Performance Overview and Plugins do not work

$

Dear All,

as the topic mentions: I can not open the performance overview tabs within the vSphere client and the vSphere Client can not download the plug-ins (e.g. the vCenter Service Status plug in). After searching the web for a while I can not find anything wrong in my configuration. The root cause seems seems to be that the tomcat does not listen on port 8443. What could be the reason for this?

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8005

  TCP 127.0.0.1:8005 0.0.0.0:0 ABHÖREN 101160

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8009

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8080

  TCP 127.0.0.1:8080 0.0.0.0:0 ABHÖREN 101160

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8443

  TCP 0.0.0.0:18443 0.0.0.0:0 ABHÖREN 4

  TCP    [::]:18443             [::]:0                 ABHÖREN         4

The process behind port 18443 does not work, because it returns a 404 for every URL on that port.

I'll attach the server.xml from my tomcat conf. I'm running vSphere 4.1.0 on a Windows 2008 R2 Server.

Thank you in advance!

VMware VirtualCenter Server Service not starting

$

I've been fighting with this issue for a while now and haven't been able to find a solution - even with checking the posts on this forum.

I am running VMware vCenter Server 5.1.0.32743 on a Windows 2008R2 physical server (not on a domain). Whenever I make a hardware change (ie, adding a SCSI card) the VirtualCenter Server service (and also the VirtualCenter Management Webservices service) refuses to start.

When I remove the SCSI card the issue still persists and the only way for me to resolve so far is to restore the server from backup - obviously not ideal and I need to connect tape drives to this server.

servicenotstarting1.png

I get the standard event 1000 in event viewer also.

I have tried changing the service startup types so that SSO service comes up first (as suggested in one of the KB articles) but this has no effect.

The back end of the vpxd-xx.log file shows this:

If I try to go to that commandserver url in the log above in a browser, it also get a 404:

404.png

The only thing similar I can find online is here:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2036170

Very similar exception error but nothing similar in my discover-is.log file.

From that kb link above I have run the following command:

C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\SSOServer\utils>ssocli.cmd configure-riat -a discover-is -u admin -p <masterPassword>

And I get the following output which confirms the discover-is log:

cli.png

Netstat shows that port 7444 is opened by Java and nothing else. The other potential problem port (443) is not in use by anything else that it shouldnt be.

I suspect this may be the cause of the problem but I have no idea where to go next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreiciated.

Many thanks,

Matt

Vcenter (VCSA) update failed

Hello,

i'm running the VCSA since a couple of months and tried to update it to 5.0 Update 1a (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2031331). After 14 hours the Update was running, middle in database-upgrade, nothing happened anymore, that's why i've rebooted the Vcenter appliance. It never came up again

Well, then i've made a restore through Veeam and finally the Vcenter appliance is running again, with the old 5.0.03324 Build 472350.

Now i would to try to Update the Appliance to 5.0.0.5239 Build 759855 again, but the Update failed before it really starts

What can i do?

vCenter 5.5 web console

Just upgraded from ver4.1 to 5.5 on vCenter and ESXi. I'm trying to learn the new WebConsole and while I am able to make my way around most of the new Console, it is a bit of a pain. Is there any documentation or Books that I could that focuses on the new Web Console so that I can use it as a reference rather than clicking around endlessly to find where the features I want are now in the Web Console? For example, I can see all the virtual machine but I would like to also see what datastores each is listed in but it's not available in the view of Virtual Machines. So, where is it?

SSO registration failed while installing VMware vCenter 5.5 Error29113

Hi Friends,

I have downloaded VMware vSphere 5.5. Last two days I was trying to install vCenter 5.5 but could able to do. Let me explain thoroughly.

Domain Controller - dc.company.pri (192.168.0.100) Windows 2008 r2

Member of the domain - vc.dc.company.pri (192.168.0.201) Windows 2008 r2 --> Here I am trying to install vCenter

I am using VMware Work-Station 10 evolution version. In my laptop I have got i5 with 16 GB RAM. Everything went smooth till "Select inventory size that best describes your devolopment" but in SSO registration I am struggling.

SSO administrator user name : administrator@vsphere.local

SSO administrator Password - Passw0rd

Lookup Service URL - https://<SSO Machine FQDN Or IP>:7444/lookupservice/sdk

Now if I press next button then I am getting following errors

"SSO registration failed. To remedy this:

- Verify that the certificate file specified in vcsso.properties is valied.

