What permissions are needed to deploy from OVA/OVF

$

Our environment is vCenter 4.1 U1 and ESXi 4.1 U1. We have a multi-tenant Lab environment where users are isolated with separate Resource Pools and separate VM, Storage, and Network folders. The users are administrators to all of these.

They want to be able to deploy OVA/OVF templates but, they get this error (attached image) at this point. I'd like to know the minimum permissions required to allow this without exposing other tenants resources.

Need to Disable SSL V3 - How can I disable it? Is it required?

The SSL protocol 3.0 design error, uses nondeterministic CBC padding, which makes it easier for man-in-the-middle attacks (POODLE) Additional information: (CVE-2014-3566)An unauthorised user who can take a man-in-the-middle (MitM) position can exploit this vulnerability and gain access to encrypted communication between a client and server. It is recommended to disable SSLv3 support to avoid this vulnerability.

Windows 2012 Server - Best practices for creating Template

On Windows 2012, has anyone created templates for this OS (VM)?

If so, what services did you remove, disable or install or what tweaks did you do to create a "Base" template?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

Client Integration plug-in not working

I have vCenter 5.5 running on Windows Server 2008R2. I am trying to access import an OVF, but when I do, it always tells me that I need to install the Client Integration Plug-in. I installed the 5.5.0 version and saw the same behavior in Chrome 54, IE 9, and Firefox 42. Here are the steps I've taken:

  • Installed the 6.0.0 version (6.0.0.3279) of the integration plug-in
  • Cleared all browsing data in Chrome
  • Set the Browser Mode and Document Mode in IE, to IE7
  • Verified that the NPAPI flag is no longer available in Chrome

What am I missing here? I really need to be able to use that integration plug-in.

Thanks.

multiple essentials plus licenses - Quick Q

hi there,

I've been asked to setup vCenter for a company that's bought 2x essentials plus licenses (v5). The have 6 hosts so will I have to create 2x Virtual Center servers

servers? I wasn't sure if the 3 host limit was applied to the vCenter or at cluster level.

Cheers,

VCenter System Memory Alert Hardware Status Tab

$

There is a "system memory Alert" in the hardware status tab of my VCenter, there is no problem with the hardware because I enter the IBM's IMM (Integrated Managment Module) and the server does NOT indicate a fault in the DIMM or memory slots or something that indicates a physical memory problem.

At this point my guess it's a VMware problem, but as I log on directly to the ESX Host, there is no such alert in the Configuration>Health Status section, I reset the managment services thinking it's some kind of VCenter-ESX Host problem, but the alarm continues in the VCenter

The Alarm it's a root directory on the DIMM's section as you can see at the screenshot...Snapshot1.JPG

VMware Component Manager service fails to start in vCenter Server 6 Update 2

$

Hello,

A brief idea of my test lab environment:

vCenter Servers:

vc1 - Registered to psc1 in Site1

vc2 - Registered to psc2 in Site2

External Platform Services Controllers:

psc1 - Site1

psc2 - Site2

SSO Domain: vsphere.local

I upgraded from vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3d to vCenter Server 6.0 Update 2. The vCenter servers in 5.5 had integrated / embedded SSO's and all the services running on the same machine and were in linked mode before the upgrade and I removed them from linked mode before the upgrade. They were upgraded to vCenter Server 6.0 with Embedded PSC and they automatically entered Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM).

After the step above, I deployed 2 external PSC's psc1 and psc2 in replication mode with vc1 and vc2 in the same site's Site1 and Site2 respectively. I then migrated the embedded psc's of both the vCenter Servers to their respective external psc replication partners by running the command cmsso-util reconfigure --repoint-psc "psc1/psc2" --username administrator --domain-name "vsphere.local" --passwd "administrator_password". This operation completed successfully and my vCenter's were reconfigured as vCenter Server with External PSC.

After this, I followed VMware KB article 2127057 (Determining replication agreements and status with the Platform Services Controller 6.0 (2127057) | VMware KB) to make the 2 external psc's psc1 and psc2 replication partners of each other by running the command vdcrepadmin -f createagreement -2 -h psc2.clifford.local -H psc1.clifford.local -u administrator -w "administrator_password". I ran this command from psc2. This operation also completed successfully and when I query the replication status of the replication partners psc1 and psc2, there is nothing wrong. However after restarting my vSphere Infrastructure, I see that vc1, psc1 and psc2 have all their services started successfully.

vc2 services seem to be failing to start, especially the VMware Component Manager service which is required for many other services to start. The VMware HTTP Reverse Proxy service starts successfully and I don't have any IIS role / feature installed on my machine. The error message that occurs while trying to manually start the service is as attached as file Error2.JPG in the discussion. The error from the Windows Event Log is as attached as file Error3.JPG in the discussion.

Please let me know how do I resolve this issue at the earliest.

vCenter 6 'Empty Inventory' due to permissions

$

I have a fully functional, completely working vCenter 6 environment. Admin users can log in and see the entire inventory, as they're supposed to.

