vCenter 5.1 Web Client – where is Update Manager?

$

I am running vCenter Server 5.1 build # 947673.  This is a small virtual structure with less than 10 VMs.

The web client software is installed on the same VM as vCenter Server.

I installed Update Manager on the vCenter Server.  When I log into the web client via FireFox as an administrator, I do not see the Update Manager tab under the Monitor Tab.

I have administrator privileges.

The strange thing is, using the traditional vSphere Client to connect to vCenter, I have loaded the Update Manager plugin and downloaded the latest patches.

However, I do not see Update Manager in the 5.1 web client.  Am I missing something?

See attached screen.  Is where the red arrow is shown the area I should see Update Manager tab?

thanks

vCenter Inventory Services

Hi,

I want to install the Inventory Services, but when I enter the password for admin@system-domain, I receive this message:

The user hasn't got enough privileges  to perform administrative actions. Please check VM_ssoreg.log in the temporary foleder for details.

With admin@system-domain account I can enter in web client and there the admin is part of _Adrimistrators_ group (SSO users and Groups).

What's happend with the privileges of admin account, and what can I do to finish the Inventory services installation.

Thanks!

vCenter Server Appliance update and VMware Tools

I've just updated VCSA to 5.1.0.10000 Build 1065184. I had to uninstall VMware Tools first 'cause update failed with

"VMware Tools cannot install because it appears that another installation of

VMware Tools is already present. Please remove the previous installation and

then attempt to install this copy of VMware Tools again."

error in /opt/vmware/var/log/vami/updatecli.log (I had similar problem with previous update).

After update I can see in this log:

"22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Running /opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_reconfigure_tools

VMware tools is not installed on this VM.

22/05/2013 14:43:48 [INFO] Update status: Done VMware tools reconfiguration"

Should I install VMware Tools via vSphere Web Client again? I supposed VMware Tools to be installed by VCSA update. I can see packages anyway:

Web client not working after Simple Install option for vCenter Server 5.5

I'm trying to get into the web client after a fresh install of vCenter Server 5.5. When I go to the url of http://vcenterservername/ it brings me to the page to log into vSphere Web Client. When I click on the link, it takes me to a page that says "In order for this direct link to work, you must first log in to the vSphere Web Client at least once from http://{webclient-host}:{webclient-https-port}. That sounds simple enough, however when I go to that, I get a cert warning. I click "continue to this website", and I get an HTTP Status 404- page that says "The requested resource is not available." I have found several articles that state try going to http://vcenterservername:default port/vsphere-client which that doesn't work either. I am trying this from the local vCenter server itself. Any suggestions?

AMD vs Intel for ESXi Servers

Have been searching for real world comparisons between AMD and Intel processors in a VMware environment.  I am currently running AMD opterons and have a chance to upgrade server hardware and I am considering Intel.   I assume Intel would perform better (and from what I have found this is true), but I am curious what everyone's own observations have been if you have run both AMD and Intel.

Any resources that show real world performance comparisons?  Which would you go with?

Host Profiles playing up in vSphere 5

$

Hi all,

Ive recently upgraded about 200 hosts to ESXi 5 from ESX 4.1 and 2 vcenters 5 also.

Ive noticed a problem with host profiles when it comes to storage, and wanted to see if anyone else has come across it.

Basically its only happening on the HP BL620 G7 but the older HP BL680 G5's are unaffected.

When creating a profile from an existing host, That host it is created off obviously is compliant, but all the rest come back with saying that the local disk naa that was in the host it was created from is missing.. this only happens on the G7's might have something to do with a newer controller in the hosts?

Ok thats ok i edited the profile and removed that naa from the check but then the hosts are coming back with

Host state doesnt match specification: device (naa of local storage for that host) needs to be reset

Host state doesnt match specification: device (naa of local storage for that host) Path Selection Policy needs to be set to default for claiming SATP

Looking at the profile the default for VMW_SATP_LOCAL is fixed which is what the disk is set at.

Any one seen this? I have removed something from the check but seams to make things worse, I dont mind at the moment because I know the hosts are compliant I would like a big green tick instead of a big red cross

Cheers

Web Client throws Error #2032 when accessed through any sort of reverse proxy / SSL VPN

I've been trying to publish the Web Client through our SSL VPN which has a nice workspace to publish web links.

Unfortunately, something in the vSphere web client breaks very badly if you do not connect directly to the application - it loads the background image but instead of displaying the login dialog it simply bombs out with an "Error #2032" message.

Anyone found a fix for this?