- Varify that the clock in the Single Sign In system and the vCenter Server system are in sync.

- Check the vm_ssoreglog in the system temporary folder for more details on the error.

Search the VMware knowledge base (http://kb.vmware.com) for "Error 29113" for more information"

I have no clue what should I do. Kindly help me regarding this issue.

Thanks a lot in advance !

Abhimanyu

"An error occurred while communicating with the remote host" while migrating

vSPhere ESXi 4.1 U1

While trying to migrate suspended VMs to a new datastore, I very frequently receive the following error:

"An error occurred while communicating with the remote host"

Sometimes it does this 10 minutes in and sometimes it does it after 1+ hours. The remote host keeps chugging along and there are no service interruptions that I can find. How do I debug this? I've searched these forums and the Internet in general without finding much to help myself fix this. I'm currently running on a single-server RAID5 SAN with no failover and am trying ot migrate all my VMs to a dual-node HA RAID10 SAN. SO far things are going great but the larger VMs keep dying during transit. I don't have vMotion so I manually suspend the VM and then migrate it.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure if this is a vmware issue or a problem with my new SAN.

VMs are inaccessible, shared LUN is inactive? What is the problem?

Dear all,

Hi I am working on Vsphere 5.5. My VMs are greyed out and are inaccessible, and my shared datastore is inactive, iscsi target server is up and working, all the paths and targets are visible, unable to find what's the problem. Kindly provide me a solution. Please find the attached screen shots.

Web Client throws Error #2032 when accessed through any sort of reverse proxy / SSL VPN

$

I've been trying to publish the Web Client through our SSL VPN which has a nice workspace to publish web links.

Unfortunately, something in the vSphere web client breaks very badly if you do not connect directly to the application - it loads the background image but instead of displaying the login dialog it simply bombs out with an "Error #2032" message.

Anyone found a fix for this?

Could not start vCenter Server appliance

Hello,

we have been using vCenter server (5.0 and 5.1) on Windows Server 2003 for a long time. Now, with vCenter Server 5.5 there is a need for Windows Server 2008 64-bit and accompanying database requirements. We decided to test vCenter linux appliance, and get rid of Microsoft stuff. So far we've tried vCenter Server 5.1 and 5.5 appliance on 5.0, 5.1 and 5.5 vSphere hypervisor with no luck. The problem is always the same: vpxd is interrupted because of segmentation fault, and this fault occurs in libvmomi.so. I've tried suggested network settings (correct IP, FQDN, and correct forward/backl resolving, etc.) and everything possible to be found on the internet.

The problem arises on fresh start, and running installation wizard:

Failed to execute '/usr/sbin/vpxd_servicecfg 'db' 'write' 'embedded' '' '' '' '' CENSORED':

/usr/sbin/vpxd_commonutils: line 910: 5898 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $VPXD "$@"

/usr/sbin/vpxd_commonutils: line 910: 5907 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $VPXD "$@"

/usr/sbin/vpxd_commonutils: line 910: 6276 Segmentation fault (core dumped) $VPXD "$@"

VC_DB_SCHEMA_VERSION=

VC_DB_SCHEMA_INITIALIZED=1

VC_CFG_RESULT=407(Error: Failed to initialize schema.)

This leads to segmentation fault, and in system log we can find:

vpxd[4422] general protection ip:7f3146a9d5df sp:7fff38f1bd88 error:0 in libvmomi.so

[7f31467b5000+41f000]

This clearly states problem in libvmomi.so, which is segfaulting somewhere. I did strace of vpxd:

And also did GDB and backtrace of vpxd:

So at the end, there is some problem in Vmomi::DynamicData::DynamicData() in libvmomi.so

Is there any resolution for this error in vCenter server appliance ? Any other operating system/appliance/anything runs on host machine for months without a problem. I did hardware checks of server hardware and tried everything I could to diagnose the problem. One thing never works on any host I have: vpxd, it segfaults on libvmomi.so

Thank you for any possible hint.

vCenter Server Appliance update and VMware Tools

I've just updated VCSA to 5.1.0.10000 Build 1065184. I had to uninstall VMware Tools first 'cause update failed with

"VMware Tools cannot install because it appears that another installation of

VMware Tools is already present. Please remove the previous installation and

then attempt to install this copy of VMware Tools again."

error in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/updatecli.log (I had similar problem with previous update).

