Web Client, I get an error that says its unable to connect to the vCenter Inventory Service.

The vCenter Inventory Service starts fine and is running as 'Local System', the same account used for all the other VMware related services.

I have done a bit of searching, but haven't found anyone that has my exact problem. Performance Overview works in vSphere Client, but searching the inventory does not.

Based on similar problems posted by others, I have looked at C:\ProgramData\VMware\Infrastructure\Inventory Service\Logs\ds.log and found the following:

That all repeats over and over. I've spent the last two days trying to figure this out, and I am out of ideas.

The log says that there is an incorrect username or password, but I am not sure where I can check and/or change it.