I seem to successfully join my vcenter 5.5 server to my domain but for some reason I am not successful in adding domain users to the vcenter server.  i'm attaching a screen shot where I try to add users but it doesn't seem to see my domain in the list?  maybe i'm looking in the wrong place?  tips/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!

Vcenter (VCSA) update failed

Hello,

i'm running the VCSA since a couple of months and tried to update it to 5.0 Update 1a (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2031331). After 14 hours the Update was running, middle in database-upgrade, nothing happened anymore, that's why i've rebooted the Vcenter appliance. It never came up again

Well, then i've made a restore through Veeam and finally the Vcenter appliance is running again, with the old 5.0.03324 Build 472350.

Now i would to try to Update the Appliance to 5.0.0.5239 Build 759855 again, but the Update failed before it really starts

What can i do?

vSphere 5.5 and Windows vSphere Client

$

I recently did a fresh install of vCenter 5.5, and then upgraded my hosts to 5.5 from 5.0 and moved them into the new vCenter. I have noticed a slight problem with vCenter. I can log into it without any issues using the web client. It logs in the first time I try every time. However, when I try to log into the same vCenter server with the Windows "fat" client, it has problems logging in, and I have to try several (5-10 times or more) before it will finally log in. It gives the following error:

"The vSphere Client could not connect to "<vCenter>". The server '<vCenter>' took too long to respond. (The command has timed out as the remote server is taking too long to respond.)"

I am not sure why the web client logs in without a problem while the Windows client is very hit-and-miss with getting in. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

vSphere Web Client on OSX no mouse pointer issue

$

I have upgraded vCenter server to 5.5.0a which makes available client integration tools for OSX, which means that virtual consoles through vSphere web client are supposed to be supported on Mac.  In general the web client works very well, except that if I open a virtual console on a VM which does not have vmware tools installed, such as a fresh install, there is no mouse pointer.  After vmware tools installs and the server reboots (on a Windows Server) the mouse pointer becomes available.  Unfortunately it's often the reason I would go to the console that I need to install vmware tools or vmware tools quit working, which makes this a very annoying bug.  Anyone aware of a workaround?

My environment right now has only ESXi 5.1 hosts, with vCenter 5.5.  This occurs in both Firefox and Chrome on 10.8 and 10.9.

Cant connect to https://vcenter/sdk/vimService

Trying to run Dell's dpack by connecting to our vcenter server.

I add our vcenter URL and after trying to connect I receive:

"Failed to connect with the VMware VCenter Server 'https://vcenter/sdk/vimService' "

Turned off windows firewall, checked the SDK URL (VirtualCenter.VimApiUrl) in vcenter settings.  Not sure what else to check.

Ideas? thanks

Virtual Machine Snapshot process Locks at 99% and kills all VM connectivity

$

Good Morning,

I utilise the VEEAM B&R tool to back-up my VMware enviroment, the back-up process nightly largely goes without issue but when backing up certain VM's on various differnet days (there is no pattern) the snapshot process locks at 99% and halts all network connectivity to that VM, i cant even console on to it.

The way i see it is :

1. VEEAM takes a snapshot of the VM.

2. VEEAM backs up the VM.

3. VEEMA removes the snapshot. (This is where it sits at 99% and looses network connectivity).

Now i understand that VEEAM is only an initiator and it only requests that vCenter takes a snapshot, I have spoken to VEEAM and provided them with VEEAM software logs and they can confirm that the issue isnt at their end.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this issue is having an effect on downtime and i've tried pretty much everything i can think of.

Many Thanks,

San.

Hi,

I have updated the vCenter 5.5 to the latest version that is available yesterday. It is linux appliance.

I was having problem to get in to web client after the update. I performed the "Regenerate SSL certificates" option thats located under Admin tab. Then the issue is resolved and I am able to get in to web client.

Now, I am seeing the different issue.

Unable to retreive health data from http://localhost/sps/health.xml

Unable to retreive health data from http://localhost/sms/health.xml

These 2 services are running but not able to load it. Also, I am seeing the following exceptions in the log.

Dear VMware Community!

I don't have any web interface after install. Could you help me to solve this issue?

I installed successfully VMware-ESXi-5.5.0, and then downloaded and deployed VMware-vCenter-Server-Appliance-5.5.0.5101-1398493.

This is nmap scan results of vCenter Server Appliance:
Starting Nmap 6.40 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2013-11-18 10:47 Środkowoeuropejski czas stand.
Host is up (0.00s latency).
Not shown: 96 closed ports
PORT     STATE    SERVICE
22/tcp   open     ssh
135/tcp  filtered msrpc
8009/tcp filtered ajp13
8080/tcp filtered http-proxy
MAC Address: 00:0C:29:A1:86:C9 (VMware)
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.86 seconds

I hope that some of you faced with this problem, because I can't find a solution!:-)

In attached file you can find screenshot form console.