After update I can see in this log:

"22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Running /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_reconfigure_tools

VMware tools is not installed on this VM.

22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Update status: Done VMware tools reconfiguration"

Should I install VMware Tools via vSphere Web Client again? I supposed VMware Tools to be installed by VCSA update. I can see packages anyway:

AMD vs Intel for ESXi Servers

Have been searching for real world comparisons between AMD and Intel processors in a VMware environment. I am currently running AMD opterons and have a chance to upgrade server hardware and I am considering Intel. I assume Intel would perform better (and from what I have found this is true), but I am curious what everyone's own observations have been if you have run both AMD and Intel.

Any resources that show real world performance comparisons? Which would you go with?

Why does template customization make the NIC disconnected??

$

I've been testing template customization with a Win2k3 Enterprise 'gold' template.

Every time I deploy from this template, the newly created VM does not have its NIC set to connect at power on.

How do I fix this??

It does not seem to matter which kind of NIC -- flexible or enhanced vmxnet.

Having to reset the settings every time sort of ruins the whole idea of templates deployment.

VC 2.5 u4 and ESX 3.5 u3 -- VIC running on Vista...initial testing seemed to work, but today the NICs won't connect...

Thank you, Tom

No Inventory in WebClient (while vSphere Client is fine)

I am a VMWare Newbe.

I installed VMware vCenter Server Appliance 5.5.0b released. (followed the TinkerTry instructions Deploy VMware's vCenter Server Appliance 5.5 in a home lab, without SSO errors - YouTube)

I could not configure a DataCenter over the WebClient, so I switch to vSphereClient.

Now I can't see the DataCenter (and all the inventory) in the WebClient (vSphereClient is fine).

If I try to create a DataCenter over the WebClient I get the message that "datacenter" is already there.

What could be the problem?

vCenter Server Appliance checking for update hangs

Hey all,

I just wanted to update a vCSA appliance. Unfortunately it hangs in the status "Checking for aivailable updates..." as has no internet access.

I changed the settings to CD-ROM updates, mounted the update-repo iso and restarted the appliance, but no luck, it's still in the checking for updates mode.

Anyone has an idea how to stop this process? As the check and install update buttons are disabled during the update search.

Thanks

I deployed a whole new VCSA 5.5 to test its new feature. System joined AD successfully, and I can see and add users into data center using Web client. But if I want to login as AD user, Web Client always tells me "invalid credentials". Setting my AD domain as default domain does not work.

SSH into vcsa and examine SSO log in vmware-sts-idmd.log, it tells me:

Update Manager patch repository

Does anyone know of a way to remove/delete old patches from the patch repository in Update Manager ?

I'm running all ESXi 4.1 and I want to remove all the old ESX 4.0 patches, and other os patches that we do not run to clean up the repository.

Any ideas ? maybe a utility or CLI that might do the trick ?

Thanks in advance.

vCenter Converter 4.2.0 - Unable to contact the specified host.

Hi,

I've searched all over the internet and been working with VMware tech support, but I am unable to find a solution. I am running vSphere 4.1 on Windows 2008 R2 and all is working well, except I am unable to import any physical machine into vCenter. No matter if I use IP, host name, host:port, I always get the error "Unable to contact the specified host..." when trying to install the converter agent remotely.

If I use converter standalone or manually install the agent on the source, the conversion works fine.

Conversions worked fine in 3.5 but now on 4.1, it is broken. I have verified that all the ports are open and I can connect to all shares on the source machine from my vCenter server. UAC is off and the windows firewall is off. Does anybody have any clues on what may be going on?

Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Virtual Machine Snapshot process Locks at 99% and kills all VM connectivity

Good Morning,

I utilise the VEEAM B&R tool to back-up my VMware enviroment, the back-up process nightly largely goes without issue but when backing up certain VM's on various differnet days (there is no pattern) the snapshot process locks at 99% and halts all network connectivity to that VM, i cant even console on to it.

The way i see it is :

1. VEEAM takes a snapshot of the VM.

2. VEEAM backs up the VM.

3. VEEMA removes the snapshot. (This is where it sits at 99% and looses network connectivity).

Now i understand that VEEAM is only an initiator and it only requests that vCenter takes a snapshot, I have spoken to VEEAM and provided them with VEEAM software logs and they can confirm that the issue isnt at their end.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this issue is having an effect on downtime and i've tried pretty much everything i can think of.

Many Thanks,

San.
