hi guys

I setup the

SMTP Server IP

and

Sender Account in my new and shiny vCenter Appliance 5 server

SMTP Server: 192.168.1.x

Sender account: vcenter@mycompany.net

now testing for the email alerts I get that my email server gets or receives email from the root account from my vCenter app lie this

root@servername.mycompany.net

so this is not valid and my email server won't relay this email

any idea if there is a issue for vCenter appliance since is linux having issues sending emails?

thanks a lot

vCenter 5.5 Installation failing.

Hello Guys,

It's a brand new server with Windows 2008 R2 installed from scratch with all updates.  vCenter Single Sign-On, Web Client, and Inventory Service gets installed with no issues but during the installation of vCenter Server, it gives and error with the following message:

The wizard was interrupted before vmware vcenter could be completely installed. Refer to the log files vim-vci-msi.log.  I have also attached the log file it refers to.  I have already tried KB article 2013922 http://goo.gl/tTjBMQ but no change. I don't see anything obvious that could cause the installation to fail.  Thanks for your help.

vSphere Web Client on OSX no mouse pointer issue

$

I have upgraded vCenter server to 5.5.0a which makes available client integration tools for OSX, which means that virtual consoles through vSphere web client are supposed to be supported on Mac.  In general the web client works very well, except that if I open a virtual console on a VM which does not have vmware tools installed, such as a fresh install, there is no mouse pointer.  After vmware tools installs and the server reboots (on a Windows Server) the mouse pointer becomes available.  Unfortunately it's often the reason I would go to the console that I need to install vmware tools or vmware tools quit working, which makes this a very annoying bug.  Anyone aware of a workaround?

My environment right now has only ESXi 5.1 hosts, with vCenter 5.5.  This occurs in both Firefox and Chrome on 10.8 and 10.9.

vCenter Server Appliance update and VMware Tools

$

I've just updated VCSA to 5.1.0.10000 Build 1065184. I had to uninstall VMware Tools first 'cause update failed with

"VMware Tools cannot install because it appears that another installation of

VMware Tools is already present. Please remove the previous installation and

then attempt to install this copy of VMware Tools again."

error in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/updatecli.log (I had similar problem with previous update).

After update I can see in this log:

"22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Running /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_reconfigure_tools

VMware tools is not installed on this VM.

22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Update status: Done VMware tools reconfiguration"

Should I install VMware Tools via vSphere Web Client again? I supposed VMware Tools to be installed by VCSA update. I can see packages anyway:

Problems after installing vCenter 5.1a - No vCenter Server found

Sorry, I'm new at this and I'm having a problem installing vCenter 5.1a on Windows Server 2008 R2 using the simple install.  After completing the install without any errors, I start up the vSphere Web Client, log in and it comes up with no vCenter servers and a message that says "To get started install either a vCenter Server system or obtain access permission to an existing vCenter Server system."  I'm on my 4th time though and it's consistant in result, so I figure I should ask.

If it matters, the Windows Server is not a member of Active Directory, the DNS works forward and reverse, I tried both the IP address and the fqdn.

I'm not sure where to being troubleshooting this.  This is my first vCenter installation. I've checked all of the services and they are running.

I have looked at some log files and it seems pretty clear that something is trying to talk to something and is being refused, but I have no idea why.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

Web Client throws Error #2032 when accessed through any sort of reverse proxy / SSL VPN

I've been trying to publish the Web Client through our SSL VPN which has a nice workspace to publish web links.

Unfortunately, something in the vSphere web client breaks very badly if you do not connect directly to the application - it loads the background image but instead of displaying the login dialog it simply bombs out with an "Error #2032" message.

Anyone found a fix for this?

vCenter Converter 4.2.0 - Unable to contact the specified host.

Hi,

I've searched all over the internet and been working with VMware tech support, but I am unable to find a solution.  I am running vSphere 4.1 on Windows 2008 R2 and all is working well, except I am unable to import any physical machine into vCenter.  No matter if I use IP, host name, host:port, I always get the error "Unable to contact the specified host..." when trying to install the converter agent remotely.