Cheers!

By the way, from default virtual machine hardware version is 7, I upgraded it to 10 but without any change.

vCenter Server Appliance (SLES) out of disk space, service cannot start

Hi everyone

We had a scheduled maintenance window over the weekend while some work was carried out elsewhere in the building. As a precaution we shutdown the infrastructure that we we still keep onsite (the rest is in colo). So all we have is a 2 node ESXi cluster, managed by vCenter Server Appliance (Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 64bit). It only has 6 VMs running on it as most of them have been migrated offsite.

This morning we started up the OpenFiler NFS storage box and the ESXi nodes. All VMs started ok, including the vCenter Server Appliance.

However I was unable to connect to the vCenter Appliance using vSphere Client. I could connect to the ESXi nodes directly without problems. DNS hostnames all resolve to the IP addresses without problems.

Looking at the vSphere Client logs I see the following message each time I tried to connect:

System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 10.10.0.205:443

So I connected to the vCenter Appliance over SSH and it looks like it's run out of disk space. Here's the df and mount output:

vlevcenter01:/ # df -h

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda3             9.8G  9.8G     0 100% /

devtmpfs              4.0G  104K  4.0G   1% /dev

tmpfs                 4.0G  4.0K  4.0G   1% /dev/shm

/dev/sda1             130M   18M  105M  15% /boot

/dev/sdb1              20G  3.8G   15G  21% /storage/core

/dev/sdb2              20G  717M   18G   4% /storage/log

/dev/sdb3              20G   19G     0 100% /storage/db

vlevcenter01:/ # mount -l

/dev/sda3 on / type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)

proc on /proc type proc (rw)

sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)

debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)

devtmpfs on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755)

tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,mode=1777)

devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620,gid=5)

/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)

/dev/sdb1 on /storage/core type ext3 (rw)

/dev/sdb2 on /storage/log type ext3 (rw)

/dev/sdb3 on /storage/db type ext3 (rw)

So the database and root partitions have run out of space. Looking in /var/log/localmesages:

Jul 15 10:10:51 vlevcenter01 startproc: startproc: Empty pid file /var/run/slapd/slapd.pid for /usr/lib/openldap/slapd
Jul 15 10:10:51 vlevcenter01 startproc: startproc:  exit status of parent of /usr/lib/openldap/slapd: 1
Jul 15 10:10:52 vlevcenter01 checkproc: checkproc: Empty pid file /var/run/slapd/slapd.pid for /usr/lib/openldap/slapd
It looks like it can't create the pid files for the services because there is no disk space.

We already have 60GB of vmdks allocated to this VM though we do have space on our datastore to add more. But I'm concerned that the vCenter Appliance will just grow and grow.

1) Is there any scheduled maintenance that runs on the vCenter Appliance to keep disk usage under control? This is what I would expect from an enterprise product, I'm very surprised to see such a problem happen.

2) Where should I start looking to clear some disk space so we can get the vCenter service back up and running?

I'd like to find a longer term solution to this otherwise we might have to just keep adding vmdks until our datastore runs out of space.

Cheers, B

Migrate physical vCenter 5.0 to Virtual (VM) Vcenter 5.5

Hello friends , i wanted to move/migrate the vCenter 5.0 which is installed on physical box to a virtual with vCenter 5.5 as my SQL DB is also on remote server which also needs to be migrated so i can do like backup and restore to a new sql erver and then create a new 64 bit DNS connection and then connect..

So i just wanted to know is there any challenges to migrate the vCenter 5.0 to a new VM with 5.5. DB.Can i use the below steps to achieve this .

1. Build a new VM with the same name and IP address without connecting to network.

2. Stop the existing vCenter server 5.0 and shutdown the same . Bring up the new VM and installed all windows update.

3.Start installing the vCenter server 5.5 install all components SSO, inventory service, web client etc etc..once it will ask to reconnect the database.at that time i can give a new server location with 64 bit DSN connection.

4.Import the SSL certificates to the same location.

5. Create the Roles and permission.

So apart from above is any thing else i need to check or any issue ??

See i know i have an option for P2V , but as i was reading somewhere that i need to disconnect he ESXi host and need to restart the Management server on that particular host which i can not do as my all the esxi host are running with business critical servers and can not loose any connection for those machines, so any better idea.

Thanks

When I click this Storage View<tab> from within vSphere client, I get this error all the time....anyone know a fix for this?

The server 'my.host.name' could not interpret the client's request. (The remote server returned an error: (503) Server Unavailable