However, I have a number of business users that need restricted permissions in a subfolder in the inventory. I have added a new role to vCenter with the permissions they need, and applied that role for that user to the specific subfolder.

Now: those users are not supposed to see any other folders in the inventory tree above of on the same level in the tree, just their own folder.

Before I upgraded to vCenter 6 (appliance), I had it working fine. With vCenter 6, this model broke: the users only see the 'empty inventory' text in the 'VMs and Templates' view.

Weird thing is: when that same user browses to 'vCenter Inventory Lists', clicks 'Virtual Machines', he sees his own (and only his own) VM and can interact with it in accordance with his permissions.

So it seems there's a new permission needed in vCenter to see only that part of the Inventory tree applicable to a specific user, but I (1) haven't found that permission yet and (2) wouldn't even know to which object in the tree to assign the permission

Any thoughts?

Option to export to OVA file gone in 6.5?

$

Hi folks:

I backup my VMs to OVA files (I'm got the essentials bundle and only a couple of hosts so I can do this manually), which I've typically done with the C client.  However, I created a new VM the other day and set it up as hardware version 13, meaning that it can't be managed with the C client any longer.  After I got it all configured I tried to export it to an OVA file with the vcenter server appliance 6.5 flash client, but I find that there is no option to create an OVA file.  Also, when I try to export to an OVF file, I don't get any choices of where the file is to be saved.  All I see are some tasks running saying exporting OVF template and OVF package that are stuck on 0 percent, and nothing else happens.

Am I missing something here, or is this whole OVF / OVA export thing completely broken other than via the C client?

template actions grayed out

Hi,

Today I've found out that for one of my templates some of the actions are grayed out. I can successfully deploy vm from this template, however I can't convert it to vm, nor rename it, nor remove it from inventory, nor delete it from disk. There are no on-going actions for this template currently. How can I find out why those actions are grayed out (my other templates are just fine, hasn't got those actions grayed out)?

vCenter Server Appliance update and VMware Tools

$

I've just updated VCSA to 5.1.0.10000 Build 1065184. I had to uninstall VMware Tools first 'cause update failed with

"VMware Tools cannot install because it appears that another installation of

VMware Tools is already present. Please remove the previous installation and

then attempt to install this copy of VMware Tools again."

error in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/updatecli.log (I had similar problem with previous update).

After update I can see in this log:

"22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Running /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_reconfigure_tools

VMware tools is not installed on this VM.

22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Update status: Done VMware tools reconfiguration"

Should I install VMware Tools via vSphere Web Client again? I supposed VMware Tools to be installed by VCSA update. I can see packages anyway:

Data Service Container Process Heap Memory Alarms

Every so often, I'm seeing these two alarms appear in the WC.

2015-10-27 10_03_43-Clipboard.png

The Data Service container process is running low on heap memory (> 90% utilized.)

followed by

Data Service is functioning properly.

They appear and go away within a minute or two every time.  On the Data Service heap memory thing, I did review this KB VMware KB: ESXi/ESX host reports VMFS heap warnings when hosting virtual machines that collectively use 4 TB or 20 T…, but I can't modify the suggested parameters under VCSA 6.  It says it's supposed to just do its job and grow as needed, but to continue to see these pop in and out is bothering me.  It also seems to happen more frequently when a VM CPU usage alarm is triggered.

Does anyone think this is indicative of a bigger problem that I should be concerned about, or is this normal behavior to deal with the amount of activity on the instance?  There are a lot of VMs in use and the datastore is always around 75% full, but CPU and RAM have been 50% or less.  If abnormal, where should I begin to look for any signs of trouble?  RAM capacity of the VCSA or some other config parameter(s) that might need to be tuned?

Remove Snapshot Hangs in VC

I have 4 hosts, all connected to a central iSCSI storage system.  When I try to remove a snapshot from a VM, its only snapshot, it goes to 95% and then sits there.  This prevents me from being able to vmotion the host.  Any ideas?

VCSA 6.0 VMware Content Library Service

$

It seems as though the Content Library Service has up and vanished from my vCenter Services. I created a content library back in April. I went to delete and add an online library I built and it wouldn't work. I dug around and did some homework and found where the core services were. I used a BASH shell command to try and start it. I figured it wouldn't work, but here is what it spit back.

Has anyone had issues with their content library before?

vSphere client on a Windows 10 machine - mouse problems inside VM consoles

$

Aloha,

I just upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. I am also using vSphere client 5.5.0 Build 1618071.

When managing vm's all is good and right with the world. But when I access

a vm console - either by the tab or opening a stand-alone console window the mouse

becomes very erratic on the vm desktop. Movement is unpredictable. Right clicking

on an icon sometimes opens the proper context sensitive menu. And when I do get

the menu, selecting the desired action is next to impossible.

Has anyone else experienced this and has a solution???

Mahalo,