If I use converter standalone or manually install the agent on the source, the conversion works fine.

Conversions worked fine in 3.5 but now on 4.1, it is broken.  I have verified that all the ports are open and I can connect to all shares on the source machine from my vCenter server.  UAC is off and the windows firewall is off.  Does anybody have any clues on what may be going on?

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Distributed switch problem

I am configuring a new VMkernel distributed switch and trying to add a new vMotion virtual adapter. I input the correct IP address information and received the error -

“Call "HostNetworkSystem.AddVirtualNic" for object "networkSystem-99" on vCenter Server "" failed.

Operation failed, diagnostics report: A vmkernel nic for the connection point already exists:”.

I have tried all sorts of things but it will not add the VMkernel IP. I would be very grateful if anyone has any ideas.

Hello all,

Just curious to hear your thougts on SNAPSHOTS!! Better powered off or on.

What are the benefits either way.

There has been a lot of discussions going back and forth here at work.

Personally my thoughts are to take them when powered off when possible.

Any help is appreciated

Can't use Remote Console in Web Client: "SSL verification failure for 'My_ESXI_Host' due to a host thumbprint mismatch: stored thumbprint does not match certificate thumbprint."

I'm brand new to vSphere 5.5.  I just upgraded a 4.1U1 install and everything went well.  However, now that I'm trying to work with the web client, I can't actually connect to any of my VMs via the Launch Console functionality.  It spawns a new browser window and then gives me the error shown in the topic about a SSL cert thumbprint mismatch.  My Google-fu showed a VMware KB article about stopping the Web Client service an then going into %ProgramData%\VMware\vSphere Web Client\SerenityDB\ to delete whatever's there and restart the service - no effect.

Any clues?  I can still connect without issue using the standard 5.5 vi-client.

Trying to upgrade VCenter to 5.5 - when upgrading the SSO portion, get an error saying that the VMware KDC service failed to start - verify that you have sufficient privs, etc. it is installing as local system. stops immediately upon starting. no helpful info in system logs. try it as a local administrator on the VCenter server - still fails immediately. anyone have any recommendations or ideas where i can look to find out the source of the issue and get it resolved?

thanks!

vSphere 5.5 and Windows vSphere Client

I recently did a fresh install of vCenter 5.5, and then upgraded my hosts to 5.5 from 5.0 and moved them into the new vCenter. I have noticed a slight problem with vCenter. I can log into it without any issues using the web client. It logs in the first time I try every time. However, when I try to log into the same vCenter server with the Windows "fat" client, it has problems logging in, and I have to try several (5-10 times or more) before it will finally log in. It gives the following error:

"The vSphere Client could not connect to "<vCenter>". The server '<vCenter>' took too long to respond. (The command has timed out as the remote server is taking too long to respond.)"

I am not sure why the web client logs in without a problem while the Windows client is very hit-and-miss with getting in. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

VMware vSphere Web Client - migrate option greyed out

$

When selecting a VM to migrate the option to migrate is greyed out.  In fact, Power On, Migrate, Revert to Current Snapshot are greyed out.  I would like to migrate this VM to another host and datastore.

ESXi version 5.1.0 build 1021289

VMware vCenter Server, 5.1.0 build 947673

I've migrated 154 VMs and out of the 154 VMs migrated approximately a dozen VMs would not allow for live migrations(migrate... option greyed out).  I could not identify any commonality between the dozen VMs that did not allow for live migrations.

I really need to migrate this VM in a live state if at all possible.

When vCenter checks to see if a VM is a valid candidate to migrate, what does it check for because the migrate option is NOT grey for about a second before it becomes greyed out?

Adding Hosts With Existing VMs to "Greenfield" DRS Enabled Cluster

$

I am currently involved in an evaluation project for Hypervisor 5.5 and vCenter. Existing are 2 physical servers with redundant everything and 8 SAS hot swap hard drive bays. Initially, of the 8 bays only 4 were populated with hard drives. The hard drives were striped, ESXi 5.0 was loaded, 4 VMs were created on each server and all lived happily ever after.

Now I would like to upgrade those servers to 5.5... as follows:

I populated the remaining 4 bays on each server with hard drives and created a second stripe of sufficient capacity (twice the capacity of the original 4 drives). I shut down the servers, switched the boot stripe to the new stripe of drives and installed ESXi 5.5 on the new stripe. The old stripe also remains in tact, so I can boot to ESXi 5.0 if I set to boot from the original stripe or boot to ESXi 5.5 if I boot to the new stripe (both OSes boot fine, are properly networked, vCenter configured, etc.).

When booting into 5.5, it sees its own, new stripe and also finds the original stripe which is listed as a second attached datastore (I actually feel I want this to make the eventual VM migration easy from the old to the new datastore), both are Local LSI Disk, Non-SSD, Type VFMS5.

Panic sets in when I boot both machines into 5.5 and it comes time to add the 5.5 hosts into a cluster (I would also like to test DRS, vStorage, and HA) and I reach the setting of, "Choose Resource Pool." I am scared to death that selecting the first option, "Put all of this host's virtual machines in the cluster's root resource pool. Resource pools currently present on the host will be deleted." will mean not only a reformat of the new stripe which I would like to add to the cluster, but also the still attached older stripe which has data that I want to maintain. I do not want to lose the data or the VMs on the original stripe, but want to migrate them into a new cluster of 2 ESXi 5.5 hosts. I was actually hoping to migrate the data to the new strips on the new hosts and then re-purpose the 2 original arrays (across both machines) as a third vStorage array.

Questions:

1. If I select the option, "Put all of this host's virtual machines in the cluster's root resource pool. Resource pools currently present on the host will be deleted." with all drives attached, will all my data be lost?

2. If I pull the 4 original drives (5.0) and use the option, "Put all of this host's virtual machines in the cluster's root resource pool. Resource pools currently present on the host will be deleted." only with the new arrays connected (5.5), and then reconnect the old arrays after the hosts are added to the cluster, will the re added arrays still get sucked in and data deleted?

3. Is picking the second option, "Create a new resource pool for this host's virtual machines and resource pools. This preserves the host's current resource pool hierarchy." a safe option? If this option works, does it matter if I have my original array attached when adding the hosts into the cluster?

Last point: In reading every document I could find it seems strongly suggested to configure hosts that do not have an VMs deployed, which is why I am going to great lengths to try to keep the new hosts as empty as possible and with 1 port basic networking pending finishing the configuration. Does it matter if I migrate the VMs or add them as guests to the ESXi 5.5 before or after I add the hosts to the cluster?

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

vCenter Server 5.5 installation, MSSQL problem

Hi,

I'm installing vCenter Server 5.5. I've already created MSSQL database, users and roles with all required permissions, using scripts from installation directory.

During installing, after entering database credentials, the error message appears: "The DB user entered does not have the required permissions needed to install and configure vCenter Server with the selected DB. Correct the following errors: The database user 'vpxuser' does not have the following privileges on the 'VCDB' database:..."(details on screenshots).

What permissions are needed to deploy from OVA/OVF

$

Our environment is vCenter 4.1 U1 and ESXi 4.1 U1. We have a multi-tenant Lab environment where users are isolated with separate Resource Pools and separate VM, Storage, and Network folders. The users are administrators to all of these.

They want to be able to deploy OVA/OVF templates but, they get this error (attached image) at this point. I'd like to know the minimum permissions required to allow this without exposing other tenants resources.

Dear Team,

In vcenter server inventory list, VM Tools status is displayed as "Out of date", just want to know what does it mean (vmware tools functions will work or not),
